Strava is worth considering if you want to record activities, review training, connect a watch or fitness app, and share progress with a community. Its recording-and-review workflow gives it an approachable feel, though that is not a claim based on a formal usability test. Many basic features are available without a subscription; route tools, segment leaderboards, advanced analysis, and some safety options are subscription features, so check current plan details before paying.
1. It brings activity records and training analysis together
Strava’s activity tools cover more than a list of completed workouts. Its Help Center describes activity analysis and stats, goals, Best Efforts, training zones, and a training log. That gives you one place to revisit your recorded activity and look for changes over time, instead of treating each workout as an isolated entry. The exact analysis tools available can depend on subscription status and the app or device you use. Strava Help Center
2. The social features can add a community dimension
Strava includes athlete feeds, clubs, challenges, kudos, and comments. Those features let users share activity and respond to others, making the service more community-oriented than a private workout log. Whether that social layer motivates you is personal: it can be useful if you like encouragement and shared goals, or easy to ignore if you prefer to track privately. Strava Help Center
3. You can connect devices and apps you already use
You do not necessarily have to record every activity with your phone. Strava’s Help Center lists connected devices and apps, including Garmin and Apple Watch. That can make Strava a useful place to review activities captured elsewhere, but compatibility is specific to the device and setup. Check Strava’s current device guidance for the exact model and connection method before relying on a sync. Strava’s connected device and app guidance

4. Routes and segments can make exploration and comparison more useful
Strava lists route tools and segment leaderboards among its subscription features. Routes can help with planning, while segments let athletes compare efforts on particular stretches. These are not universal free features: access depends on the current plan and may vary by app or compatible device. In a May 21, 2025 announcement, Strava described an updated Routes experience with AI-powered suggestions informed by its Global Heatmap. That announcement is a dated description, not a guarantee that every route feature is available to every user today; confirm current availability in your account and region. 5. Safety options and privacy settings provide useful controls
Strava’s subscription guide lists safety features and says Beacon is available free in the Strava app; subscribers can also use it on compatible devices. Beacon can share your location with selected safety contacts, but it is not an emergency service. Set it up deliberately and understand who can see your location before an activity.

What is free, and what requires a subscription?
“Free” and “subscription-only” are both too broad as descriptions of Strava. The official feature guide places segment leaderboards, advanced training analysis, route tools, and safety features among subscription offerings, while Beacon is available free through the app. Eligibility can depend on device compatibility, and plan details may change. Strava does not establish a price here, so check the current offer for your region before subscribing. Strava subscription feature guide
