For backyard and patio sports, the best projector depends first on how dark the viewing area gets, then on screen size and placement. These five BenQ models are candidates for different setups—not independently tested winners. BenQ presents its sports projectors for living-room use, so using them outside calls for darkness, shelter, and a suitable power setup. The GS50 is marketed for outdoor use, but its listed 500-lumen brightness makes it a different trade-off.
What matters most when watching sports outside
Ambient light and screen size
Ambient light is the first constraint: porch and street lights compete with the projected image, and a larger screen makes brightness more consequential. ProjectorCentral describes ambient light as the enemy of outdoor screening and recommends leaning toward higher brightness when nearby lights cannot be controlled. Its 2026 guide gives roughly 1,500 to 3,500 ANSI lumens as a general range for traditional home-theater projectors; this is not a measurement of the models below. ProjectorCentral also notes that the brightest picture mode can sacrifice color accuracy, while the most accurate modes may produce about half to two-thirds of rated brightness. Sports motion, resolution, and placement
Motion features can matter when following fast play. BenQ lists MEMC and Sports Mode on several 4K candidates below, and Sports Mode on the 1080p TH575i. Resolution is not the only trade-off: ProjectorCentral says 1080p can be sensible if it allows more brightness for the budget. Check the throw distance as well as the image size you want; a short-throw projector can fit where there is little space between the projector and screen.
Screen, streaming, and protection
A portable screen can provide a more predictable image surface than a wall or sheet. ProjectorCentral recommends considering how easily it sets up and comes down, and whether it can be anchored against wind. For streaming, check app availability in your region and whether the services you use carry the games you want. BenQ notes that app availability can vary; an HDMI-connected device is another way to access authorized sports services. None of the four sports-page models below is shown with an outdoor weather rating on that page. Keep equipment sheltered and bring it indoors after use unless its current manufacturer instructions explicitly permit the exposure.

Five projector candidates for outdoor sports
This is a use-case shortlist based on manufacturer specifications, not a hands-on ranking. BenQ presents the first four as sports projectors for home use, so outdoor viewing is conditional on dark conditions, weather protection, and a workable power arrangement. Specifications below come from BenQ’s sports projector page and outdoor projector page.

How to choose for your patio
Choose the TH575i if brightness is the priority
BenQ lists 3,800 lumens for the 1080p TH575i, the highest figure among the four models on its sports page in this shortlist. That makes it the most plausible choice here when some nearby light is unavoidable, but it does not establish daytime suitability or measured real-world performance. Plan to watch after dark, and protect the projector from moisture.

Choose the TK705i or TK705STi for 4K and motion features
Both models are listed at 3,000 lumens with 4K, MEMC, Sports Mode, and Google TV. The TK705STi is the more relevant one if placement distance is tight: BenQ specifies a 100-inch image from 1.8 meters. Confirm that your actual screen size and throw geometry work before settling on a location.

The GP520 combines 4K, MEMC, Sports Mode, and Google TV, with a 2,600-lumen specification. Its listed brightness is lower than the TH575i and the two TK705 models above, so it is a better fit for a dark or controlled-light setup than a patio with persistent lighting.

Choose the GS50 for portability and limited protection—not a large, bright image
BenQ’s outdoor page lists the GS50 at 500 lumens, with built-in Android TV, an IPX2 rating, and drop protection up to 2.3 feet (70 cm). Those specifications make it the portability-oriented candidate here, but the listed brightness is modest for a large sports image. IPX2 and drop protection should not be interpreted as all-weather permission or approval to leave the projector outdoors.
Set up for a clearer game
- Plan around darkness. Schedule viewing at night or as close to dark as practical. The cited sources do not support a promise of clear daytime sports viewing from any model here.
- Reduce nearby lights. Switch off controllable porch or garden lights. If fixed street or porch lighting remains, favor a higher-brightness candidate while remembering that brighter picture modes may reduce color accuracy.
- Measure the throw. Decide on screen size and projector position before setup. For the TK705STi, BenQ’s 100-inch-at-1.8-meter example is a starting point, not a substitute for checking the complete manual and your installation geometry.
- Use a suitable screen. For a temporary setup, look for a portable screen that is easy to erect and take down and can be anchored against wind.
- Check the viewing and streaming chain. Confirm that your chosen streaming apps are available in your region and support the sports service you subscribe to. If needed, use an HDMI-connected device with authorized channels.
- Keep the equipment protected. Use shelter, a safe power arrangement, and bring the projector inside after the game unless the manufacturer’s current instructions explicitly allow the exposure.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
The lumens, resolutions, and feature names above are manufacturer-listed specifications, not comparative test results. The cited sources do not establish daylight performance, measured brightness in each picture mode, or an independently verified ranking among these models. Prices, stock, and exact model variants can also change; check the manufacturer’s current regional product information before buying.
