There is no single objectively best-sounding mechanical keyboard: switch choice, typing force, keycaps, desk surface, and recording conditions all change what you hear. These five models stand out for different reasons, from sound-focused construction to reviewer-praised typing feel. The order is an editorial guide to fit, not a controlled sound ranking; the available sources do not provide comparable acoustic measurements.
How to choose a mechanical keyboard by sound
Start with the sound profile and feel you want, then check layout and intended use. “Thocky” is informal vocabulary for a lower, fuller-sounding keystroke, not a standardized acoustic category. A mechanical keyboard can be made quieter, but it should not be assumed silent.
- Switches: Linear, tactile, and clicky switches differ in sound and feel; silent switch types are also available. The switch is only one part of the sound.
- Construction: Plates, gaskets, stabilizers, and case damping can affect resonance and impact. Manufacturer descriptions explain design intent, not independent comparative test results.
- Sound demonstrations: Treat clips as illustrations, not a mechanical keyboard sound test under controlled conditions. Microphones, typing force, and recording setups vary.
The picks below combine manufacturer construction details with attributed editorial recommendations or review impressions. None has been established here as the universal best sounding mechanical keyboard.

1. Razer BlackWidow V4 75%: best fit for sound-focused customization
Razer describes the BlackWidow V4 75% as a gasket-mounted board with an FR4 plate, tape-enhanced PCB, lubricated stabilizers, and two layers of sound-dampening foam. Razer provides sound clips for the stock board and switch choices, and says, “All typing test sound clips are recorded on a stock Razer BlackWidow V4 75% with no modifications.” These are manufacturer demonstrations, not independent measurements or a comparison against the other keyboards in this guide. 2. Wooting 80HE: best fit for gaming with sound and feel tuning
The 80HE is a gaming-oriented board with magnetic switches, rather than traditional mechanical switches. RTINGS selects it as its best gaming mechanical keyboard, a use-case recommendation distinct from an acoustic verdict. Wooting says the board uses a silicone gasket mount, PC switch plate, and screw-in stabilizers. Its product page explains that the gasket absorbs impact for less noise and a softer typing feel. 3. Wooting 60HE v2: best fit for a compact desk and adjustable damping
PC Gamer’s reviewer chose the silicone option for a more muted sound profile and gave the board a favorable subjective assessment for sound and typing feel. The 60% layout saves desk space, but it omits dedicated navigation keys such as Delete, so consider how often you use those keys before choosing a compact board. Keychron lists 3 mm acoustic foam, 2.5 mm EPDM foam, and PET film, and says these materials reduce keystroke vibrations and acoustic resonance. 5. Keychron Q1 HE 8K: best fit for typing feel with a high polling rate
GamesRadar describes the Q1 HE 8K’s gasket design and silicone pads as producing muted, clean, and bouncy keypresses. That is a reviewer’s impression, not a standardized sound measurement. GamesRadar also notes that the 8,000 Hz polling rate is mainly useful to highly competitive players; most casual players may not benefit. These five boards offer distinct reasons to consider them, but the sources do not compare their sound using a shared test method. No reliable decibel or “thock” score ranking can be derived from the available evidence. RTINGS says it has tested over 295 keyboards on its 2026 recommendations page; that is RTINGS’ published keyboard-testing count, not a count of sound tests or a direct comparison of these five models.

For a sound decision, compare demonstrations only when the switch, keycaps, recording setup, and typing conditions are known to be similar. Where those details differ or are not stated, use clips to get a general impression rather than treating them as a head-to-head test.
