Five Makita tools have review-reported trade-offs worth weighing before you buy: the DT03 12V impact driver, an 18V LXT brushless blower, an 18V X2 LXT 18-inch mower, an 18V LXT Mossy Oak heated jacket, and an 18V LXT oscillating multi-tool. The concerns vary by job—from limited runtime to accessory compatibility—and do not mean these products are poor choices for every buyer. SlashGear’s Samantha Catalano framed the roundup as a way to flag disadvantages against alternatives, not to discourage every purchase. Its article was updated September 11, 2026, and relays product-specific findings from Pro Tool Reviews; those tests are not a single standardized comparison across all five categories.
How to interpret the review findings
The figures below are Pro Tool Reviews’ reported measurements and scores as summarized by SlashGear, rather than independent tests conducted for this article. A reviewer’s result reflects a particular method and use case; it should not be treated as a guarantee of how a tool will perform in every job. The roundup also reports strengths for several products, so the useful question is whether each limitation matters for your work.
Makita DT03 12V CXT impact driver
Why reconsider it
The DT03 dates to 2015. Although its stated maximum torque is up to 970 inch-pounds, Pro Tool Reviews measured 307 inch-pounds in its torque test, as summarized by SlashGear. That measured result is not interchangeable with the manufacturer’s maximum-torque specification: the review’s test method and conditions matter.

The tool received an overall score of 6.2. The review also cautioned that its test does not replace manufacturer testing.
#1 Best Overall
- 1/2" Driver-Drill with 2-speeds (0-600 and 0-1,900 RPM) delivers up to 480 in. Lbs. Of Max Torque
- 1/2" Driver-Drill features a compact design at only 7-1/4" long and weighs only 3.3 lbs. With battery for reduced operator fatigue
- Impact Driver with variable speed (0-2,900 RPM and 0-3,500 IPM) delivers up to 1,460 in. Lbs. Of Max Torque
- Impact Driver features a compact design at only 5-3/8" long and weighs only 2.8 lbs. With battery for reduced operator fatigue
- Ergonomically designed handles with rubberized soft grips provide increased comfort
Who should weigh that trade-off
If you need an impact driver for demanding fastening or prioritize speed under load, those reported results are a reason to compare alternatives and confirm that the DT03 meets your needs. They do not establish that every DT03 will deliver the same result in every material or application.
Makita 18V LXT brushless cordless blower
Why reconsider it
SlashGear reports ratings of up to 459 CFM and 116 mph, along with praise from Pro Tool Reviews for cruise control, relative quietness, and lighter weight than other cordless blowers. The reviewer called it the strongest 18V blower that publication had tested at the time of its 2021 review. Its main drawback in that review was runtime: about 10 minutes on high with a fully charged 5.0 Ah battery. SlashGear estimates about eight minutes with a 4.0 Ah battery.
The blower scored 8.1 overall, so the runtime concern sits alongside positive findings rather than replacing them.
Rank #2
- Mechanical 2-speed transmission (0-500 and 0-1,900 RPM) for a wide range of drilling and fastening applications
- BL Brushless motor delivers 440 in.lbs. of Max Torque
- Efficient BL Brushless Motor is electronically controlled to optimize battery energy use for up to 50% longer run time per charge
- Makita XFD131 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1/2" Driver-Drill Kit (3.0Ah)
Who should weigh that trade-off
For brief cleanup tasks, the combination of low weight and the reported performance may suit you. For a larger property or extended high-speed clearing, plan around the tested 10-minute runtime on a 5.0 Ah battery and whether carrying or swapping additional batteries is acceptable.
Makita 18V X2 LXT 18-inch lawn mower
Why reconsider it
In a comparison that included 24 other mowers, Pro Tool Reviews reported that this Makita cut more area with two 5.0 Ah batteries than other push mowers in the cited test and produced lower noise. It nevertheless struggled against models with 20- to 21-inch decks. The narrower 18-inch deck can mean more passes over a given lawn, making deck width a practical consideration even when battery performance is favorable.
SlashGear also reports no side- or rear-discharge option. In the described test, mowing with the rear flap down and mulch plug removed left clumps when turning. The roundup characterizes the mower as well-built and a better fit for smaller yards.
Rank #3
- Variable 2-speed design (0-450 & 0-1, 700 RPM) covers a wide range of drilling and driving applications
- Makita-built motor delivers 250 in. Lbs. Of max torque
- Ergonomically designed handle with rubberized soft grip provides increased comfort
- 12V max CXT slide battery design enables the tool to stand on its own for user convenience
- Compact and ergonomic design at only 7" Long
Who should weigh that trade-off
Consider your lawn’s size and whether you need to discharge clippings rather than mulch or collect them. The review’s positive area and noise findings do not erase the narrower deck’s disadvantage against larger-deck competitors or the reported clumping behavior in that particular setup.

Why reconsider it
The jacket has three heat zones—two on the chest and one on the back—plus three settings and removable sleeves so it can be worn as a vest. Pro Tool Reviews’ reported heat-coverage rating was 6/10 and its maximum-temperature rating was 7.5; the overall score was 7.8.
SlashGear reports runtimes of about three hours on high and 17 hours on low with a 3.0 Ah battery. The low setting was described as providing limited warmth in cold conditions. Fit also affects how useful the heating feels: wearing the jacket over a base layer may improve the experience, while sizing down can leave too little room for layering or sleeves that are too short.
Rank #4
- Brushless Motor delivers 530 in.lbs. of Max Torque
- Efficient Brushless motor is electronically controlled to optimize battery energy use for up to 50% longer run time per charge
- The Brushless motor eliminates carbon brushes, enabling the BL motor to run cooler and more efficiently for longer life
- The electronically-controlled Brushless motor efficiently uses energy to match torque and RPM to the changing demands of the application
- Variable 2-speed design (0-500 & 0-2,000 RPM) (0-7,500 & 0-30,000 BPM) covers a wide range of drilling, driving and hammer applications
Who should weigh that trade-off
Choose with both warmth and fit in mind. If you expect to use high heat for long stretches, the reported runtime may require battery changes. If you intend to layer, check the fit with those layers rather than sizing down automatically.

Why reconsider it
The roundup lists a variable-speed range of 6,000–20,000 OPM and a 3.2-degree oscillating angle. Pro Tool Reviews gave it an overall score of 8.2, citing vibration control and cutting speed as strengths while noting a brushed motor, noise while cutting, heavier weight, and price as drawbacks.
Accessory fit is a specific limitation: SlashGear says this model accepts Starlock accessories but not StarlockPlus or StarlockMax attachments. The roundup contrasts it with Makita’s 18V StarlockMax oscillating multi-tool, which it says accepts all Starlock accessories and received a 9.4 from Pro Tool Reviews. Confirm the exact model and attachment standard before buying blades or other accessories; do not assume tools in the same product line share compatibility.
Who should weigh that trade-off
If you already own StarlockPlus or StarlockMax accessories, compatibility may be decisive. If vibration control and cutting speed matter more and your accessories match, the reported review strengths may outweigh the motor, noise, and weight drawbacks.
What matters most before choosing
- Impact driver: Separate the DT03’s stated maximum torque from the reviewer’s measured result and consider the specific loaded test.
- Blower: Match the runtime reported with a 5.0 Ah battery to the size and duration of your cleanup jobs.
- Mower: Compare the 18-inch deck with the larger decks in the cited test, and decide whether its discharge and mulching behavior fits your yard.
- Heated jacket: Balance high-heat runtime, low-setting warmth, and the room needed for comfortable layering.
- Oscillating multi-tool: Check the exact Starlock compatibility and weigh cutting performance against motor type, noise, and weight.
