Whether a Linux distro is worth paying for depends on what the payment gets you. Zorin OS Pro sells extra desktop features, elementary OS invites voluntary project support, Ubuntu Pro adds security maintenance, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation bundles a professional subscription and support. If you do not need those extras, Pop!_OS is a capable free option.
What does paying for a Linux distro actually buy?
These options do not all charge for the same thing. A one-time purchase for desktop extras is different from a voluntary contribution or an annual subscription priced per machine. Compare the payment model, intended user, support scope, and maintenance promise—not just the number next to the price.
| Option | What payment buys | Best fit | Price and billing unit | Maintenance or support information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zorin OS Pro | Additional features, apps, and support beyond the free Core edition | Home desktop users seeking a paid consumer edition | Current price not stated on the retrieved official product page; check checkout for the live price and availability | Zorin OS 18 receives updates and security patches until at least June 2029, according to Zorin Group |
| elementary OS | Voluntary support for the project through a pay-what-you-can purchase | Users who want elementary OS and wish to fund its development | Pay what you want; no required license fee stated | Community support and guides are available; payment and download help is also offered |
| Ubuntu Pro | Expanded security maintenance and management capabilities for Ubuntu | Personal users who want added coverage or organizations managing systems | Personal tier: no cost for up to five machines. Enterprise Workstation Pro: US$25 per machine per year on Canonical’s pricing page, accessed in 2026 | Enterprise support tiers are separate; the pricing page does not make Ubuntu Pro a paid desktop edition |
| Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation | One-year workstation subscription, with a choice of self-support or standard support | Professional workstation users, including graphics, animation, and scientific workloads | U.S. store listing starts at US$196.90 per year for self-support or US$328.90 per year for standard support | Each listed subscription includes one physical workstation and one guest VM entitlement |
| Pop!_OS | No OS license purchase; System76 says it is free to download and use | Users who want a Linux desktop without paying for an OS | Free | System76 develops it in-house; the cited product page does not state a maintenance horizon |
Prices and availability can change by date and region. Ubuntu Pro and Red Hat prices above are specific to the U.S. listings described, and their annual per-machine or per-year subscriptions are not directly comparable to voluntary or consumer-edition payments.

Zorin OS Pro is the clearest fit if you specifically want a paid, consumer-facing Linux edition. Zorin says its free Core edition remains available, while Pro adds features, apps, and support. That makes the decision a choice about the included extras, not a requirement to buy Linux in order to use Zorin.

Zorin Group states that Zorin OS 18 will receive updates and security patches until at least June 2029. That published maintenance horizon can help with planning, but it does not by itself establish that Pro is a better value than other desktops. The retrieved official product page did not expose a current price, so check the live purchase page before deciding. Zorin Group’s Zorin OS page
Is elementary OS free?
elementary OS uses a pay-what-you-can purchase flow. The project says users fund its work by choosing what to pay for elementary OS and AppCenter apps; this is voluntary project support, not a required license fee. You can therefore distinguish the act of supporting the project from a mandatory charge to use the operating system.

The official page describes elementary OS 8.1.1, named Circe, and says version 8.1 improves Secure Session, Dock, accessibility, and device support. It also reports that more than 1,100 issue reports were fixed for 8.1. That count is a project-reported number, not a comparative quality or performance score. elementary OS official site

Do you need to pay for Ubuntu?
No. Ubuntu Pro adds security maintenance and management capabilities to Ubuntu; it is not a separate paid Ubuntu desktop edition. Canonical lists a no-cost Personal tier for up to five machines, so an individual within that limit does not have to subscribe to use Ubuntu Pro’s personal tier.
For organizations, Canonical lists Enterprise Workstation Pro at US$25 per machine per year on its pricing page accessed in 2026. Enterprise support tiers are priced separately, so do not assume that this per-machine Pro price includes every support service. Check Canonical’s current terms and regional availability before purchasing. Canonical Ubuntu Pro pricing and Canonical Ubuntu Pro information

Which Linux distro has paid support for a professional workstation?
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation is aimed at advanced users on powerful hardware, including people doing graphics, animation, and scientific work. It is a professional subscription, not simply a consumer desktop edition with a donation attached. That distinction matters if you are evaluating it for a business or a specialist workstation rather than a general home PC.
Red Hat’s U.S. store listing starts at US$196.90 for one year of self-support and US$328.90 for one year of standard support. Each listed subscription includes one physical workstation and one guest VM entitlement. These are listed starting prices, not a universal quote; verify current store terms for your location and requirements. Red Hat store listing and Red Hat Workstation product information

When is a free distro the better choice?
If you need a desktop operating system rather than a particular paid support arrangement or set of extras, a free distro can be the sensible choice. System76 says Pop!_OS is free to download and use and is developed in-house. It shows that buying an OS license is not a prerequisite for choosing a Linux desktop. System76 Pop!_OS page
Quick Recap
- Choose a free option when your main requirement is a usable desktop and you do not need a paid edition’s extra features or a vendor subscription.
- Consider voluntary payment when you want to support a project but do not want a required license charge.
- Consider a maintenance subscription when you need defined security or management coverage across systems.
- Consider a workstation subscription when professional support and a specified workstation-and-VM entitlement fit your deployment.
How to decide which payment model fits
- Write down what you need: desktop apps and features, project support, security maintenance, or professional support.
- Check whether the charge is voluntary, one-time, or recurring and whether it is billed per machine.
- Confirm exactly what support or entitlement is included; do not treat a security-maintenance tier as equivalent to a support contract.
- Check the stated maintenance horizon and whether it applies to the release you plan to install.
- Verify the live price, region, and terms on the provider’s page before paying, especially for annual subscriptions.
