The most useful emergency-kit gadgets are a flashlight with spare batteries, a weather radio, a portable phone charger, a first-aid kit, and a multipurpose tool. They can help with light, information, communication, and basic care during an outage or evacuation—but they are only part of a complete household kit.
1. Flashlight and spare batteries
A flashlight gives you portable light during a power outage or while moving through an unfamiliar area. The American Red Cross and NOAA both include flashlights in their emergency-supply guidance. Keep compatible spare batteries with the light so they are ready when needed.
Choose a power source and battery type that suit your household, and check the batteries periodically. Neither organization specifies a required brightness, runtime, or durability standard, so those details depend on your circumstances rather than an official minimum. A radio can provide emergency information if your usual ways of receiving updates are unavailable. The Red Cross recommends a battery-powered or hand-crank radio and says a NOAA Weather Radio is preferable if possible; NOAA also recommends a battery-powered radio.

Build the rest of the kit around your household
Gadgets do not replace basic supplies. The Red Cross recommends storing supplies in an easy-to-carry kit that can be used at home or during an evacuation. Its guidance calls for one gallon of water per person per day, with a three-day supply for evacuation and a two-week supply at home. It gives the same three-day evacuation and two-week home durations for food.
NOAA advises keeping at least three days of non-perishable food, water, and medicine for each household member, noting that power and water could be out for at least that long. It says a longer-than-three-day water supply is desirable when possible. Tailor supplies to your household, including the needs of children, pets, and anyone who relies on medical devices. Red Cross kit recommendations; NOAA preparedness guidance.
Keep the kit usable
- Store the supplies where household members can find them, and keep the kit easy to carry if evacuation is possible.
- Check that the flashlight has compatible spare batteries and that rechargeable devices are ready to use.
- Confirm that radio alerts and charger connections suit your devices and local needs.
- Review food, water, medication, and personal supplies as household needs change.
The Red Cross reported that 11 million people were displaced in the United States in 2024, citing the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre; it described the figure as a U.S. record and roughly one-quarter of worldwide disaster-related displacements. In its August 18, 2025 release, Red Cross vice president of Disaster Programs Jennifer Pipa said, “Unfortunately, disasters don’t wait for the right time.” American Red Cross, August 18, 2025.
