For routine GRUB menu changes on Linux, start by checking whether GRUB Customizer or Soplos GRUB Editor supports your distribution. If you need to configure GRUB from Windows, consider Grub2Win. If the computer already has a boot problem, Boot-Repair and MX Boot Repair are recovery utilities—not general-purpose menu editors.
These tools have different operating-system and distribution scopes, and a graphical interface does not make boot configuration risk-free. Check the project and distribution guidance for your exact setup before applying changes.

What these GRUB tools do
GNU GRUB is a boot loader: it helps start an operating system and can display a menu during startup. A GRUB configuration application is separate from that boot menu; it changes or repairs the configuration that determines how the menu and boot process behave. The GNU Project describes GRUB as “a Multiboot boot loader” in its project overview.
The five tools below serve three distinct purposes: editing menu settings from a Linux desktop, configuring from Windows, and recovering boot access. Choose by task and operating system first, then verify compatibility with your distribution’s GRUB setup.

Compare the five tools by job and environment
| Tool | Environment | Primary job | Scope described by the project or package source |
|---|---|---|---|
| GRUB Customizer | Linux desktop | Edit GRUB 2 or BURG menu settings | Rename, reorder, or delete entries; configure the default entry, timeout, and backgrounds. |
| Grub2Win | Windows | Customize GNU GRUB from Windows | Project says it supports Windows XP through Windows 11, EFI and BIOS firmware, and 32-bit and 64-bit systems. |
| Soplos GRUB Editor | Linux desktop | Edit GRUB2 configuration graphically | Repository lists entries, themes, fonts, backgrounds, custom entries, and advanced kernel parameters. |
| Boot-Repair | Linux recovery environment | Repair frequent boot problems and recover access to installed operating systems | Recovery-focused; the project warns that changing recommended advanced options may worsen problems. |
| MX Boot Repair | MX Linux | Repair or reinstall GRUB | MX Linux repository describes a simple graphical recovery application for MX Linux. |
This is a feature-and-scope comparison based on project and package descriptions, not a controlled test. It does not establish which tool is fastest, safest, or easiest to use.
Which GRUB configuration tool should you choose?
GRUB Customizer: routine menu editing on Linux
The Debian manpage describes GRUB Customizer as a graphical editor for GRUB 2 or BURG. It can rename, reorder, or remove menu entries, and adjust the default entry, timeout, and backgrounds. Fedora’s package description says it aims to retain dynamic configuration by changing script order and generating proxy scripts where needed. That behavior makes distribution compatibility especially important: check the package and guidance for your installed Linux distribution before changing settings.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGrub2Win: configure GRUB from Windows
Grub2Win is intended for people who want to customize GNU GRUB from a Windows environment rather than use a Linux desktop editor. The project says it supports Windows XP through Windows 11, EFI and BIOS firmware, and 32-bit and 64-bit systems. Its changelog lists version 3.0.5.2 dated October 5, 2026, and says version 3.0.5.1 upgraded the embedded GNU GRUB kernel to 2.16. These are project statements, not independent compatibility tests; consult the project’s current instructions for your configuration.

Soplos GRUB Editor: Linux desktop configuration
Soplos GRUB Editor provides a GTK3 graphical interface for GRUB2 configuration. Its repository lists menu entries, themes, fonts, backgrounds, custom entries, and advanced kernel parameters. It reports version 2.0.2 and compatibility with XFCE, Plasma, and GNOME desktops, as well as Wayland and X11. These are upstream repository claims, not independent tests across every distribution or system.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which tools are for boot recovery?
Boot-Repair: general boot-problem recovery
Boot-Repair is described by its project as a utility for frequent boot problems and recovering access to installed operating systems. It is not presented as a general menu-and-theme editor. The project specifically cautions that changing recommended advanced options can make a problem worse; follow its guidance and your distribution’s documentation rather than experimenting with advanced settings.

MX Boot Repair: recovery for MX Linux
The MX Linux repository describes MX Boot Repair as a simple graphical application for reinstalling or repairing GRUB in MX Linux. Its documented scope is distribution-specific, so do not assume it is a general-purpose GRUB settings editor or a repair tool for other distributions.

Check before changing boot-critical settings
GRUB configuration affects whether a computer can start its operating systems. The project descriptions do not establish that these utilities work with every distribution, firmware mode, encryption arrangement, or Secure Boot setup. A GUI can simplify editing, but it cannot eliminate the risk of an incompatible or incorrect configuration.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that the tool supports your Linux distribution or Windows-side setup and the GRUB layout it uses.
- Identify whether you need menu editing or boot recovery; the recovery tools have a different purpose from the editors.
- Follow distribution-specific installation and recovery instructions, and review how configuration changes are generated or applied.
- For Boot-Repair, avoid changing recommended advanced options unless the project or distribution guidance specifically calls for it.
