If you want to try a search engine other than Google, start with the difference that matters most to you: Brave says it uses its own search index; Ecosia may draw results from several providers; and DuckDuckGo, Qwant, and Startpage are other options with privacy-oriented positioning. None is established here as the best choice for every search, so compare the same queries before changing your default.
What to compare before choosing
A search engine can differ in where its results come from, how it handles search data, whether it offers AI-generated answers, and how it supports itself. “Free” means you can use the service without paying; it does not by itself tell you whether the service shows ads or shares data with partners.
- Index and providers: An independent index and results supplied by other search providers are different models. If independence from Google is your priority, check whether the engine can fall back to Google or another provider.
- Privacy: Look for specifics about search terms, IP addresses, cookies, and partner sharing—not just a general privacy label.
- AI features: Check whether generated answers are optional and whether the feature can be disabled.
- Coverage: Results can vary by query and location. The available evidence does not include a controlled quality comparison of these five engines, so no universal ranking is justified.
How the five free alternatives differ
| Search engine | Results and provider model | Privacy and controls | Ads, AI, and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brave Search | Brave says it operates an independent search index. It offers optional Google fallback mixing for queries where its own results may be sparse. | Brave’s Web Discovery Project is opt-in and contributes some search and browsing data to improve its index. | Ad-supported, with an optional paid ad-free tier. “Answer with AI” is optional. Brave says its search site works in most major browsers and can be set as the default. |
| DuckDuckGo | The matching article describes it as relying on partner results; that provider description was not independently verified against current official documentation. | It is positioned as privacy-focused, but its current policy wording was not verified here. Check its current privacy information before relying on a specific data-handling claim. | Current ad and AI details are not established by the sources available for this article. |
| Ecosia | Results and related ads may come from Microsoft Bing, Google, or European Search Perspective (EUSP). The provider can vary with location, device, privacy permissions, and query; EUSP is currently available only in France. Ecosia lets users check which provider powered a result. | Ecosia says it shares search terms and IP addresses with search partners, and anonymizes IP addresses within a maximum of seven days. It says ads are not personalized, although they may be more relevant to a query or general location. | Provider availability varies by region and circumstances. Current AI and pricing details are not established here. |
| Qwant | The matching article describes it as a French search service; its current provider arrangements were not independently confirmed. | The article reports privacy claims and says its Flash Answers AI feature can be disabled in settings. Check Qwant’s current documentation and settings, as these details were not independently confirmed. | Flash Answers is the AI feature described by the matching article; current ad and cost details are not established here. |
| Startpage | The matching article describes it as an aggregator partnering with Google and Microsoft Bing. This arrangement was not independently verified against current official documentation here. | The article reports that Startpage submits requests anonymously and does not share personal information with those partners. Treat this as reported positioning, not a guarantee; consult its current privacy documentation. | Current AI, ad, and cost details are not established here. |
Which one should you try first?
For an independent index
Try Brave Search if you want a provider that says it operates its own index. Its optional Google fallback can help when its own results are sparse, but turn that fallback off if avoiding Google results is part of your reason for switching.

Ecosia is a candidate if you are comfortable with its use of external search providers. Do not assume every result comes from the same provider, or that searches never reach Google or Microsoft; Ecosia says provider choice can vary and describes sharing search terms and IP addresses with search partners.

For a privacy-oriented option
DuckDuckGo, Qwant, and Startpage are presented as privacy-oriented choices in the matching article. The evidence available here does not verify their current policies or all provider arrangements, so read their current privacy pages and settings if those details will determine your choice.
Test results before changing your default
- Choose a few searches you actually make. Include a local or time-sensitive query, a specific factual question, and a search for a topic where you already know useful sources.
- Run the same wording on each engine. Compare whether relevant sources appear, how current they are, and whether the results answer your question without extra searching.
- Check provider and AI controls. For Brave, decide whether to enable Google fallback and whether to use Answer with AI. For Ecosia, check which provider powered a result. For Qwant, verify the current Flash Answers setting if you use it.
- Read the current privacy terms for your finalists. Pay attention to what is collected, how long identifiers are retained, and whether data is sent to search or advertising partners.
- Set a default only after you are satisfied. Brave says it can be set as the default in most major browsers; the exact browser path depends on the browser and version. For the others, use your browser’s current search-engine settings if the service is offered there.
What to expect when moving away from Google
These alternatives may return less comprehensive results for some searches, but the available sources do not establish a measured ranking among them. If a result set is thin, try a more specific query, add a location or date when relevant, or compare another engine. Search coverage is a practical fit question, not a reason to assume one service will be better for every topic.
