You do not need a design subscription or a stack of Christmas-card apps to send a thoughtful holiday greeting. These five services cover different jobs: quick photo cards, flexible graphic design, printable and shareable templates, group signing, and tracked email delivery.
The main difference is how the finished card reaches people. Canva and Adobe Express generally give you a file to download or a sharing option. Greetings Island is built around card sharing and printing. Its Group Cards service collects messages from several people. Paperless Post handles recipient lists, delivery, and open tracking, but its free options have specific limits.

1. Canva: best for a personal photo Christmas card
Canva is a good choice when you want to combine family photos, a longer message, decorative elements, and a precise layout without starting from a blank canvas.

How to make the card
- Open Canva and enter Christmas Card in the search box.
- Choose a template that matches the shape and mood you want.
- Upload your photos, then replace the template images and text.
- Use the drag-and-drop editor to add text, images, icons, shapes, stickers, animations, or other design elements.
- Click Share in the menu bar when the card is ready.
You can share the design by email or social media, or download it for sending yourself. Canva documents JPG and PNG for eCards; PDF is the better choice when you intend to produce a high-resolution printed card. Canva’s eCard Maker documents these sharing and download options.

Watch the free-content labels. Canva has free templates and tools, but not everything displayed in the editor is free. Some assets and features are marked Pro. For example, Magic Write and Dream Lab are listed as free on Canva’s eCard page, while Magic Grab and Translate are marked Pro. Check for the Pro badge before investing time in a template.
Canva is best understood as a design-and-sharing tool, not a full mailing system. Its documented workflow is Share by email or social media, or download the finished file. It does not promise recipient management or delivery tracking for a normal eCard.
2. Adobe Express: best for a clean, designed greeting
Adobe Express suits users who want a card that looks more like a finished marketing design than a decorated document. Its holiday-card templates make it easy to change the message, fonts, photos, colors, graphics, animations, and borders.

- Choose a holiday-card template in Adobe Express.
- Click a text box to replace the sample message or change its font.
- Upload photos and adjust the color theme.
- Add graphics, borders, or animation if they improve the design rather than distract from the greeting.
- Click Download. Adobe Express opens the full editor, where you can finish and download the digital card or share it to social channels.
The documented download formats are PDF, JPG, and PNG. Use JPG or PNG for a card attached to a message, and PDF when the recipient will print it.
Adobe Express Free is available on the web, iOS, Android, and iPad. Adobe’s Free plan page, updated July 17, 2026, lists 100,000+ static and video templates, 4,000+ Adobe Fonts, standard editing tools, 1M+ royalty-free Adobe Stock assets, 5 GB of storage, and 10 days of version history.

There is one important failure mode: Adobe warns that some Adobe Stock assets can change from free to paid without advance notice. If an asset becomes chargeable, search again with the Free filter and substitute another image or graphic. Also, ordering printed cards from the full editor is documented for desktop versions in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. That regional restriction affects print ordering, not digital downloading.
3. Greetings Island Card Maker: best for quick sharing without an account
Greetings Island is the least demanding option when you want to choose a festive design, type a message, and send the result without learning a general-purpose design editor. Greetings Island’s card page states that its Christmas category contains more than 300 templates.

- Open the Greetings Island online card maker and select a Christmas design.
- Personalize the message, colors, fonts, photos, logo, or monogram.
- Use Suggested Messages if you need a starting point.
- Add stickers if appropriate; the editor documents more than 15 sticker themes.
- Choose the sharing or download option.
No sign-up is required for the online card maker. Finished cards can be sent through email, text message, messaging apps, or social media. You can also download a high-quality PDF or image and print it at home.
Before editing, choose the layout that matches the delivery method. Greetings Island supports portrait cards measuring 5×7 inches, landscape cards measuring 7×5 inches, and square cards measuring 5×5 inches, according to its card page. Flat cards work well for digital sharing. Folded cards are mainly intended for printing, although the service also supports animated previews by email.
This is a better fit than Canva when speed matters more than total control. It is also useful if you want a conventional printable card rather than a social-media graphic.

4. Greetings Island Group Cards: best when several people need to sign
For a manager collecting team messages, a family signing from different cities, or a class wishing someone happy holidays, a group card avoids the mess of combining separate replies.
How the group workflow works
- Open the Group Cards page and select Create group card.
- Choose a design.
- Share the signing link with contributors.
- Each contributor opens the link, enters a name and message, and submits it.
- Contributors can also select a GIF from the library or upload a personal photo.
- Review the completed card and choose delivery.
Contributors do not need an account or an app. Only the organizer needs a Greetings Island account. The service states that there is no limit to the number of people who can sign, and the final card displays each message alongside the contributor’s name.
The organizer can enter the recipient’s email for direct delivery, generate a shareable link, download a PDF for printing, or send the PDF as a file. Delivery can be scheduled for a particular date and time, including across time zones, and Greetings Island says the card does not expire.
Check submissions before delivery. The organizer can edit or delete messages before the card is sent, but the service does not promise that contributors can edit their own messages after submitting them. Creating and sending the group card is free; premium designs, animations, and additional features may require an upgrade.
5. Paperless Post: best for delivery controls and open tracking
Paperless Post is the strongest choice when the greeting needs to go to a defined recipient list rather than being passed around as an attachment or link. It supports direct delivery and tracking, but “free” depends on the design, add-ons, and number of recipients.

How to find a genuinely free card
- Open Paperless Post on desktop, mobile, or the app and create an account or sign in.
- Choose Greeting cards to browse designs.
- Apply the free filter.
- Inspect the card’s options before customizing it.
- Remove paid additions such as envelopes, envelope liners, backgrounds, stamps, logos, or Paperless Post Plus features.
- Check the cost in the Create page header panel before sending.
Paperless Post also provides Calculate cost to send & compare pricing in the editor. A free card sent directly through the service is free for the first 50 email addresses or phone numbers. If you do not need tracking, use a Shareable Link. A free design with no paid additions can be distributed to an unlimited number of recipients by email, text, social media, or messaging apps without a Coin charge.
