The most flexible eSIM depends on where you’re going and what you need: regional coverage across the US, Canada, and Mexico; predictable data or an unlimited offer; hotspot sharing; or a way to make calls. These five options serve different use cases, but the available evidence does not support a like-for-like ranking across all three countries. Confirm the plan’s country list, validity, activation trigger, voice features, and current price before buying.
Which eSIM is most flexible for your trip?
Use this shortlist as a starting point, not a universal ranking. The evidence is more detailed for some providers than others: Airalo, aloSIM, and Holafly have regional-plan details in the sources cited below; the Ubigi and GigSky recommendations come from a US-focused comparison. In particular, verify current North American plan terms for Ubigi and GigSky against your itinerary.
| Provider | Useful for | What the available evidence says | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubigi | A value-oriented US option | TechRadar’s 2026 US comparison gave a starting example of $2.90 for 500 MB over one day and assessed value by normalizing price against data and duration. | This is a dated US example, not a quote for a North America regional plan or a guarantee of today’s price. See TechRadar’s US eSIM comparison. |
| Airalo | Choosing among local, regional, and global options | Airalo says it covers 200+ locations and offers packages that include unlimited data, with advance installation and top-ups or automatic renewals where available. Its US page displays examples including a 30-day unlimited package at $68 USD and a North America option linked from $5.50 USD. | Displayed offers can change and are not a like-for-like comparison with other providers. Confirm the package’s country list, renewal terms, and total cost for your trip at Airalo’s US eSIM page. The coverage and customer-count statements are Airalo’s own claims. |
| aloSIM | Travel across the US, Canada, and Mexico when an internet-based number may be useful | aloSIM says its North America eSIM connects across all three countries and describes an associated Hushed number for calls and texts. TechRadar clarifies that this number works over Wi-Fi or mobile data, not as a native cellular voice line. | If you need conventional carrier voice or SMS, verify precisely what the plan provides before relying on it. Check the aloSIM North America page and TechRadar’s comparison. |
| Holafly | Travelers prioritizing an unlimited-data offer | Holafly describes North America coverage in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Its page specifies up to 1 GB of hotspot sharing per day and says coverage may be weaker in remote, mountainous, desert, and national-park areas. | The plan is data-only, without a local number for conventional calls or texts. App-based calls can work over data. Review the terms at Holafly’s North America eSIM page. |
| GigSky | Travelers considering connectivity on a cruise | TechRadar identifies cruise connectivity as GigSky’s distinguishing use case and says it also offers ordinary land plans. | This is secondary comparison evidence, not confirmation of current ship routes, coverage, pricing, or plan conditions. Check the exact itinerary and current terms using TechRadar’s comparison as a starting point. |
What “flexible” means for an eSIM plan
Countries and route
“North America” does not guarantee that every destination on your route is included. Match the plan’s country list to each stop, including border crossings and cruise ports. The reviewed aloSIM and Holafly pages explicitly describe coverage in the US, Canada, and Mexico; check Airalo’s specific regional option rather than assuming every offer covers the same places.
Data, duration, and total cost
Decide how much data you are likely to use and how many days you need it. A small fixed-data package may suit navigation and messaging; an unlimited-data offer may better fit heavier use, but “unlimited” alone does not tell you about hotspot limits or other conditions. Compare the full trip cost for matching countries, duration, data, and features—not a one-day US package against a multi-country regional offer.

For context, TechRadar’s 2026 comparison gave historical US examples of $2.90 for 500 MB over one day for Ubigi and a $4.50 starting price for 1 GB over seven days for Airalo. Those are US-specific examples from that article, not current North America regional quotes. Airalo’s page also displays offers such as a 30-day unlimited package at $68 USD and a North America option linked from $5.50 USD; those displayed prices can change and are not directly comparable without matching plan terms.
Calls, texts, and your regular number
A data eSIM is not automatically a replacement for a mobile number, native cellular voice, or SMS. Holafly’s North America offer is described as data-only. aloSIM’s associated Hushed number is internet-based, according to TechRadar, so it is not the same as a native cellular voice line. If you need ordinary calls or text messages—for example, for account verification or reaching local services—confirm the exact capability rather than assuming “calls and texts” means carrier voice and SMS.

Hotspot and coverage
If you plan to share data with a laptop or another traveler, check the hotspot allowance separately from the plan’s data description. Holafly specifies up to 1 GB per day for hotspot sharing. Its page also cautions that coverage can be weaker in remote, mountainous, desert, and national-park areas; an eSIM cannot guarantee signal where the local network has limited coverage.

Installation and activation
Installing an eSIM and starting its validity are different events. Airalo allows advance installation, while Holafly says its package starts when the eSIM connects to a supported network. Check the selected plan’s activation trigger so you do not start a validity period earlier than intended, and keep internet access available during setup.

How to choose and check a plan
- Map the itinerary. List every country and relevant cruise stop, then verify that the exact plan includes each one.
- Estimate usage and days. Choose fixed data or an unlimited offer based on how you will use your phone, and compare the total cost for the trip’s actual duration.
- Confirm phone features. Check whether you need native cellular calls or SMS, an internet-based number, or data-only service. Do not treat those as interchangeable.
- Check sharing and activation terms. Look for hotspot limits, validity dates, the event that starts the plan, and whether top-ups or renewals are available for the specific offer.
- Verify device compatibility and lock status. Confirm that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked in a way that prevents using another provider.
- Review home-carrier roaming charges. If you leave your primary SIM active, check what your carrier charges for roaming so that calls, texts, or background data do not create an unexpected bill.
What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
The listed providers are not documented on equal terms. Airalo, aloSIM, and Holafly have provider pages describing regional options; Ubigi’s value example and GigSky’s cruise use case come from TechRadar’s US-focused comparison. The available information does not establish a current, directly comparable price table across all five for a US–Canada–Mexico itinerary. Prices, coverage, validity, voice and SMS inclusions, hotspot rules, and availability can change, so verify the live terms for the exact plan before purchase.
