If you’re asking “What apps can someone use to spy on a phone?” or “How can I tell if someone is spying on my cellphone?”, the important distinction is whether monitoring is hidden or shared with consent. Secretly monitoring someone’s phone can expose private messages, location, photos, and other data; this article does not recommend spyware. If your goal is family coordination, Apple and Google offer location-sharing tools people can choose to enable and stop.
Why there isn’t a safe “top five” list of spy apps
Software secretly installed to monitor someone’s device is commonly called stalkerware. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says it can track location, read messages and email, expose photos or browsing activity, and access conversations. Some products hide themselves or disguise their names. That makes a ranked list of “effective” apps an unsafe recommendation—and the available sources do not establish five current apps or independently compare their effectiveness. The FTC’s consumer guidance, updated June 30, 2026, explains the risks.
Installing or using monitoring software without a person’s knowledge can violate their privacy and may create safety and data-security risks. Laws vary by jurisdiction and circumstances, so this is not legal advice. The FTC’s past enforcement actions are not a list of products to try: in 2019, it documented Retina-X products MobileSpy, PhoneSheriff, and TeenShield; it later brought action against SpyFone. Those examples describe enforcement history, not current recommendations. The FTC’s September 2021 SpyFone announcement quoted then Acting Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine: “This case is an important reminder that surveillance-based businesses pose a significant threat to our safety and security.”

Battery drain, higher data use, overheating, or unexpected restarts can be clues, but they have many possible causes and do not prove spyware is present. More concerning signs include someone knowing private details or your precise location when you did not tell them, or having had unsupervised access to your phone. The FTC advises taking care before investigating or changing the device: activity on a monitored phone may alert the person monitoring it.

- Get tailored support. The FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), by text at START to 88788, and at thehotline.org. For immediate danger, contact local emergency services using a safe device.
Some stalkerware may require a rooted Android phone or jailbroken iPhone, meaning built-in security protections were bypassed. That fact alone does not establish that a device is monitored. The FTC’s stalkerware guidance covers warning signs and safety planning; it does not make a symptom checklist a reliable diagnostic test.
Consent-based location sharing: Apple Find My vs. Google Location Sharing
Location sharing is not the same as covert monitoring when each person knows what is shared and can control participation. Apple and Google describe tools that let an account holder choose recipients; availability and exact controls can vary by device, account, and settings.
