Most basic phones cannot run WhatsApp. The important distinction is the operating system: older KaiOS models have lost WhatsApp support, while a small group of keypad and flip phones still use Android or ship with a manufacturer-supported WhatsApp installation.
The five phones below can still run WhatsApp as of August 2026, but they do not offer the same experience. The CAT S22 Flip and Unihertz Jelly Star use Google Play, while the Emporia Touchsmart.2, TTfone TT970 and AGM M7 depend on preinstalled or restricted app versions.
At a glance
| Phone | How WhatsApp is installed | Operating system | Biggest drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emporia Touchsmart.2 | Preinstalled | Android 8.1 Go | No Google Play Store |
| TTfone TT970 | Built in; updated through Aptoide | Android 8.1 | Only 1GB RAM and 8GB storage |
| CAT S22 Flip | Google Play Store | Android 11 Go | Large, heavy and carrier-specific |
| AGM M7 | Preinstalled | Simplified Android-based system | No app store or normal sideloading |
| Unihertz Jelly Star | Google Play Store | Android 13 | A tiny smartphone rather than a true dumbphone |
1. Emporia Touchsmart.2
The Emporia Touchsmart.2 is a senior-focused clamshell with a 3.25-inch touchscreen, physical keypad and shortcut buttons for WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram. WhatsApp is preinstalled, so there is no need to search for it in an app store.

What to know before buying
- You need a data connection or Wi-Fi; WhatsApp does not work over the mobile network by itself.
- Installing unrelated Android apps is not as straightforward as it is on a normal Android phone.
- Android 8.1 leaves limited headroom for future WhatsApp compatibility.
WhatsApp’s announced Android requirement from September 8, 2026 is Android 6.0 or newer, so Android 8.1 is not immediately excluded. That does not guarantee years of additional support: app compatibility can become difficult when a phone’s manufacturer stops updating its bundled software.
Best for: someone who wants a genuine flip-phone layout, large controls and WhatsApp without access to a distracting app ecosystem.
2. TTfone TT970
The TTfone TT970 is a 4G touchscreen flip phone with a simplified Android 8.1 interface. WhatsApp comes installed, and the phone also includes apps such as Facebook Lite, YouTube, email and a web browser.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →It does not have Google Play. Instead, TTfone uses Aptoide for the apps and updates it supports. The published WhatsApp update route is:
APP > Aptoide > Apps > WhatsApp- Open APP from the phone’s menu.
- Choose Aptoide, then open Apps.
- Select WhatsApp.
- Choose UPDATE ALL, select Install, and wait for the “App installed” message.
- Tap Done.
Firmware updates use a separate menu:
APP > Wireless Update > Check for UpdatesLimitations
The TT970 has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. That is adequate for text messages and occasional calls, but photos, videos and voice notes can fill the storage quickly. Disable automatic media downloads in WhatsApp if space becomes a problem.
There is also an unusual call-control issue: the normal flip-to-answer and flip-to-end settings do not reliably control WhatsApp calls because those calls are handled by the third-party app. Check the phone’s supported LTE bands and your carrier’s compatibility before ordering, even though TTfone markets the model in several countries.

The CAT S22 Flip is the closest of the clamshell models to a conventional Android phone. It has a physical keypad, a 2.8-inch touchscreen, 4G connectivity and Android 11 Go Edition. Crucially, it includes Google Play, so WhatsApp can be installed through the standard Android process.
To install it:
Swipe up from the Home screen > Play Store > Search > WhatsApp > InstallYou need to sign in with a Google account to download apps from the Play Store.
Potential problems
- Carrier compatibility: many S22 Flip units were sold for T-Mobile or related U.S. networks. An unlocked phone may work elsewhere, but LTE bands and VoLTE support still have to match your carrier.
- App availability: Android Go has lower memory and compatibility requirements, so some Play Store apps may not be offered.
- Small-screen typing: WhatsApp itself works normally, but its interface was designed for larger touchscreens. The physical keypad does not make every text field easy to use.
- Size and weight: it is rugged and chunky compared with ordinary flip phones.
Best for: buyers who want a flip phone but prefer the normal WhatsApp installation and update path provided by Google Play.
4. AGM M7
The AGM M7 is a rugged 4G bar phone with a 2.4-inch touchscreen, physical keypad and removable battery. WhatsApp is included in the firmware, along with apps such as Facebook, TikTok, Skype and Zello.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe M7 is not full Android in the usual smartphone sense. AGM does not provide Google Play Store access, and its included apps cannot be managed like ordinary Android applications. In practice, WhatsApp is available because AGM supplies it, not because the phone gives you a normal Android app platform.

Reasons to be cautious
- If the bundled WhatsApp version becomes incompatible, you have fewer supported update options.
- You generally cannot install WhatsApp from Google Play or add arbitrary Android apps.
- The 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage are suited to basic use, not a large media archive.
- In the United States, AGM lists support for AT&T and T-Mobile but excludes Verizon, Boost and several other services. MVNO customers should check compatibility directly.
Best for: someone who needs a tough keypad phone and only wants WhatsApp as one of a small number of built-in apps.
5. Unihertz Jelly Star
The Unihertz Jelly Star is technically a tiny smartphone, but its three-inch display and credit-card-sized body make it a useful minimalist WhatsApp device. It runs Android 13, is Google-certified and includes Google Play access.
Install WhatsApp in the usual way:
Open Play Store > Search for WhatsApp Messenger > InstallUnlike the restricted phones in this list, the Jelly Star supports standard Android apps and WhatsApp functionality. It is therefore the strongest choice if app compatibility and update access matter more than having a conventional keypad phone.
Trade-offs
- It remains a smartphone: browsers, social media, games and video apps are readily available.
- Typing on a three-inch touchscreen can be tiring, particularly for long messages.
- Small touch targets make some WhatsApp controls fiddly.
- Unihertz warns that carrier restrictions and regional LTE-band differences can affect service.
Best for: people who want the smallest practical Android phone with standard WhatsApp support, rather than a strict digital-detox device.

KaiOS models
The Nokia 2720 Flip, Nokia 8110 4G, Nokia 6300 4G and similar KaiOS phones are often recommended in older buying guides. That advice is now out of date. WhatsApp ended KaiOS support for new or logged-out users on June 25, 2024. Users who remained logged in received support only into early 2025.
A used KaiOS phone may still show a WhatsApp icon or retain an old installation, but that does not make it a dependable choice for a new purchase or activation.

Nokia 2660 Flip
The Nokia 2660 Flip uses S30+, not Android or KaiOS. It has 4G connectivity, but mobile data alone is not enough to run WhatsApp. The phone also needs a compatible operating system and an app runtime, which the 2660 does not provide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to choose among them
- Choose the CAT S22 Flip if you want a physical flip phone with the most conventional Android and WhatsApp setup.
- Choose the Unihertz Jelly Star if Google Play access and current Android app compatibility matter more than keypad controls.
- Choose the Emporia Touchsmart.2 for a senior-friendly clamshell and a tightly restricted interface.
- Choose the TTfone TT970 if you want an SOS-oriented flip phone and can accept Aptoide, limited storage and older Android.
- Choose the AGM M7 for ruggedness and basic bundled WhatsApp, after confirming carrier support.
Before buying any imported or second-hand model, verify three things: the exact Android version, whether WhatsApp is installed through Google Play or supplied by the manufacturer, and whether the phone supports your carrier’s LTE bands and VoLTE service.
FAQ
Can a dumbphone run WhatsApp in 2026?
Yes, but only some models can. The practical choices use Android, such as the CAT S22 Flip and Unihertz Jelly Star, or include WhatsApp as a supported bundled app, such as the Emporia Touchsmart.2, TTfone TT970 and AGM M7.
Do Nokia 2720 Flip and Nokia 6300 4G still work with WhatsApp?
They are not dependable choices for new WhatsApp users. Both use KaiOS, whose WhatsApp support ended for new or logged-out users in June 2024, with remaining logged-in access ending in early 2025.
Which phone on this list has the best WhatsApp support?
The CAT S22 Flip and Unihertz Jelly Star have the strongest setup because both provide Google Play access. The Jelly Star uses newer Android, while the CAT offers a flip-phone design and physical keypad.

Can the Nokia 2660 Flip run WhatsApp?
No. The Nokia 2660 Flip uses S30+, which does not support WhatsApp. Its 4G connection does not change the phone’s software limitations.
The Bottom Line
For the most dependable WhatsApp experience, choose the CAT S22 Flip if you want a flip phone, or the Unihertz Jelly Star if a tiny touchscreen smartphone is acceptable. The Emporia Touchsmart.2, TTfone TT970 and AGM M7 are more restrictive alternatives: they can handle basic WhatsApp use, but their bundled apps, older Android versions, limited storage and weaker update paths require more caution.
