To understand what your home lab is doing, start by deciding what you want to see: resource use, whether services respond, or a convenient overview of what you run. Beszel and Netdata provide the clearest documented paths here for host and container monitoring; Glances is another broad monitoring candidate, while Uptime Kuma is an availability-monitoring option. A fifth useful experiment is to build a simple dashboard or launcher, which organizes links but does not explain resource use or verify service health.
These are experiments, not a ranked list of five equally verified container recommendations. Each answers a different question, and no single view is guaranteed to identify the cause of an application problem.
First, choose the question you want answered
Home-lab monitoring tools tend to do one or more of three jobs:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Resource monitoring: shows how the host or containers use CPU, memory, storage, and network resources. Historical data can help you spot changes over time.
- Availability monitoring: checks whether a service responds. It can tell you that something is unreachable, but not necessarily why.
- Dashboard or launcher: gathers service links or status views in one place. A launcher is convenient, but it is not a substitute for collecting resource metrics or checking endpoints.
Resource and availability information complement each other: a busy container might point toward resource pressure, while a failed response confirms an availability problem. Neither, by itself, proves the application-level cause.

1. Beszel: see host and container activity together
Beszel uses a hub-and-agent design and documents installation with Docker or Podman. Its official description covers Docker statistics, historical data, and alerts. Its network-monitoring page also describes probes that report response time and packet loss. Beszel documentation
This makes Beszel a useful first experiment if you want a consolidated view of resource use and trends rather than only a current snapshot. The hub displays collected information, while agents gather it from the machines they monitor.
What to pay attention to
- Look at whether a resource change is sustained or brief; historical data helps put a current reading in context.
- Use network probe results to distinguish a response-time or packet-loss issue from a container resource spike.
- Some host metrics, including sensors and storage-related information, may not be available from a container or may need additional configuration.
Understand the Docker socket example
Beszel’s example agent configuration includes a read-only mount of the Docker socket. Read-only describes the mount, but it does not eliminate the security implications of making the Docker API available to a container. Review the project’s current instructions and understand what access the agent receives before adopting the configuration. The example also shows network and host-mode settings; do not expose a monitoring interface beyond your LAN without understanding the network boundary you are creating. Beszel documentation

2. Netdata: inspect container metrics and discovery
Netdata documents monitoring Docker container CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, state, and health information. Its Docker discovery documentation says it can find running containers and create collector jobs for services. Its Homelab plan material describes per-second collection and container visibility. Netdata Docker documentation
Try it when you want detailed, frequent resource readings and want to see whether a particular container’s activity lines up with a slowdown. The official Docker material describes local collection using the Docker API or socket and cgroups. The self-hosted agent is distinct from the optional hosted management layer. Netdata Homelab plan
Local monitoring versus hosted management
The Netdata Homelab page displayed a price of $90 per year when accessed on October 7, 2026. That is a dated vendor-listed price, not a required cost to run a self-hosted agent; check the current plan page for availability and pricing before deciding whether its dashboards, alerting, or multi-node management are useful to you. Think of this as a different experiment from resource monitoring: ask whether a service responds, not how much CPU or memory its container uses. The sources available here do not establish detailed official setup steps or feature behavior, so consult the project’s current documentation before choosing checks or configuring notifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Add a dashboard or launcher for a single entry point
A dashboard or launcher is the fifth experiment when the immediate problem is finding and opening services, rather than measuring them. Put links to the services you already run in one interface, then decide whether you also need separate resource or availability monitoring.
This category is deliberately distinct from the four tools above: the evidence for this topic does not establish a specific fifth dashboard container with verified official setup details. Treat the dashboard as a role to fill, not a claim that a particular product is a proven fifth recommendation. A link page alone will not tell you that a container is exhausting memory or that an endpoint has stopped responding.
Compare the experiments by what they show
| Experiment | Main question | Data or view | Setup and access considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beszel | What are my hosts and containers doing over time? | Docker statistics, historical data, alerts, and network probes | Hub plus agents; the example agent mounts the Docker socket read-only. Some host metrics may need additional configuration. Beszel documentation |
| Netdata | Which containers or services show resource activity? | Container CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, state, and health; Docker discovery | Local collection uses Docker API/socket and cgroups; hosted management is optional. Netdata Homelab plan Netdata Docker documentation |
| Glances | Can a broad system-monitor view help me inspect the machine? | Compact, cross-platform monitoring view; web-interface and Docker topics are documented | Exact beginner setup recommendation: not stated in the cited documentation. Glances documentation |
| Uptime Kuma | Are my services responding? | Availability monitoring, as identified in comparison and community sources | Detailed official setup and feature specifics: not established by the cited sources. Comparison source Community discussion |
| Dashboard or launcher | Can I reach my services from one place? | Centralized service links or overview | No specific fifth product or verified setup is established by the cited sources. |
Try them without turning the weekend into a rebuild
- Pick one observation goal. Choose resource trends, service availability, or easier navigation. Starting with one question makes it easier to judge whether the tool adds useful information.
- Use an existing Docker-capable machine. The cited material does not establish a required hardware model or minimum specification. A spare computer may be enough depending on what else it runs and what you monitor; no new purchase is established as necessary.
- Read the current project instructions before deployment. Exact installation details can change. In particular, review any Docker socket, host networking, or other access configuration and keep dashboards within a network boundary you understand.
- Observe normal activity before drawing conclusions. Check resource readings and service responses during ordinary use, then compare them with the moment a problem occurs. A single reading cannot establish a trend or cause.
- Add another category only if it answers a remaining question. For example, combine resource monitoring with availability checks if you need both consumption and response status; a launcher solves neither monitoring task by itself.
What these tools cannot tell you on their own
Metrics can show correlation, not necessarily cause. A container using more CPU when a service slows down is a useful lead, but it does not prove why the application is slow. Similarly, an availability failure says that a check did not receive the expected response; it does not establish whether the cause is the application, host, network, or check configuration. Use the views to narrow your investigation, then inspect the affected service and its logs.
