If you like Lanterns for its murder investigation and its genre framing, start with True Detective and Mare of Easttown. True Detective matches the dark, layered mystery; Mare of Easttown matches the grounded, small-community murder case. Fargo is the best pick if you want the crime story to carry a stranger, darkly comic edge. The Night Of and Sharp Objects are looser recommendations based on mood and genre rather than any stated link to Lanterns.
What makes Lanterns a detective show
Warner Bros. Discovery’s official press release describes Lanterns as following new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland” (Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom, March 4, 2026). DC’s official article identifies the series as based on Green Lantern and announced an August 16, 2026 premiere on HBO Max (DC, July 29, 2026).
That combination is what makes the show useful as a viewing guide. The core is an Earth-based murder investigation, but the investigators are cosmic law enforcers, so the genre layer sits on top of a conventional crime structure. The shows below each reproduce one part of that mix, not all of it.

How to choose: four questions that matter
Pick the recommendation that matches the feature you enjoy most in Lanterns:
- Serialized or episodic? Does the murder unfold across the whole season, or does each episode close a case?
- Grounded or heightened? Is the setting a real regional community, or does the genre push the world past the ordinary?
- Grim or darkly comic? Do you want a slow-burn tone, or a story with odd humour running alongside the crime?
- Detectives or mystery? Is the partnership between the investigators the main draw, or the puzzle itself?
The five picks at a glance
| Show | Best if you want | How strong the link is |
|---|---|---|
| True Detective | A dark, high-stakes investigation with a layered mystery | Directly supported by HBO’s official description of season three |
| Mare of Easttown | A grounded small-town murder led by a detective under personal strain | Directly supported by HBO’s official catalogue description |
| Fargo | A crime story with an eccentric, darkly comic edge | Critical comparison, attributed to a Le Monde review |
| The Night Of | An investigation whose consequences drive the drama | Editorial extension, not an official influence |
| Sharp Objects | Dark mystery with strong character drama | Editorial extension, not an official influence |
The five recommendations
1. True Detective: the closest match for a dark, layered mystery
HBO’s official description of season three says it follows a macabre crime in the Ozarks, and that the mystery develops over decades and across three timelines (HBO Max LA Press Room, “True Detective”). That structure is the reason it fits: like Lanterns, it treats a single crime as something that opens into a larger, stranger story.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Note that True Detective is an anthology. Each season has its own story and its own cast, so you do not need to watch them in order. Choose a season based on the premise you find most appealing rather than assuming one continuous case runs through the franchise.
2. Mare of Easttown: the closest match for a grounded local murder
HBO’s official catalogue describes Kate Winslet’s character investigating a local murder while her personal life crumbles (HBO, “Best Crime TV Shows”). The appeal is the community around the case: people who know each other, and a detective whose private troubles are never far from the investigation. If the regional, human side of Lanterns is what you value, this is the most direct alternative.

3. Fargo: for a crime story with an eccentric, darkly comic edge
A Le Monde review of Lanterns compared the series with Fargo and True Detective (Le Monde, August 21, 2026). That is critical framing from a reviewer, not a statement from the makers of Lanterns or HBO, and it is the reason Fargo is here. Pick it if you enjoy a crime plot that refuses to take itself too seriously while still delivering real violence and tension.
4. The Night Of: for an investigation with consequences
This is an editorial extension. It is not linked to Lanterns in any official comparison, and this entry does not describe its plot in detail. It suits viewers who want a crime story where the investigation and its aftermath carry equal weight, and who are happy to follow a case through its legal and personal fallout.

5. Sharp Objects: for dark mystery with character drama
Also an editorial extension, not a confirmed influence on Lanterns. It is a neighbouring pick based on mood: a dark mystery in which the investigator’s own history shapes how the case is read. Choose it if the emotional interior of a detective matters to you as much as the puzzle.
Green Lantern comics for source context
If you want to know where the characters come from, Green Lantern comics are the source material DC identifies for the series. Reading them is optional and does not change how the show works as a murder mystery.
Taken together, the five picks cover different parts of the Lanterns formula rather than five copies of it. True Detective and Mare of Easttown are the strongest matches on the evidence; Fargo adds comic tone; The Night Of and Sharp Objects are reasonable next steps once you know which element you want more of.
The Bottom Line
If you want the same investigation structure, start with True Detective. If you want a grounded local case, start with Mare of Easttown. Choose Fargo for tone, and treat The Night Of and Sharp Objects as mood-based extensions rather than direct matches.
