Consumer Reports’ 2026 comparison names five models with higher overall ratings than the Subaru Impreza: the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, Mazda3, Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, and Toyota Prius. That is an overall-score comparison, not a claim that each car beats the Impreza in every category. The available comparison is a secondary account of Consumer Reports ratings, and it does not provide verified numeric Overall Scores for all six cars.
Category context matters: Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists the Impreza as Best Overall among small hatchbacks, while its small-sedan and hybrid lists cover different vehicles. A sedan, hatchback, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid are not interchangeable choices, so compare the body style and powertrain you actually want.
Which five 2026 models rate above the Impreza?
The models below are identified as higher-rated overall in SlashGear’s September 29, 2026 comparison. The source describes relative strengths and weaknesses, but exact Consumer Reports Overall Score values were not available to verify. Treat the ranking as a model-year-specific comparison, and check Consumer Reports’ current model pages before relying on scores or shopping details.

Why a higher overall rating does not settle the choice
An overall score combines different dimensions, and the comparison itself describes tradeoffs. In particular, a higher overall rating does not establish stronger predicted reliability: the Impreza is reported to lead the Elantra Hybrid, Civic Hybrid, Mazda3, and Prius Plug-in Hybrid in that area, and to be slightly ahead of the regular Prius.
Owner satisfaction is a separate measure. Consumer Reports says it reflects the share of surveyed owners who would “definitely” buy the same vehicle again, considering factors such as price, performance, reliability, comfort, and enjoyment. CR also notes that it may use a similar model when it lacks enough survey data for a vehicle. See its owner-satisfaction methodology and 2025 Honda Civic overview for the explanation and example of that approach.

How the five alternatives differ from the Impreza
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid
The comparison puts the Elantra Hybrid at the top and says it scores better than the Impreza on the road test. It also reports an approximately 8% road-test advantage and roughly 50% better test fuel economy. Those figures are reported by SlashGear, not independently verified here against Consumer Reports’ underlying score pages; do not treat them as verified CR statistics. The reported tradeoff is lower predicted reliability and owner satisfaction than the Impreza.
Honda Civic Hybrid
The Civic Hybrid is described as tying the Elantra Hybrid at the top and outperforming the Impreza in road-test results, owner satisfaction, and fuel efficiency, while the Impreza has the stronger predicted-reliability result. The comparison does not establish an across-the-board win for the Civic.

Mazda3
The Mazda3 is the non-hybrid in this group and is placed below the two hybrid leaders but above the Impreza overall. The comparison says its owner-satisfaction result is lower and its predicted reliability does not surpass the Impreza’s. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide places the Mazda3 among small sedans; confirm the exact body style, since the current Impreza lineup is hatchback-only in the comparison’s framing.
Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
The plug-in Prius is reported to top the Impreza in overall rating, road-test results, and owner satisfaction, with the Impreza ahead in predicted reliability. This is a distinct plug-in hybrid option; do not assume its electric range, trim availability, or price from the regular Prius. Those details are not established by the comparison and should be checked against current manufacturer and EPA information.

Toyota Prius
The regular Prius is described as narrowly ahead overall, with stronger owner satisfaction and fuel economy. The Impreza is reported as slightly better in driving experience and predicted reliability. A small overall-score edge should therefore be weighed against those category differences rather than read as a decisive advantage.

The Consumer Reports 2026 Buying Guide, as reproduced in a public-library-hosted guide, names the Impreza Best Overall among small hatchbacks. Its small-sedan list includes the Nissan Sentra, Mazda3, and Toyota Corolla; its hybrid list includes the Elantra Hybrid, Civic Hybrid, Prius, and Corolla Hybrid. These are separate category lists, not a single cross-category overall-score ranking.
That distinction helps explain why the Impreza can remain a strong hatchback choice while several hybrids or a sedan rank higher in a different comparison. The guide is available as the 2026 Consumer Reports Buying Guide PDF.
Quick Recap
How to compare the ratings for your own needs
- Match body style first. Compare the Impreza hatchback with a hatchback if cargo access and form factor matter; compare it with the Mazda3 sedan only if a sedan is an acceptable alternative.
- Choose the powertrain category. The Elantra Hybrid, Civic Hybrid, and regular Prius are hybrids; the Prius Plug-in Hybrid adds plug-in capability. The Mazda3 is a conventional compact-car alternative in this comparison. Do not treat fuel-economy results as directly comparable without accounting for drivetrain and use.
- Separate overall score from reliability. Review both the overall rating and predicted reliability rather than assuming one implies the other. The comparison reports the Impreza as stronger in predicted reliability against these alternatives.
- Decide how much owner satisfaction matters. It captures whether surveyed owners would definitely buy again, rather than a simple measure of reliability or road-test performance.
- Verify the current model year, trims, and prices. The comparison’s trim and price information is time-sensitive, and the available evidence does not establish current prices or all six exact numeric scores. Confirm those details directly before making a purchase decision.
