To keep a cordless vacuum working effectively and help protect your floors, empty its bin, clean its filter as directed, clear the brush roll, choose the right floor head or setting, and inspect parts for blockages or wear. Exact steps vary by model, so follow your vacuum’s owner’s manual whenever its instructions differ from these general tips.
1. Empty the bin and check the airflow path
Empty the dust bin regularly, and make sure it is clean and seated correctly before vacuuming. A full or poorly seated bin can contribute to reduced suction. If pickup drops, check for an obstruction in the airflow path rather than assuming the motor or battery is at fault. BISSELL says an obstruction in the air pathway is a likely cause of reduced suction on its ICONpet models: BISSELL ICONpet suction guidance. The cause can differ on other machines.
2. Clean the filter according to your model’s instructions
Filter-care methods and schedules are not universal. Dyson suggests cleaning its cordless vacuum filter at least once a month, rinsing it with cold tap water without detergent, and letting it dry for at least 24 hours before reinstalling. Dyson’s advice is specific to its machines; check your own manual for the approved method and interval.

Some Electrolux and AEG instructions allow compatible washable parts to be rinsed at a maximum of 40°C and dried for 24 hours. Those instructions do not apply to every filter. Never reinstall a washable filter while it is damp, and replace a filter if your manual says it is not washable or is due for replacement.

Dyson says its cordless machines use at least five layers of filtration and capture 99.99% of dust and bacteria as small as 0.3 microns. 3. Remove hair and fibers from the brush roll
Turn the vacuum off before working on the brush roll. Use the release method in your manual, then remove wrapped hair and fibers as instructed. For example, the BISSELL ICONpet guide describes removing the roll, clearing visible debris, wiping it with a dry cloth, and reinstalling it. Other models may call for a different method, so do not assume the roller can be removed or cleaned the same way. After cleaning, check that it is intact and turns freely.

4. Match the floor head or setting to the surface
Use only a head or setting approved for your vacuum, and check the floor manufacturer’s care guidance before cleaning a delicate surface. A brush bar can damage some floors or carpets.
Settings are model-specific. For example, the Rowenta RH8548U1 FAQ identifies Position 1 for hard floors such as laminate and Position 2 for carpets and rugs. That is not a universal setting chart. Consult your manual for the right head and setting for each surface, and avoid using a worn nozzle that could scratch flooring.

5. Inspect the vacuum before the next clean
If the vacuum is not picking up well, inspect its serviceable parts before concluding that the battery or motor has failed. With the vacuum switched off and disconnected from charging as directed by its manual, check that:
- The bin and filter are correctly installed.
- The nozzle and airflow path are clear.
- The brush roll spins freely and has no visible damage.
- Parts show no wear or damage that could affect cleaning or the floor.
Wear can matter beyond cleaning performance: a Bosch manual warns that floor nozzles wear according to the type of hard floor, and that a worn underside may develop sharp edges capable of damaging parquet or linoleum. Follow the manual’s guidance on servicing or replacing worn parts.
