Short answer: Wix is the best all-purpose website builder for most U.S. small businesses in 2026. Choose Squarespace if polished design is your priority, Shopify if selling products is the core business, GoDaddy if you need a guided launch with appointment booking, and Hostinger if the lowest introductory price matters most.

These platforms solve different problems. A five-page site for a local plumber, a photographer’s portfolio, and a 500-product store should not use the same platform. The comparison below covers realistic plan costs, renewal traps, payment fees, booking, ecommerce, SEO, content, email, international selling, and how difficult it may be to move later.

U.S. pricing checked August 10, 2026. Prices can change by country, currency, billing term, taxes, promotion, and renewal status. Annualized prices are not the same as month-to-month prices, and Hostinger’s headline price requires a 48-month prepaid term.

Quick picks

Rank Builder Best for Recommended starting point Main caveat
1 Wix Best overall for most small businesses Core at $29/month when billed annually Its flexibility and app marketplace can make a site complicated or more expensive over time.
2 Squarespace Design-led service businesses, portfolios, and boutique brands Basic listed at $16/month when billed annually More structured editing, separate scheduling subscriptions, and a 2% store transaction fee on Basic.
3 Shopify Product-focused ecommerce and multichannel retail Basic at $29/month when billed annually Usually excessive for a simple service-business website; apps and payment fees can add materially to cost.
4 GoDaddy Website Builder Fast setup, local services, and appointment booking Premium currently displayed at $14.99/month on an annual offer The displayed price is promotional, and the editor has less design and content flexibility.
5 Hostinger Website Builder Low-cost brochure sites and small stores Premium at $2.99/month equivalent for 48 months; Business at $3.79/month for a store You pay upfront for four years, renewal is higher, and international ecommerce capabilities are limited.

Price note: The amounts above are U.S. reference prices checked August 10, 2026. Review the provider’s live pricing page before buying because taxes, renewal rates, regional availability, and promotional terms may differ.

How this ranking was decided

There is no objective universal winner. The ranking gives the greatest weight to whether a platform fits the business model, not how many features appear on its pricing page. A builder that is excellent for inventory and shipping may be a poor choice for a consultant who only needs a few pages and a contact form.

Criterion Suggested weight What it means
Business-model fit 25% Whether the platform suits a service site, portfolio, appointment business, content site, or store.
Total cost of ownership 20% Plan price, renewal, domain, email, payment processing, platform fees, apps, and add-ons.
Ease of use 15% Onboarding, AI assistance, editor clarity, mobile workflow, and publishing process.
Growth capability 15% Support for additional products, staff, locations, traffic, languages, currencies, integrations, and APIs.
Design flexibility 10% Template quality, layout control, responsive behavior, and brand consistency.
Business tools 10% Booking, forms, CRM, invoices, email marketing, analytics, memberships, and payments.
Portability and lock-in 5% Domain control, content and data export, redirects, and the difficulty of rebuilding elsewhere.

1. Wix: best overall for most small businesses

Best for: Local services, consultants, freelancers, agencies, restaurants, hospitality businesses, and owners who want one flexible platform for pages, leads, booking, payments, and modest ecommerce.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Recommended starting point: Core at $29/month when billed annually.

Wix is the safest general recommendation because it covers more ordinary small-business requirements in one system than most direct competitors. Its editor provides substantial visual control, while the platform also offers hosting, templates, AI-assisted site creation, SEO tools, marketing features, bookings, payments, ecommerce, and a large app ecosystem. Wix says it offers more than 900 templates. See the current Wix plans and Wix’s premium-plan explanation for live limits and regional details.

Wix pricing

Plan U.S. reference price when billed annually What it means for a business
Free $0 Wix branding and a Wix subdomain; useful for experimenting, not most professional businesses.
Light $17/month Suitable for a basic branded site, but not the practical choice for online payments or a store.
Core $29/month The practical entry point for payments, basic ecommerce, and scheduling.
Business $39/month More room for business and commerce features.
Business Elite $159/month For businesses needing substantially higher limits or advanced capabilities.

Wix states that pricing varies by geography, currency, taxes, and billing period. Paid plans include hosting, and eligible plans include a custom domain for the first year. The pricing page also lists 24/7 customer care and a 14-day money-back guarantee. At the displayed annual rates, Core is $348 for the first year before applicable taxes and add-ons.

Why Wix is good for small businesses

  • Flexible visual editing: You can create a conventional service site, landing page, portfolio, restaurant menu, or small store without coding.
  • Broad native coverage: Forms, payments, scheduling, memberships, marketing tools, and ecommerce are available within the wider Wix product ecosystem.
  • Good upgrade path for ordinary businesses: A service company can begin with pages and lead forms, then add booking or payments without immediately changing platforms.
  • Large template and app selection: This helps businesses with unusual requirements, although every added app should be treated as another cost and dependency.
  • Useful AI starting point: AI can accelerate the first draft of pages and copy, but the owner must edit the result.

Wix limitations

  • The freedom of the editor can produce inconsistent spacing, weak mobile layouts, and overly complicated pages when an owner edits without a simple design system.
  • The free plan leaves Wix branding and a Wix-branded URL on the site.
  • Apps and advanced features may introduce recurring charges that are not visible in the basic plan price.
  • Light is not the right plan if the business needs online payments, scheduling, or a store; Core is the more realistic starting point.
  • A Wix site is tied to Wix’s editor and data model. Do not assume that the complete design and every function can be exported as a portable installation. If migration matters, plan for a possible rebuild and verify export options for pages, blog content, products, contacts, and bookings before signing up.

Verdict: Choose Wix when you want the strongest all-purpose compromise between creative control, business tools, and ease of use. For a local service company that may add booking, deposits, memberships, or light selling later, Wix is the best default choice.

2. Squarespace: best for polished design and service businesses

Best for: Creative professionals, photographers, consultants, coaches, wellness businesses, restaurants, boutique brands, portfolios, and small stores where presentation matters more than complex operations.

Recommended starting point: Basic, listed at $16/month with annual billing.

Squarespace is the strongest design-led choice. Its templates and editor encourage visual consistency, so a business can launch a polished website without making dozens of layout decisions. The platform includes mobile-optimized sites, SSL, analytics, SEO tools, blogging, memberships, courses, invoices, and selling tools. The Squarespace pricing page confirms the current four-plan structure, annual billing, a 14-day trial, and savings of up to 36%; the exact checkout price can vary by region and offer.

Squarespace pricing and commerce fees

The current website plans are Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced. Basic is listed at $16/month with annual billing by current comparison coverage, but confirm the live checkout price before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan Important cost or capability
Basic Listed at $16/month annually; 2% online-store transaction fee; digital content and membership fees are plan-dependent.
Core 0% online-store transaction fee; more contributor and customization capacity.
Plus 0% online-store transaction fee; lower digital-content and membership fee than Basic or Core.
Advanced 0% online-store transaction fee; 0% listed fee for digital content and memberships.

Squarespace’s current comparison lists digital-content and membership fees of 7% on Basic, 5% on Core, 1% on Plus, and 0% on Advanced. U.S. Squarespace Payments standard card processing is listed at 2.9% + $0.30. A 0% platform transaction fee on a higher plan does not mean payment processing is free. See the official transaction-fee and payment-rate documentation.

Why Squarespace is good for small businesses

  • Strong visual starting point: Templates look intentional and professional with relatively little design maintenance.
  • Good service-business workflow: A consultant, therapist, coach, designer, or restaurant can combine services, inquiry forms, content, testimonials, and a strong portfolio.
  • Broad content tools: Blogging, memberships, courses, digital content, analytics, and SEO are available without assembling a large plugin stack.
  • Unlimited products and services: The current plan structure supports unlimited products and services, although that does not make Squarespace equivalent to a large-scale inventory platform.
  • Subscriptions: Eligible plans can support subscriptions for physical products and services. Subscription features should be checked against the exact plan and business location.

Squarespace limitations

  • The editor is more structured and less freely placeable than Wix. That improves consistency but can frustrate owners who want pixel-level layout freedom.
  • Advanced custom code has plan restrictions. Squarespace’s documentation says JavaScript or iframe code in code blocks is not functional on the Basic plan; review the plan-specific selling and code documentation.
  • Acuity Scheduling, domains, Email Campaigns, Google Workspace, and some other products can be separate subscriptions rather than part of the website plan. Do not treat the website subscription as a complete software budget.
  • Basic may be poor value for a store because the 2% platform fee is charged in addition to card processing.
  • Shopify is a better fit for complex inventory, shipping, international selling, multiple sales channels, or a large product catalog.

Verdict: Choose Squarespace when the site is a major part of the brand and a polished result matters more than maximum customization. For a small portfolio, consultancy, wellness practice, or boutique service business, it can be a better choice than Wix if the editor’s structure suits you.

3. Shopify: best when ecommerce is the business

Best for: Product businesses, retailers selling online and in person, subscription and repeat-purchase brands, stores with multiple sales channels, larger catalogs, and businesses expecting inventory or order growth.

Shopify is included because a serious product business needs more than a website editor. Shopify provides the operational foundation for a store: products, inventory, checkout, shipping, discounts, gift cards, abandoned-checkout recovery, marketing automation, analytics, sales channels, marketplace integrations, point of sale, and international selling features. Review the current Shopify pricing table and plan-selection guidance.

Shopify pricing

Plan Monthly billing Annual billing equivalent Typical role
Basic $39/month $29/month Solo entrepreneur or small store.
Grow $105/month $79/month Small team and a growing operation.
Advanced $399/month $299/month Higher-volume or internationally oriented business.
Plus From $2,300/month Custom enterprise-level arrangement Larger organizations with advanced commerce requirements.

At the annual Basic rate, the subscription is $348 for a year before taxes, apps, domain, shipping, and payment fees. Basic includes unlimited products and, according to the current comparison table, 10 inventory locations. Basic has no additional staff accounts; Grow includes up to five staff accounts and Advanced up to 15 according to the current pricing table.

Shopify payment and transaction fees

For U.S. Shopify Payments online card transactions, the current listed starting rates are 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow, and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify lists additional transaction fees of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, and 0.6% on Advanced. Rates and Shopify Payments availability depend on country, payment method, and eligibility. The Shopify pricing documentation explains the distinction.

For example, a $100 U.S. order on Basic processed through Shopify Payments would incur the listed starting card fee of $3.20. A third-party provider could add Shopify’s 2% fee, or $2 on that order, before that provider’s own terms. Actual costs depend on the order and payment setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why Shopify is good for small businesses

  • Commerce depth: It is designed around the catalog, checkout, order, inventory, and fulfillment workflow rather than treating selling as an add-on.
  • Multichannel selling: Stores can connect online, social, marketplace, and in-person selling channels.
  • Point of sale: A retailer can use Shopify for online and physical transactions rather than maintaining disconnected systems.
  • International options: Shopify Markets supports localized selling, local currencies, local payment methods, local domains, and duties or tax collection where eligible. Review the Markets documentation because features depend on country and payment setup.
  • Growth path: Higher plans add staff capacity, lower listed card rates, and more advanced commerce capabilities.

Shopify limitations

  • It is usually too much platform for a five-page service website. You pay for commerce infrastructure even if you only need a phone number, services page, and inquiry form.
  • The design editor is generally more constrained than Wix or Squarespace, particularly for unusual marketing-page layouts.
  • Apps can turn a seemingly reasonable subscription into a large monthly software bill. Audit app charges and whether each app is still needed.
  • Payment fees can affect margins, especially for low-value orders or businesses using a third-party processor.
  • Subscription products and specialized workflows may require an app rather than being included in the base plan.

Verdict: Choose Shopify when products, inventory, shipping, multiple channels, or international commerce are central. Choose Wix or Squarespace instead when selling is occasional and the primary job of the site is generating leads or presenting a brand.

4. GoDaddy Website Builder: best for a fast local launch and booking

Best for: Contractors, home-service businesses, salons, tutors, consultants, appointment-driven businesses, and owners who want a guided setup with domain, marketing, booking, invoicing, and payments in one dashboard.

Recommended starting point: Premium at the currently displayed $14.99/month annual-plan offer if appointments are required.

GoDaddy Website Builder prioritizes speed and guided setup over deep creative control. Its current product combines a website builder with AI assistance, domains, analytics, marketing, social posting, appointment booking, payment links, invoicing, and ecommerce. The official GoDaddy Website Builder page is the authority for the current offer and geographic restrictions.

GoDaddy pricing and plan differences

Plan Displayed annual-plan offer Important features
Basic $9.99/month, or $119.88 at that annualized rate Website, custom domain, AI tools, analytics, basic marketing, 100 monthly email-marketing sends, social posting, payment links or QR-code payments in the U.S. and Canada, U.S. invoicing, and donations.
Premium $14.99/month, or $179.88 at that annualized rate Online booking, appointment payments and deposits, 25,000 monthly email sends, and expanded marketing.
Commerce $20.99/month, or $251.88 at that annualized rate Unlimited products and services, 0% online-store transaction fees, listed U.S. ecommerce card rate of 2.7% + $0.30, automatic U.S. sales-tax calculation, and shoppable social posts in the U.S. and Canada.

These are promotional annual-plan prices displayed by GoDaddy, not guaranteed renewal prices. The page’s savings language means the advertised monthly amount is based on an annual commitment. Confirm the first-term total, renewal total, taxes, and any separate email or payment charges at checkout.

Why GoDaddy is good for small businesses

  • Fast guided setup: The onboarding is aimed at owners who want a usable site quickly rather than a blank design canvas.
  • Useful for appointments: Premium and higher plans list booking, appointment payments, and deposits, which are important for services that reserve time.
  • Marketing in the same dashboard: Email marketing, social posting, analytics, and basic promotional tools are integrated into the workflow.
  • Low operational friction: A business already using GoDaddy for a domain or other services may prefer one account and support channel.
  • Templates and AI: GoDaddy lists more than 100 templates and AI tools for creating a starting site and content.

GoDaddy limitations

  • Basic is not a full online store; it provides payment links and QR-code payments rather than the complete Commerce workflow.
  • Design and content-management flexibility are weaker than Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress.
  • Payment links, invoicing, tax, and social-commerce features have geographic restrictions. Several listed payment features apply specifically to the U.S., Canada, or U.S. businesses.
  • Businesses with advanced SEO requirements, complex content, extensive integrations, or a large catalog may outgrow the platform.
  • A low first-year offer should not be confused with a low long-term cost. Check renewal pricing and third-party email costs separately.

Verdict: GoDaddy is a practical choice when the main goal is to launch a credible local-business site quickly and accept bookings or deposits. Choose Wix if you expect to need more layout control, content depth, or customization later.

5. Hostinger Website Builder: best budget option

Best for: New businesses with a strict budget, simple service sites, modest stores, and owners willing to pay for a long prepaid term in exchange for a low introductory equivalent price.

Recommended starting point: Premium for a brochure site; Business for any store that needs to accept payments.

Hostinger pricing, commitment, and renewal

Plan Current displayed offer After the promotional term Key limits
Premium Website Builder $2.99/month equivalent for 48 months, paid upfront at $143.52 Renews at $10.99/month Up to three websites and 20 GB storage; can create a store but cannot accept actual payments.
Business Website Builder $3.79/month equivalent for 48 months, paid upfront at $181.92 Renews at $16.99/month Up to 50 websites, 50 GB storage, ecommerce for up to 1,000 products, and zero advertised platform transaction fees.

At the listed renewal rate, another 48 months would cost $527.52 on Premium or $815.52 on Business before taxes, domain renewal, payment processing, and add-ons. Those calculations are illustrations of the current listed rates, not a promise that future renewal pricing will remain unchanged. Review the live Hostinger Website Builder pricing before committing.

Why Hostinger is good for small businesses

  • Low initial cost: It is attractive for a new business that can afford the upfront four-year payment and does not need advanced functionality.
  • AI-assisted setup: The tools can generate a first draft of the site, written copy, images, logos, products, and SEO suggestions.
  • Small-store support: The Business plan supports physical and digital products, services, appointments, donations, and print-on-demand, with up to 1,000 products according to Hostinger’s documentation.
  • Useful inclusions: Eligible plans include a free domain for one year and email mailboxes for one year, plus hosting and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • No advertised platform transaction fee on Business: This does not eliminate card-processing or other payment-provider charges.

Hostinger limitations

  • The $2.99 and $3.79 figures are monthly equivalents for a 48-month prepaid purchase, not flexible month-to-month prices.
  • Premium can build a store but cannot accept actual payments; Hostinger says payment methods require the Business plan.
  • Hostinger’s current ecommerce documentation says multiple currencies and multiple languages are not currently supported natively. That makes it a poor fit for a multilingual or internationally localized store.
  • It has a smaller ecosystem and less depth for complex integrations, advanced international commerce, and specialized business operations than Shopify.
  • Plan names, limits, and AI features are evolving quickly, so verify the current details before publishing a store or committing to a long term.

Verdict: Choose Hostinger when minimizing initial cost is more important than maximum flexibility and the site’s requirements fit its current limits. For a serious store, international business, or rapidly growing operation, the lower headline price may create a costly platform change later.

Which builder is best for your type of business?

Business type First choice Alternative Why
Local service business Wix GoDaddy Wix provides more room for pages, forms, branding, and future features; GoDaddy is faster for a simple launch.
Consultant or freelancer Squarespace Wix Squarespace offers strong visual presentation; Wix offers more editor freedom and app flexibility.
Creative portfolio Squarespace Wix Squarespace’s templates make polished presentation easier to maintain.
Appointment-based business Wix or GoDaddy Squarespace plus Acuity Wix lists scheduling on Core and above; GoDaddy lists booking and deposits on Premium and above; Acuity is a separate Squarespace subscription.
Product store Shopify Wix or Squarespace Shopify is built for catalog, inventory, fulfillment, and channels; Wix or Squarespace work for lighter selling.
Budget starter site Hostinger GoDaddy Hostinger has the lowest displayed introductory equivalent price, while GoDaddy avoids a four-year prepayment.
Content-heavy business WordPress.com Squarespace WordPress offers a deeper publishing and plugin path; Squarespace is simpler and more design-led.
International ecommerce Shopify Qualified WordPress/WooCommerce setup Shopify provides stronger documented support for localized selling, currencies, payment methods, domains, and duties where eligible.

The easiest builder for a nontechnical owner

If easiest means the least decision-making, GoDaddy is the most guided option in this shortlist. Its AI-assisted setup and marketing dashboard are designed to get a local site online quickly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If easiest means a visual editor that can handle more business types, Wix is the better choice. It gives a nontechnical owner more control, but that also means more opportunities to create inconsistent layouts. Use a small set of fonts, colors, button styles, and spacing rules rather than changing every section independently.

Squarespace is easiest for someone who values a polished template and is comfortable working within a more structured editor. Shopify is easiest for store operations, not necessarily for building a conventional marketing site. Hostinger is easy to start but requires the buyer to understand the four-year payment and plan limitations.

Booking, payments, and ecommerce: check the workflow, not the feature label

A plan that says it supports booking or selling may still be unsuitable for the actual workflow. Before buying, answer these questions:

  • Is booking native, or does it require a separate subscription or app?
  • Can customers pay deposits, or only submit a request?
  • Can the business separate calendars for multiple staff members?
  • Are recurring appointments supported?
  • Do reminders, cancellations, rescheduling, and no-show policies exist on the selected plan?
  • Can the business sell physical products, digital products, services, subscriptions, memberships, or donations?
  • Are card processing, platform transaction, currency-conversion, and chargeback fees separate?

For the five recommended builders:

  • Wix: Core and higher plans are the practical starting point for payments, basic ecommerce, and scheduling. Verify the exact Wix Bookings workflow and plan limits before relying on deposits or staff calendars. The pricing page is the current starting point.
  • Squarespace: Online-store transaction fees are 2% on Basic and 0% on Core, Plus, and Advanced, but payment processing still applies. Acuity Scheduling is a separate product subscription, and digital-content or membership fees vary by plan.
  • Shopify: Best for a product catalog, inventory, shipping, order processing, POS, and sales channels. Specialized subscriptions or memberships may require apps, and app costs belong in the budget.
  • GoDaddy: Premium and above list online booking, appointment payments, and deposits. Commerce adds the full store workflow, unlimited products and services, and 0% online-store transaction fees in the listed plan comparison.
  • Hostinger: Business is required for payment methods. It supports a smaller store and several service or product types, but its language and currency limitations matter for international selling.

Real website-builder costs: what the advertised price leaves out

The subscription is only one part of the budget. Separate these five costs before comparing platforms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Subscription: The builder or hosting plan.
  2. Renewal: The amount charged after the initial promotional term.
  3. Domain renewal: A free domain commonly applies only to the first year and eligible extensions.
  4. Payment processing: The card or payment-provider fee on each transaction.
  5. Add-ons: Business email, scheduling, apps, premium templates, marketing, shipping, advanced analytics, memberships, and professional setup.

For example, the displayed first-year annualized subscription for Wix Core and Shopify Basic is $348, while Squarespace Basic is listed at $192. GoDaddy Premium is currently displayed at $179.88 for a year at its promotional annualized rate. Hostinger Premium is $143.52 upfront for 48 months, and Business is $181.92 upfront for 48 months. Those numbers are not directly comparable: they use different billing commitments and may include different features.

Platform transaction fees versus payment-processing fees

These are different charges:

  • Squarespace Basic: 2% online-store transaction fee, plus payment processing. Higher current plans list 0% online-store transaction fees, but card-processing charges remain.
  • Shopify: The listed card rates apply when using Shopify Payments. Using a third-party provider adds Shopify’s listed 2%, 1%, or 0.6% fee depending on plan, in addition to the provider’s own terms.
  • GoDaddy Commerce: Advertises 0% online-store transaction fees and lists a U.S. ecommerce card rate of 2.7% + $0.30.
  • Hostinger Business: Advertises zero platform transaction fees, but the payment processor still charges according to its own rate.
  • Wix: Payment and commerce costs depend on the selected Wix plan, payment method, geography, and any apps; verify the current checkout and payment terms.

For a simple illustration, a $100 U.S. order at a listed 2.9% + $0.30 card rate costs $3.20 in card processing. A Squarespace Basic store would also have the listed 2% platform fee, or $2 on that order. The actual rate can vary by provider, card type, country, currency, and eligibility.

TechRadar’s small-business-builder comparison also warns that domains, apps, payment processing, transaction fees, chargebacks, and professional services can make the real cost substantially higher than the plan advertisement.

SEO: compare controls, not promises

Every shortlisted builder provides some SEO tools or describes itself as SEO-friendly, but no website builder guarantees search rankings. Rankings depend on the business, content quality, competition, reviews, links, technical configuration, and customer behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At minimum, verify that the selected plan lets you control:

  • Page titles and meta descriptions.
  • Readable URL slugs.
  • Image alt text and file handling.
  • Canonical settings and indexing controls where needed.
  • Redirects when a page URL changes.
  • XML sitemap behavior.
  • Structured data for relevant content.
  • Analytics and conversion tracking.
  • Blog or resource publishing.
  • Fast, mobile-responsive page layouts.

Wix and Squarespace are strong choices for owners who want built-in SEO and content tools without managing a technical stack. Shopify provides practical SEO controls for stores but must be evaluated alongside product URLs, collections, apps, and international-market configuration. Hostinger includes SEO assistance, but its broader commerce limits may matter more than the SEO checklist. If publishing and extensibility are the main requirements, WordPress.com offers a deeper path.

Local-business requirements the builder cannot solve by itself

A website builder is only one part of local marketing. Whichever platform you choose, keep the business name, address, phone number, hours, and service area accurate and consistent. Add clear calls to action such as call, request a quote, book now, or visit the store.

A useful local-business site should include:

  • A dedicated page for each important service where that information genuinely helps customers.
  • A service area or location page that explains where the business works.
  • Accurate hours, seasonal closures, and holiday availability.
  • A click-to-call phone number and a simple quote or contact form.
  • Booking or payment instructions that work on a phone.
  • Real reviews and testimonials, used honestly and with permission.
  • Analytics and conversion tracking so calls, forms, and bookings can be measured.
  • A process for updating prices, availability, service areas, and seasonal information.

No builder automatically guarantees local search rankings. The owner still needs accurate business information, a maintained business listing, useful service content, and a reliable process for collecting and responding to customer reviews.

Core functionality checklist before you subscribe

Do not choose a platform only from a template preview. Confirm these items on the exact plan and in the business’s country:

  • Custom domain: Can you connect your existing domain, and who controls the registrar account?
  • HTTPS and SSL: Is secure browsing included without a separate certificate purchase?
  • Mobile design: Can you inspect and correct the phone layout rather than trusting the desktop preview?
  • Contact forms: Where are submissions delivered and stored, and can multiple people receive them?
  • Phone, map, and service area: Can customers call, find, or understand the service territory quickly?
  • Services or products: Can you show prices, variants, availability, and policies clearly?
  • Reviews and testimonials: Can the content be updated without a redesign?
  • Analytics: Can you connect the measurement tools you need?
  • Search controls: Can you edit titles, descriptions, URLs, image text, redirects, and indexing settings?
  • Social and email capture: Can visitors follow, subscribe, or contact the business without friction?
  • Privacy and cookies: Can you publish the disclosures required for your business and audience?
  • Accessibility-conscious design: Can you use readable contrast, keyboard-friendly navigation, descriptive labels, captions, and meaningful alt text?
  • Backups or revision history: What recovery options exist if an edit or integration breaks the site?
  • Domain and data ownership: Can you export or retrieve content, contacts, products, and orders if you leave?

Important feature questions answered

Which builders include a custom domain?

Paid plans are the normal route for connecting a custom domain. Wix paid plans, eligible GoDaddy annual Website Builder plans, and eligible Hostinger plans list a domain for the first year. A first-year domain promotion is not the same as permanent free registration; check the renewal price and eligible extensions. Connecting a domain and transferring its registration are also different processes. Keep control of the registrar account even if the website is hosted elsewhere.

Do these builders include business email?

Do not assume that a website plan includes a permanent professional inbox. Hostinger lists email mailboxes for one year on eligible plans. Squarespace identifies Google Workspace as a separate subscription, and other platforms may offer email forwarding, a trial, or a separate mailbox product rather than a full inbox. If email matters, price the mailbox separately and verify whether you can keep it when the website is canceled.

Can the site add a blog later?

A simple blog or resource section is a normal requirement for Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, GoDaddy, and Hostinger, but publishing depth, templates, taxonomy, redirects, and editorial workflow vary. If the business expects to publish frequently, host a large knowledge base, or depend on plugins and advanced content controls, WordPress.com is the more serious alternative.

Can multiple people edit the site?

Contributor and staff limits vary by plan. Squarespace’s current documentation says Basic allows two contributors while higher plans allow unlimited contributors. Shopify’s current comparison lists no additional staff accounts on Basic, up to five on Grow, and up to 15 on Advanced. Check Wix, GoDaddy, and Hostinger’s current user permissions if a marketing agency, assistant, or multiple employees will edit the site.

Can the business sell digital products, subscriptions, or memberships?

Wix supports memberships and commerce features on appropriate plans. Squarespace supports digital content, memberships, courses, and eligible subscriptions, with fees that vary by plan. Hostinger Business supports physical products, digital products, services, appointments, donations, and print-on-demand. Shopify is the strongest commerce foundation, but specialized subscription and membership workflows may require apps. Confirm the exact product type, payment method, tax behavior, and plan before building the catalog.

Can an appointment business accept deposits?

GoDaddy explicitly lists appointment payments and deposits on Premium and above. Wix lists scheduling and services on Core and above, but the business should verify its exact deposit and calendar workflow. Squarespace can use Acuity Scheduling, which is a separate subscription. A booking badge alone does not confirm that reminders, staff calendars, deposits, recurring appointments, cancellations, and rescheduling work as required.

Are AI-generated pages and copy ready to publish?

No. AI is useful for producing a first draft, but every generated page needs human review. Remove invented services, inaccurate prices, fake testimonials, unsupported guarantees, generic claims, and images that do not represent the business. Check image licensing and commercial suitability, maintain a consistent tone, and verify that the AI has not made accessibility or privacy mistakes.

Which builder supports multilingual and multicurrency selling?

Hostinger’s current ecommerce documentation says multiple languages and multiple currencies are not currently supported natively. Shopify documents localized selling, local currencies, local payment methods, local domains, and duties or tax collection through Shopify Markets where eligible. For Wix, Squarespace, or GoDaddy, verify the exact language, currency, payment, tax, and regional setup before promising an international checkout experience.

Free plans, trials, and cancellation

Free plans are generally for testing rather than operating a professional business. Wix, GoDaddy, and WordPress.com offer free starting options, but free sites typically use a platform-branded domain, display platform branding, or restrict important business features. Squarespace offers a 14-day trial. Hostinger’s Website Builder offers a trial and paid plans rather than a permanently free publishing plan. See the provider pricing pages for the current terms.

Before canceling a hosted builder, complete this checklist:

  1. Keep the domain active; do not allow its registration to expire while moving the website.
  2. Export or manually save page copy, images, blog posts, product data, customer contacts, orders, and invoices where the platform permits.
  3. Make a list of every current URL and create a redirect plan for the replacement site.
  4. Document forms, booking calendars, payment settings, analytics, email addresses, integrations, and DNS records.
  5. Build and test the replacement site before canceling the old plan.
  6. Confirm what happens to bookings, memberships, subscriptions, customer data, and email after cancellation.
  7. Keep the old site or a usable backup long enough to catch missing pages and broken links.

Hosted builders trade portability for convenience. They bundle hosting, security, maintenance, and editing, but the business remains dependent on the provider’s editor, data model, pricing, and policies. Ask whether pages, blog content, products, redirects, forms, bookings, and customer data can each be exported; do not assume that one export covers everything.

Strong alternatives to the five listed builders

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is a serious alternative for content-heavy businesses, publishers, and companies that need plugins without separately managing a server. As of 2026, WordPress.com says plugin installation is available on all paid plans, while its Business plan adds backups, staging, SFTP/SSH, database access, advanced SEO, and developer tools.

Do not confuse WordPress.com with self-hosted WordPress.org. WordPress.org is open-source software installed on hosting chosen by the site owner; WordPress.com is a hosted service operated by Automattic. Self-hosting offers more ownership and extensibility, but it also makes the owner responsible for hosting decisions, updates, backups, security, and maintenance. WordPress is not in the main five because it involves more concepts than a pure drag-and-drop builder, not because it lacks capability.

Square Online

Square Online deserves consideration if the business already uses Square payments or point-of-sale tools. It can be a logical way to connect an existing product catalog and in-person operation, but verify current pricing, POS integration, product limits, payment terms, and regional availability before choosing it.

Webflow

Webflow can suit a design-led team or agency that needs more layout and interaction control than Wix or Squarespace. It is usually less beginner-friendly and excessive for a conventional local-business site maintained by one owner.

IONOS

IONOS may appeal to readers prioritizing low introductory pricing, bundled hosting, or security features. Its offers vary significantly by billing term and promotion, so compare renewal pricing and included features separately rather than relying on an old listicle.

A practical decision tree

  1. Is selling products the central business activity? Choose Shopify if catalog, inventory, shipping, sales channels, or international commerce matter. Consider Wix or Squarespace only for light selling integrated into a broader brand site.
  2. Is the business mainly services, leads, or appointments? Choose Wix for flexibility, or GoDaddy for the fastest guided launch and straightforward booking.
  3. Is the site primarily a portfolio or visual brand experience? Choose Squarespace unless you need Wix’s more open layout control.
  4. Is the budget the overriding concern? Consider Hostinger, but accept the 48-month upfront commitment and confirm that the Business plan supports the payment, language, currency, and product requirements.
  5. Will publishing, plugins, or long-term extensibility dominate? Consider WordPress.com or a properly managed self-hosted WordPress installation.
  6. Are you still unsure? Start with Wix Core for the safest general-purpose path, but do not use it as a substitute for checking the business’s actual booking, store, contributor, and export requirements.

What to prepare before building

The platform cannot write a clear business strategy for you. Prepare these materials first:

  • Business name, domain preference, logo, colors, and preferred visual style.
  • A one-sentence explanation of what the business does and who it serves.
  • Services or products, prices, variants, availability, and the quote process.
  • Service area, address, phone number, email, hours, holiday schedule, and parking or access instructions.
  • Original photos, team information, credentials, policies, and real customer testimonials.
  • Primary call to action: call, request a quote, book, buy, visit, or subscribe.
  • Payment processor, booking calendar, email, analytics, and social accounts.
  • Privacy, refund, shipping, cancellation, accessibility, and cookie disclosures relevant to the business.

Build the smallest useful version first: homepage, services or products, about, contact or booking, policies, and any location or service-area pages that customers genuinely need. Test every form, phone link, checkout step, booking confirmation, mobile layout, and analytics event before announcing the site.

Final recommendation

For most U.S. small businesses, start with Wix Core. It offers the best balance of visual control, business features, booking, payments, and future expansion without requiring a technical project.

Choose Squarespace when design quality and brand presentation are the deciding factors. Choose Shopify when the business is fundamentally a store. Choose GoDaddy Premium when a local service business needs a fast launch with booking and deposits. Choose Hostinger Business only when its four-year commitment and current ecommerce limits fit the business precisely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest small-business website builder after the introductory period?

Among the renewal figures listed by the providers in this comparison, Hostinger Premium is $10.99/month and Business is $16.99/month after the displayed 48-month introductory term. That does not necessarily make Hostinger the cheapest total solution: the plans require a large upfront payment, and domain renewal, email, payment processing, scheduling, apps, and missing features can change the total cost.

Can I build a small-business website for free?

You can usually create or publish a test site with a free Wix, GoDaddy, or WordPress.com option, but free plans commonly use platform branding or a platform subdomain and restrict business features. A professional business site normally needs a paid plan and a custom domain. Hostinger’s Website Builder uses a trial and paid publishing plans rather than a permanently free publishing tier.

Is Wix better than Shopify for a small business?

Wix is better for most service businesses and light ecommerce because it combines flexible pages, forms, booking, and payments. Shopify is better when products, inventory, shipping, point of sale, multiple sales channels, or international commerce are central. Choose based on the business model, not on which platform has more features.

Can I move my website to another builder later?

You can move a domain and rebuild a site elsewhere, but hosted builders do not necessarily provide a complete one-click export of the design, apps, forms, bookings, memberships, or store data. Before signing up, verify export options for every important data type and keep a copy of content, images, products, contacts, and URL redirects.

Will an AI website builder create a finished business website?

AI can create a useful first draft, but it should not be published without careful editing. Check every service, price, claim, testimonial, image, policy, and contact detail. AI-generated layouts may also need mobile, accessibility, brand, and conversion improvements.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Wix is the best default for most small businesses; Squarespace wins for design, Shopify for serious ecommerce, GoDaddy for guided setup and booking, and Hostinger for a low-cost but more limited start. Compare renewal pricing, payment fees, add-ons, and migration options—not just the number shown in the monthly price box.
