A phone usually cannot measure blood oxygen by itself. The apps in this guide display or store readings from supported hardware: an Apple Watch or a Bluetooth fingertip pulse oximeter. For most people seeking a phone-connected spot check, an app that pairs with a compatible fingertip oximeter is the more direct fit; Apple Blood Oxygen is an option only for people with supported Apple Watch hardware. None of these apps should replace medical advice or symptom monitoring.

How the five options compare

App or ecosystem Required hardware and phone support Reading style and data handling Health integration or clinician role Important qualification
Apple Blood Oxygen Supported Apple Watch; iPhone Health stores results. Apple documents Apple Watch Series 6 or later and Apple Watch Ultra. On-demand and background readings; results appear in Health. Health app history; clinician oversight not stated by Apple as a feature. Feature availability and analysis behavior depend on country and watch part number. Apple says it is for general fitness and wellness, not medical use.
NoninConnect NoninConnect or NoninConnect Elite Bluetooth LE pulse oximeter with iPhone or iPad. Spot readings of SpO2 and pulse rate, with trends. Can share data with Apple Health; clinician oversight not stated in the app description. Requires a compatible Nonin device; Android support not stated by Nonin in the information summarized here.
Masimo SafetyNet Masimo connected monitoring device and the patient/clinician platform. Receives data from continuous or spot-check devices and sends trends to clinicians. Built around clinician-connected monitoring. Not positioned as a casual, standalone phone app; specific device and availability depend on the monitoring setup.
Masimo Professional Health Masimo MightySat Rx fingertip oximeter with iOS or Android. Displays SpO2, pulse rate, perfusion index, and optional additional metrics; supports trends and export. Export is described; Apple Health or Samsung Health integration and clinician oversight are not stated here. Requires the compatible MightySat Rx hardware. Masimo states the app is for use with that device.
ViHealth A compatible Bluetooth pulse oximeter and a phone; support is model-specific. Can configure a compatible oximeter and transfer, analyze, and display SpO2 and pulse-rate data. Apple Health or Samsung Health integration and clinician oversight are not stated here. Check the exact oximeter model against its manufacturer’s instructions before choosing the app.

Which app fits your setup?

Apple Blood Oxygen: for supported Apple Watch owners

Apple Watch collects the reading; the iPhone Health app is where results are saved. Apple documents on-demand and background readings for Apple Watch Series 6 or later and Apple Watch Ultra, but the feature’s availability and analysis behavior vary by country and watch part number. Check Apple’s current feature availability for your exact watch and region before relying on it. Apple describes Blood Oxygen as a general fitness and wellness feature, not a medical service.

NoninConnect: for a compatible Nonin fingertip oximeter

NoninConnect pairs with NoninConnect and NoninConnect Elite Bluetooth LE pulse oximeters. Nonin describes the app as showing SpO2 and pulse rate, tracking trends, and sharing readings with Apple Health. This is a practical match if you already own one of those devices and want phone-based history. The supported phone platforms stated here are iPhone and iPad; confirm compatibility for your model and operating-system version with Nonin.

Masimo SafetyNet: for connected monitoring with a care team

SafetyNet is designed for a connected patient-and-clinician workflow. Masimo describes it as receiving readings from continuous or spot-check devices and sending trends to clinicians. It makes more sense when a clinician or monitoring program has specified the equipment and workflow than when someone simply wants to log occasional readings independently.

Masimo Professional Health: for MightySat Rx owners

The Professional Health app pairs with Masimo’s MightySat Rx fingertip oximeter and is available for iOS and Android. Alongside SpO2 and pulse rate, it can show perfusion index and optional additional metrics; Masimo also describes trend and export functions. It is the relevant choice if you have that specific device, not a generic app for any Bluetooth oximeter.

ViHealth: for a supported Bluetooth oximeter model

ViHealth can set up a compatible pulse oximeter and transfer, analyze, and display its oxygen and pulse-rate data. Because compatibility is model-specific, do not assume that an oximeter with Bluetooth will work: verify the exact model in its manufacturer instructions or support materials first. Health-platform sharing and clinician features are not established in the product information summarized here.

Can your phone camera measure blood oxygen without an oximeter?

A camera-only app is not equivalent to a clinical pulse oximeter. The five ecosystems above depend on an Apple Watch or compatible external oximeter to obtain readings; the phone serves as the display, history, or communications link. No robust, current accuracy statistic supports ranking these apps as if they were interchangeable measuring instruments.

A pulse oximeter estimates oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate. Its result can be affected by poor circulation, skin pigmentation, skin thickness, skin temperature, tobacco use, and fingernail polish, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA advises: “Do not rely only on a pulse oximeter. It also is important to keep track of your symptoms or how you feel.” Its January 2025 draft guidance proposes improved performance testing and labeling across skin pigmentation; it is a draft, not a guarantee that every device has been tested to a new standard.

Choosing and using a phone-connected pulse oximeter

  1. Match the app to the hardware. Confirm the exact watch or oximeter model is supported; Bluetooth alone does not establish compatibility.
  2. Check the phone and region. Verify operating-system support and, for Apple Blood Oxygen, whether the feature is available for your country and watch part number.
  3. Decide what kind of tracking you need. For occasional checks, look for a compatible spot-check oximeter app. For readings sent to a care team, use a clinician-directed platform such as SafetyNet only as part of the prescribed setup.
  4. Review data sharing before connecting accounts. Check the app’s permissions and privacy terms, and confirm where readings are stored or exported. NoninConnect is described as sharing with Apple Health; the other integration claims in this comparison are limited to those specifically stated above.
  5. Interpret a surprising result in context. Follow the device instructions, consider symptoms and measurement conditions, and contact a healthcare professional for advice rather than relying on an app reading alone.

What about Samsung Health?

Samsung Health can serve as a data hub for compatible accessories, but oxygen-related features depend on the phone, accessory, and software. The options compared here do not establish that any specific listed app syncs SpO2 readings to Samsung Health. Check both the oximeter maker’s compatibility information and Samsung Health’s current accessory support before buying for that purpose.
