The Retroid Pocket 5 and AYANEO Pocket MICRO are two evidence-backed candidates for a 2025 handheld emulator shortlist, but the available product information does not support a complete, tested ranking of five consoles. This guide compares what is established about those two models and explains how to choose based on your games, controls, screen, setup needs, and current seller terms.
How to choose a handheld emulator console
Start with the systems and specific games you want to play, then check reliable compatibility and performance information for those titles. A processor name, memory figure, or manufacturer product description alone does not establish that a particular game will run well.
- Screen: Compare display size, resolution, and aspect ratio with the games you plan to play. A higher resolution is not automatically a better fit if the screen is too small or the shape leaves large borders.
- Controls: Check the button layout and whether the device has analog sticks. Games designed around sticks or triggers may be awkward on a joystick-free handheld.
- Operating system and setup: Confirm the OS, the software you intend to use, and how much configuration you are willing to do.
- Storage and connectivity: Verify the exact model’s internal storage, expansion options, and wireless specifications. Do not assume every configuration is identical.
- Purchase terms: Check the price, availability, warranty, return policy, and seller for your region at the time you buy.
Two candidates with clear product evidence
The following comparison sticks to specifications and descriptions supported by the cited pages. It does not rank the devices by emulation performance, since the available sources do not establish comparable system-by-system test results.

| Retroid Pocket 5 | GoRetroid’s product page lists the manufacturer’s specifications: GoRetroid Retroid Pocket 5. The 2025 RetroFam guide characterizes it as OLED, compact, and powerful; that is the guide’s description, not a comparative test. | Check the official product page for the exact configuration. | A candidate to investigate for an all-rounder role, but the cited guide’s characterization does not prove performance across particular systems or games. |
| AYANEO Pocket MICRO | AYANEO describes a horizontal retro handheld with a 3.5-inch 960×640 IPS display. | AYANEO lists a Helio G99 processor, Android 13, Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5.2. | Its compact form and stated specifications support a retro-focused shortlist option; they do not establish reliable performance for specific emulated systems. |

Retroid Pocket 5: a shortlist option, not a proven universal pick
GoRetroid’s product page is the primary source for the Pocket 5’s specifications. RetroFam’s 2025 buyer’s guide labels it an “All-Rounder” and describes it as OLED, compact, and powerful. Treat that as an editorial assessment rather than evidence that it runs every emulator or game well. Before buying, match the device’s current configuration to the systems you care about and check the seller’s price, stock, warranty, and return terms.
AYANEO Pocket MICRO: distinguish it from Pocket MICRO Classic
AYANEO’s Pocket MICRO product page lists a 3.5-inch 960×640 IPS screen, Helio G99, Android 13, Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5.2. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent compatibility or performance results.

Pocket MICRO Classic is a separate variant
In a March 2025 announcement, AYANEO described Pocket MICRO Classic as joystick-free with a 3.5-inch 640P IPS screen. The same announcement reported preorder prices of $179 for Shadow Black and $239 for Retro Gray and Retro Gold. These are historical announcement prices, not current offers; check the product variant and live seller terms before purchasing. A joystick-free layout may also be a poor fit for games that depend on analog input.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a five-device ranking
A 2025 Android Central buyer’s guide names other Android handhelds, including the AYANEO Pocket DMG and Anbernic RG476H. Its RG476H entry reports a 4.7-inch 1280×960 120Hz display, Unisoc T820, 8GB of memory, and Android 13; those are secondary-source claims and should be checked with the manufacturer before being used as purchase specifications. The source does not provide a comparable, independently verified performance ranking across the candidates in this article.

Other 2025 guides also name devices such as the Miyoo Mini Plus and Anbernic RG405M, but the evidence here does not establish their primary specifications. ANBERNIC’s catalog shows a broad, changing lineup, not a basis for a retrospective five-product ranking. Adding three more models without adequately verified specifications and comparable performance evidence would make the list look more definitive than it is.

Before you buy
- Write down the systems and games you want to play; prioritize compatibility evidence for those titles rather than broad claims about a device.
- Compare screen dimensions and shape, then check whether the controls suit the games you have in mind.
- Confirm the exact model and variant, including operating system, storage, wireless features, and any expansion support.
- Check current pricing, regional availability, seller reputation, warranty, and return terms. Product pages and historical announcements do not establish today’s retail offer.
- Look for tests or reports that name the game or system and describe the device configuration. Do not treat a general processor specification as a substitute for that evidence.
