Which free movie and TV streaming sites suit you?
Tubi: a large on-demand catalog without a subscription
Tubi says it has thousands of movies and TV shows, requires no subscription or credit card, and describes the service as “Always Free. 100% Legal.” It identifies studio sources that include Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM. The catalog and country availability can change, so confirm access in your location through Tubi’s official service.
Recommended Free Tools
Tubi is ad-supported, so expect commercial breaks rather than an uninterrupted paid-streaming experience. Its on-demand format is useful when you want to pick a title instead of tuning in at a scheduled time.
#1 Best Overall
Pluto TV: live channels and on-demand viewing
Pluto TV says, “Pluto TV is a free, safe, and legal streaming service.” It combines live TV channels with movies and shows you can select on demand, making it the closest match here for viewers who enjoy channel surfing. Advertising supports the free service. Channel lineups and available programs can vary by location.
Plex: free catalog or your own media library
Plex offers a free, ad-supported catalog of on-demand movies and TV, as well as free live TV. Its personal-media feature is separate: with Plex Media Server, you can organize and play media you already own. That personal library is not the same as Plex’s free streaming catalog.

The Roku Channel: free viewing with regional and device differences
The Roku Channel includes free movies and TV shows and live channels. Roku’s Canada support page lists thousands of free movies and shows and 35+ live streaming channels, but those figures describe that cited Canada page, not a guarantee for every country or device. Roku says current-generation Roku devices provide access; check regional availability and compatible-device details before relying on it.

Hoopla lets users borrow movies and television “all free with your library card.” The service depends on your library participating, and each library can set borrowing limits. Check with your local library or Hoopla to see whether your card works and what limits apply. Unlike the ad-supported services above, access is tied to library membership and lending rules.

How to choose a safe way to watch movies without a subscription
- Want to pick a movie or episode? Start with an on-demand catalog such as Tubi, Plex, The Roku Channel or Hoopla, depending on what is available to you and whether you have a participating library card.
- Prefer scheduled programming? Pluto TV offers live channels; Plex and The Roku Channel also list free live TV options.
- Want to avoid a library-card requirement? Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex and The Roku Channel do not identify library borrowing as a condition of their free catalogs. Check each official service for any account or device requirements in your region.
- Want to watch on a television? Check for an official app on your existing smart TV, streaming device, phone or other supported device. Roku documents access to The Roku Channel on current-generation Roku devices; do not assume every service or feature works on every device.
- Want a specific recent release? Search the official service catalogs directly. Free catalogs rotate, and the evidence here does not establish that any particular title is currently available.
Why to avoid Putlocker clones and mirror sites
A Putlocker-branded domain is not proof that a site is authorized. Avoid clones and mirror domains; use the official app or domain for a streaming service instead. This also reduces the risk of confusing an impersonating site with a legitimate provider. “Free” legal streaming usually means watching ads or borrowing through a library relationship, not unlimited access to every movie and series.

What to check before you press play
- Country: Streaming rights and catalogs are territorial, so confirm that the service operates where you live.
- Ads and borrowing rules: Tubi, Pluto TV and Plex use advertising for their free catalogs; Hoopla access depends on participating libraries and local lending limits.
- Device compatibility: Look for the official app for your device and region. The Roku Channel’s availability and catalog can differ by location and device.
- Ratings and parental controls: Check the service’s current settings and the rating shown for a title before children watch. The cited service information does not establish uniform parental-control features across all five providers.
