Useful Apple Home devices can handle separate jobs around the house: a smart lock for entry, a thermostat for climate, a plug for a suitable lamp, a bulb for lighting, and a home hub for remote access and automations. You do not need all five. Check each product’s exact compatibility and hub requirements against your home before buying.
What devices work with Apple Home?
Apple’s Home accessory catalog includes the five products below, spanning entry, climate control, power switching, lighting, and the home hub role. Apple says Matter accessories can be added in the Home app and, once added, supported in Home, Siri, and Control Center. Support still depends on the particular model and connection type, so confirm the product’s compatibility label and any required hub.
Apple describes its platform this way: “The Home app makes it easier to control all your smart home accessories — on all your Apple devices.” (Apple Home app)

UWB is limited to select iPhone and Apple Watch models and requires a Thread-enabled Apple home hub; Aqara says a Thread-enabled Matter controller is required for the relevant ecosystem. Check that the lock fits your door and verify the exact device and hub requirements for the features you want before purchase. (Aqara Smart Lock U400)

ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium: climate control

Compatibility with Apple Home does not establish that the thermostat will work with every heating and cooling system. Check your existing HVAC equipment against ecobee’s compatibility information before buying; compatibility for a specific home installation is not established here. (ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium)
Eve Energy Matter: control a suitable plugged-in device
Eve Energy is a Matter smart plug that Eve identifies as working with Apple Home. Eve says it needs a hub that supports both Matter and Thread. It can be useful for switching a suitable plugged-in lamp or appliance through the smart-home system, but a plug does not make every appliance appropriate or safe for remote switching. Check the device’s own instructions and suitability first. (Eve Energy)

HomePod mini has a supporting role rather than replacing a lock, thermostat, plug, or light. Apple says a HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can be configured as a home hub to enable remote access and automations. Some accessory features have more specific requirements: for example, Eve Energy requires a Matter- and Thread-supporting hub, and U400’s UWB unlocking requires a Thread-enabled Apple home hub. Do not assume every accessory has identical hub needs. (Apple: Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV as a home hub)

Not necessarily. Apple’s home-hub guidance names HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as devices that can be configured to enable remote access and automations. Individual accessories may have their own hub requirements, however. Eve Energy calls for a hub supporting Matter and Thread, while the U400’s UWB unlocking requires a Thread-enabled Apple home hub. Check the needs of the accessory and feature you plan to use rather than treating HomePod mini as a universal requirement.

How to check compatibility before buying
- Confirm the exact model. Look for Apple Home or Matter compatibility for the specific product, not just a product family or a similar model. Apple’s Home accessory catalog lists supported accessories.
- Check the connection and hub. Identify whether the feature you want uses Matter, Thread, or another requirement, and confirm that your existing or planned hub supports it. Apple explains adding Matter accessories through the Apple Home Matter guidance.
- Check the physical installation. For a lock, verify door fit and model requirements; for a thermostat, check your HVAC system; for a bulb, check the base, fixture, and dimmer; for a plug, confirm the connected appliance is suitable for switching.
- Separate basic control from special features. Apple Home compatibility does not mean every advertised capability works with every iPhone, watch, hub, or home setup. Verify requirements for features such as UWB unlocking specifically.
