AI prescription readers are phone apps and web services that photograph a prescription or medicine label and convert it into text about medicine names, strengths, doses, and directions. Five such services are publicly listed as of October 2026. None of them has independent accuracy testing that we could find, and the descriptions below come from the developers’ own listings and website. Treat any output as a prompt to check your prescription, not as a reading you can act on.
Start with the safety rules
- Do not take, change, or stop a medicine based only on an app’s output. A wrong name, strength, or frequency can change treatment.
- If any name, dose, abbreviation, or instruction is unclear, ask the prescribing clinician, or have a pharmacist read the original paper prescription.
- Do not work out a dose from a medicine-information panel, and do not let an app’s interaction warning replace professional advice.
Why handwriting is a harder task than reading a label
Printed sheets, pharmacy bottle labels, and handwritten prescriptions are often grouped together, but they are different inputs. A printed sheet uses consistent typefaces. A bottle label is short and printed in a standard layout. A handwritten prescription changes with each prescriber’s hand, shorthand, and the clinic’s layout. A 2024 arXiv preprint describes extracting medicine names from handwritten prescriptions as difficult for these reasons and proposes a computer-vision and transformer-based OCR method. It is a method description, not a validation of any commercial app (arXiv preprint, 2024).
Abbreviations add a further layer. Codes such as OD, BD, and TDS, common on prescriptions in India and elsewhere in South Asia, mean once, twice, and three times daily. A reader that expands them still needs to be checked against the original prescription, because a misread abbreviation changes the dosing schedule.
The five services
These five services are listed publicly. They are not ranked, and their descriptions cover different inputs and audiences, so they are not interchangeable.

1. AI Prescription Reader (DhruvianLabs, Google Play)
The Google Play listing says the app scans handwritten or printed prescriptions and extracts medicine names, dosage, strength, frequency, and other fields. It lists 12 Indian languages and warns that extracted text may contain errors. These are developer claims, and no independent accuracy result was found (Google Play listing).
Check: whether your prescription’s language is one of the 12, and whether you can edit extracted text before you save it.
2. Prescription Reader AI: Meds (MS Production, Google Play)
This listing advertises handwriting recognition, medicine search, and prescription storage. It warns that results may contain errors and recommends verification with a qualified professional. Its feature and data-practice descriptions are self-described (Google Play listing).

What accuracy evidence exists, and what it does not show
- Pharmaceutical-label images, 2025. A paper in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Technology reports 95.6% character recognition accuracy on its own collection of pharmaceutical-label images. It measures characters on labels, not medicine names on handwritten prescriptions, and it does not test any of the five services (Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Technology, 2025).
- Character accuracy is not the same as a correct dose. A reader can get most characters right and still misread the one digit that changes a strength, such as 2.5 mg versus 25 mg. Field-level errors are the figure that matters for medicines.
- No head-to-head test. We found no independent comparison of these five services, and no published error rates by field, as of October 2026.
Test a reader on a prescription you already understand
Because no published field-level data exists for these services, you can build your own check in a few minutes.
- Pick a prescription whose medicines, strengths, and directions your pharmacist or prescriber has already confirmed with you.
- Photograph the whole sheet flat, in even light, with no dose line cut off at the edge.
- Run the app and compare the extracted text with the original, field by field.
- Log each mismatch by field. Medicine names, strengths, and frequencies matter more than wording in notes.
- Repeat with a handwritten prescription and a printed one. A reader that handles only one input is useful only for that input.
Privacy, storage, and regulatory status
A prescription photo often shows your name, the prescriber, and medicines that can reveal a diagnosis. Before uploading one, check:

US oversight of AI software depends on what a product is intended to do. The FDA says oversight of AI-enabled medical devices depends on intended use and technological characteristics, and it describes premarket routes including 510(k), De Novo, and premarket approval. The FDA’s AI-enabled device page reports over 1,600 AI-enabled medical devices authorized for marketing in the United States as of September 2026. That count does not show that any of the five services is authorized (FDA, AI-enabled medical devices).

The FDA’s guidance on device software functions gives examples of simple medication-adherence prompting and patient-specific software outputs that may fall within its oversight. It does not classify the services in this article (FDA, device software functions guidance).
The name CLAT (Computerized Labeling Assessment Tool) can cause confusion. A federal record describes it as an internal tool that helps human reviewers with drug-labeling review and flags possible deviations for human evaluation. It is not a consumer prescription reader (HHS record for CLAT).
Availability also varies by country and by store. Confirm that an app appears in your own Google Play or App Store region before planning around it.

Choosing among the five by situation
- Handwritten prescription in an Indian language: start with AI Prescription Reader and Tapd.ai, confirm your language is supported, then run the test above.
- Printed prescription with medicine search and storage: Prescription Reader AI: Meds advertises both, but its listing does not say which fields it extracts.
- Pharmacy bottle label: OCRx.ai is built for bottle scanning, but its clinician-oriented access means a general user must confirm eligibility first.
- Keeping records on your phone: TheraCareAI’s listing says records stay on the device unless exported. Verify that inside the app before storing sensitive records.
