4K x 2K is an ambiguous label for 4K-class video resolutions, not one exact pixel count. It can mean 3840 × 2160, the common 16:9 4K UHD format, or 4096 × 2160, a wider format. Check the actual pixel dimensions and supported signal modes when choosing or connecting a display.
What does 4K x 2K mean?
The label describes a family of high-resolution video modes. It does not, by itself, specify whether a device means 3840 × 2160 or 4096 × 2160. For a particular screen or connection, the exact pixel dimensions in its specifications are more useful than the phrase “4K x 2K.”
In consumer display guidance, 3840 × 2160 is commonly called 4K UHD. BenQ, for example, uses “4K x 2K” for 3840 × 2160 in guidance for the projector models covered by its page: What type of 4K HDR signal is compatible with the projector?

How do 3840 × 2160 and 4096 × 2160 differ?
They are distinct pixel dimensions, and the second is wider. Calculated from the pixel counts, 3840 × 2160 has an aspect ratio of about 1.78:1, while 4096 × 2160 is about 1.90:1. Philips documents 3840 × 2160 as a 16:9 panel resolution and lists 4096 × 2160 as a supported input format for one display; the HDMI 1.4 overview from Tektronix also lists both dimensions under the 4K x 2K label.

| Pixel dimensions | What the label may mean | Aspect ratio calculated from dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| 3840 × 2160 | Common consumer 4K UHD mode; BenQ calls this 4K x 2K for the projector models on its support page. | About 1.78:1 |
| 4096 × 2160 | A wider format also listed as 4K x 2K in some technical and device documentation. | About 1.90:1 |
These ratios are arithmetic descriptions of the pixel counts; manufacturers may use different terminology in their specifications. Philips’s format information appears in its display leaflet, dated November 2020, which notes that pre-sales specifications may change. Tektronix’s HDMI technical overview describes HDMI 1.4 support and should be read as historical interface context, not a guarantee about current devices.
Does a 4K x 2K label guarantee compatibility?
No. A resolution label does not tell you whether a particular source, port, adapter or hub, and display can carry the desired signal. Refresh rate, HDR, color depth, chroma format, interface generation, and the capabilities of every device in the connection chain can affect what works.

For example, BenQ lists 3840 × 2160 at 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60 Hz for the projector models covered by its guidance. Its stated color-depth limits also vary between 4K/60p and 4K/24p formats. Those are model-specific examples, not universal limits. VESA’s DisplayPort materials likewise show that capability depends on the interface generation and configuration.
What should you check in a device listing?
- Exact resolution: Look for 3840 × 2160, 4096 × 2160, or another explicit pixel count rather than relying on “4K x 2K.”
- Refresh rate at that resolution: Confirm the rate supported by the specific input or output, not just the display’s maximum rate in another mode.
- Whole connection path: Check the source device, port, any adapter or hub, cable requirements in the manufacturers’ specifications, and the display.
- HDR and color settings: Verify the supported HDR, color depth, and chroma format for the resolution and refresh rate you want.
If video is routed through a USB-C hub, verify that the computer’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode for video, and check the specifications of the exact computer, hub, and display. A hub’s advertised 4K output alone does not establish that the complete setup supports your target resolution and refresh rate.
