A 4K color night-vision camera can record colored footage after dark when there is enough light for its sensor to capture it. In very low light, some models add a spotlight to keep color; in complete darkness, many switch to infrared and record in black and white. “4K” describes image resolution, not how well the camera sees at night.
How a 4K color night-vision camera works
Color night vision is a combination of light-gathering hardware and image processing. A larger sensor can collect more light, while a wider-aperture lens lets more light reach that sensor. Processing then turns the captured signal into a usable image. The result depends on available illumination, so a camera advertised as having true-color night vision is not necessarily capable of showing color in a lightless scene.
Reolink says its ColorX system combines an F1.0 lens, a 1/1.8-inch image sensor and an image signal processor. The company claims its F1.0 lenses let in four times more light than traditional night-vision cameras with F2.0 lenses; that is Reolink’s manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative test. Its current CX810 product page lists 4K output and a 1/1.8-inch sensor.

Those figures describe the manufacturer’s stated conditions, not a guarantee of a particular image in every installation. Sensor size and aperture are useful clues, but they do not alone establish how much usable detail a camera will capture at a given distance.

Does color night vision work in total darkness?
Not without a source of visible light. If a scene has some ambient illumination—such as street lighting or light from a nearby building—a sensitive sensor and wide-aperture lens may preserve color. If that light falls below the camera’s color threshold, the camera may use infrared illumination instead. Infrared night vision generally produces monochrome footage.
Some cameras use a white spotlight to illuminate the scene and retain color. That can improve visibility, but the light is visible to people and animals. Check whether a claimed color mode relies on ambient light or an active white light, and whether the camera can switch automatically between color and infrared.

Lorex says its 4K W891UAD-E records color night vision with ambient lighting, then uses infrared to record black-and-white video in complete darkness. Its product description makes clear why “color night vision” should not be read as color in zero-light conditions: Lorex W891UAD-E specifications.

What to check before choosing a camera
- How color is achieved: Look for whether the specification requires ambient light, a white spotlight or another light source. “0 lux with IR” indicates operation with infrared, not color recording in darkness.
- Resolution and frame rate: 4K output can preserve more spatial detail than lower resolutions, but the cited product information does not establish a shared frame-rate comparison across these examples. Check the exact model’s frame-rate specification if smooth motion matters.
- Power and connection: The Reolink CX810 is a PoE camera. Confirm that a wired Ethernet and power setup suits the installation; the examples here do not establish a like-for-like comparison of Wi-Fi or battery-powered alternatives.
- Coverage and weather rating: Check the specific model’s viewing angle, rated operating conditions and weather protection for the intended mounting location. The cited specifications do not provide a consistent basis for comparing these details.

Why real-world night footage may look different
A low-light rating is not a promise that a face, license plate or moving subject will be clearly identifiable at a chosen distance. Glare, a bright light source in the frame, motion, camera placement and video compression can all reduce usable detail. A high-resolution image may also show more pixels without making a dim or blurred subject easier to identify.

Before relying on a camera for a particular scene, consider where light falls, whether the camera will use a spotlight or infrared, and what distance and movement it needs to capture. Manufacturer figures can help narrow options, but the cited information does not include independent lab testing or hands-on comparisons.
