This guide uses a practical definition of “best”: a mix of well-reviewed films and worthwhile series, organized by what you may want to watch and how much time you have. It is not a verified list of 42 titles, however: the TechYorker page named in the query could not be inspected, and the available sources do not substantiate its entries or order. Rather than invent a watchlist, this guide explains how to choose confidently and what to check before pressing play.
What “best” means for a Prime Video watchlist
There is no single objective ranking of the best films and shows. Rotten Tomatoes’ August 2026 movie guide selected 100 Certified Fresh films using Tomatometer scores and its critics-review threshold. Its page listed Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023) at 99% Tomatometer and 90% Popcornmeter; those are ratings displayed by Rotten Tomatoes at the time, not a universal measure of quality or a guarantee that the film is currently included with Prime Video. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide
For a broader mix, TV Guide says its August 14, 2026 selection weighs new releases, Prime Video originals, critics’ favorites, underrated films, classics, and diverse voices, while excluding titles that require a separate rental or purchase fee. That is a useful standard for a “watch today” list, but the guide’s selection still needs a current availability check for your location. TV Guide’s Prime Video movie list

Choose by format, mood, and time available
Start with the kind of viewing session you want. A film gives you a contained story and a more predictable time commitment; a series is better when you want recurring characters or a longer world to explore. Recommendation guides commonly sort films and shows by genre and mood, and series picks are more useful when accompanied by premise and season context. GamesRadar+’s 2026 guide, for example, states that it covers 25 shows and groups suggestions by genre. GamesRadar+’s Prime Video series guide

- For a particular mood: Narrow by genre and tone—such as comedy, action, science fiction, or drama—then read the synopsis to make sure the premise suits you.

Check whether the title is actually included
Prime Video listings can have different access labels, and the storefront varies by country. Amazon’s official storefront displays labels such as “Watch with a free Prime trial” and “Watch for free,” alongside other types of listings. A title appearing in a recommendation guide does not establish that it is included in your subscription, free in your territory, or available today. Amazon’s Prime Video storefront
- Open the title’s page in Prime Video while signed in from the country where you plan to watch.
- Read the access label and price shown for that specific title. Distinguish subscription-included or free viewing from a rental or purchase that costs extra.
- Check the listing for the number of seasons, episodes, and any other details that affect your viewing plan.
- Recheck close to viewing time if access matters: catalog availability and storefront labels can change.
Treat ratings and series details as dated information
Ratings are snapshots from a particular service and date, not a promise that you will enjoy a title. Likewise, season counts and completion status can change. GamesRadar+’s 2026 guide reports that The Boys has five seasons and describes its fifth as the final installment; it lists four released seasons of Reacher, with a fifth commissioned; it describes Fallout as having two seasons, with a third on the way; and it reports that The Expanse has six seasons and 62 episodes. Those are guide-reported details, not a live check of the current catalog or your region. Confirm the series page before choosing a binge.

Why this page does not invent a list of 42 titles
The exact-title TechYorker page appeared in search results as published May 10, 2026, but was unavailable for inspection. Its 42 selections and their order therefore cannot be verified from the sources available here. Other recommendation guides offer useful selection methods, but they do not establish a reliable set of 42 titles that are all currently watchable for every reader. A list that guessed at entries or labeled them all “included with Prime” would risk sending you to unavailable titles or unexpected charges.

For a dependable choice, use current title pages to confirm access, region, season details, and age or content information. If a guide supplies ratings or episode counts, treat them as dated context rather than a substitute for those checks.
