There is no guaranteed VPN for watching BBC iPlayer outside the UK. The BBC’s Terms of Use list using a VPN to watch iPlayer abroad as an example of accessing content a user is not allowed to access. TechRadar’s July 16, 2026 review reported successful tests with five VPN providers, but that is a dated snapshot—not permission under BBC terms or a promise of future access.
TechRadar ranked NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), and Proton VPN among the providers covered here. Its NordVPN recommendation directly conflicts with NordVPN Support, which says BBC iPlayer cannot be watched while connected to NordVPN. Read the BBC restriction first, then treat the provider list as a comparison of reviewer findings rather than a reliable way around that restriction.
What the BBC says about using a VPN abroad
The BBC Terms of Use, dated June 30, 2017, state in section 7(a): “Accessing content from outside the UK that you aren’t allowed to, or helping others do the same. For example: using a VPN service so you can watch BBC iPlayer when you’re outside the UK”. That is a stated restriction, not an endorsement of VPN access from overseas. Check the BBC’s current terms before relying on this dated document.

The same terms say a TV Licence is needed to watch or record live TV, or to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer, when in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man. A UK TV Licence does not itself grant permission to access iPlayer from abroad. A VPN subscription also does not include a BBC account, subscription, or licence.

What the 2026 VPN comparison can—and cannot—tell you
TechRadar’s review, last updated July 16, 2026, ranked five providers after testing iPlayer on a Lenovo laptop and iPhone 13. Reviewers connected to the closest UK server and tried another if the first connection failed. These are TechRadar’s results, not independent tests for this article, and access can change as BBC detection and provider services change.
The clearest illustration of that uncertainty is NordVPN: TechRadar ranked it first and reported successful testing, while NordVPN Support says BBC services, including iPlayer, cannot be watched while connected to NordVPN. Its support page suggests choosing a UK server and trying another server or clearing the cache, but those steps do not resolve the contradiction or guarantee access.

Four VPNs in TechRadar’s July 2026 ranking
| Provider | TechRadar rank and reported result | UK servers or locations reported | Reader-relevant notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 1st; TechRadar reported a successful test, but NordVPN Support says BBC iPlayer cannot be watched while connected. | 440 servers in four locations, per TechRadar’s July 16, 2026 review. | Do not treat the review result as a guarantee; the provider’s support guidance conflicts with it. |
| ExpressVPN | 3rd; TechRadar described its app experience favorably. | Four UK locations; server count not stated by TechRadar. | The review noted apps for Apple TV and Fire TV Stick. Rank and app availability do not ensure iPlayer access. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | 4th. | Three UK locations; server count not stated by TechRadar. | TechRadar noted broad device compatibility and unlimited simultaneous connections. |
| Proton VPN | 5th; TechRadar reported a successful stream after changing servers when its initial Manchester connection produced grainy picture quality. | 36 servers in two UK locations, per TechRadar’s July 16, 2026 review. | TechRadar said its free tier was not ideal for streaming. |
The server figures and locations are review-era details, not permanent specifications. TechRadar’s July 2026 review also recorded a 1,521 Mbps WireGuard result for Proton VPN and a 10% test-session slowdown for NordVPN. Those are reviewer-specific results under its test conditions—not predictions of your connection speed or evidence that a stream will work.

- Weigh conflicting evidence: NordVPN’s first-place review position should be read alongside its own support page saying iPlayer cannot be watched on its service.
- Match the app to your device: A provider app for your phone, computer, TV, or streaming device is usually the simplest setup. TechRadar specifically noted Apple TV and Fire TV Stick app availability for ExpressVPN; verify current compatibility for your exact device and provider.
- Consider server choice, not just the count: TechRadar’s test account describes switching UK servers when a connection failed or picture quality suffered. More listed servers do not establish dependable iPlayer access.
- Check current plan details directly: Prices, renewal terms, simultaneous-device limits, apps, and server networks can change. The cited review is not a current-offer price list.
Set up a compatible device or consider a router
For a device with a supported VPN app, use the provider’s current installation instructions and confirm that your device and plan are compatible.

If an app cannot be installed on a particular TV or streaming device, a VPN-configured router is an optional alternative—not a requirement for everyone. TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 guide discusses Android TV app installation and router configuration as possible approaches. A VPN-compatible travel router may suit some setups, but compatibility depends on the VPN service, router, and device; the guide does not verify a specific model.
