Yes—several video doorbells can save recordings without a required monthly plan. The important difference is how they store footage: some use a microSD card, while others offer a short free event history alongside optional local storage. For continuous recording, check the power requirement before you buy.
Here are four options, with their storage methods and the trade-offs that matter if you want to review footage in an app without paying for a cloud subscription.
How the four doorbells compare
| Model | No-subscription recording | Power and continuous recording | Notable consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Tapo D225 | Local microSD storage up to 512 GB; card sold separately. Tapo Care cloud storage is optional and paid. | Battery or hardwired. The manufacturer says 24/7 recording is available when hardwired. | Its 24/7 mode does not support using an existing chime. |
| eufy Video Doorbell E340 | Manufacturer describes local storage without a subscription fee; current capacity and card-inclusion details are not established here. | Power and continuous-recording details are not stated in the cited material. | Two cameras include a downward-facing view of the doorstep. |
| Reolink Doorbell (Battery) | TechRadar reports internal microSD recording, with cloud storage optional. | Battery-powered; continuous-recording support is not established in the cited coverage. | TechRadar notes it lacks a second camera aimed at packages. |
| Aqara Video Doorbell G4 | Up to seven days of free event clips; optional local microSD storage in the indoor chime, with card sold separately. | Battery or wired. Local 24/7 recording requires wired power. | HomeKit Secure Video is also supported and may involve separate Apple service requirements. |
These are comparison candidates, not a lab-tested ranking. Current prices, stock, and retailer bundles are not established in the cited sources.
1. TP-Link Tapo D225: best fit for wired continuous recording
The D225 records to a separately purchased microSD card, with support for cards up to 512 GB. TP-Link lists 2K QHD video, a 180-degree diagonal field of view, and AI detection for people, pets, vehicles, and packages. Its optional Tapo Care service adds cloud storage; it is not required for local recording. See TP-Link’s Tapo D225 specifications.

- Wide 166° Field Of View For Video Doorbell & f/2.5 Aperture: Covers your front porch with no blind spots; CMOS sensor and f/2.5 aperture deliver moderate depth of field with soft background blur and crisp facial details for fast visitor recognition
- Reliable 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi & 1.2T AI Chip With Fast, Stable Response: This wireless video doorbell supports only 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi for improved signal penetration and range; high‑speed AI chip processes thousands of operations per second for instant alerts and enhanced security
- No Subscription Required & Full Access to Essential Features With Zero Hidden Costs: Get real-time alerts, two-way audio, human detection, and video playback with this doorbell camera, with no subscription required; all essential features stay free, optional subscription plans are available for advanced services such as cloud storage and enhanced AI event classification
- HDR Night Vision With Invisible 940 nm Infrared: HDR tech and high-sensitivity sensor in this doorbell camera adjust to all lighting conditions; invisible 940 nm IR fill light offers clear night vision up to 10 meters without red glow for discreet, around-the-clock security
- Battery Life & Usage Tips for Your Doorbell Camera: In laboratory conditions, the battery lasts up to 60 days with 30 daily motion activations and 10-second video recordings; actual performance may vary based on usage and environment; extend battery life by adjusting motion sensitivity, narrowing detection zones, or avoiding high-traffic areas. (Powered by a built-in, non-removable rechargeable battery for wire-free operation.)
Choose it if continuous capture is more important than keeping an existing chime. TP-Link says 24/7 recording works in hardwired mode, but that mode does not support an existing chime. Battery power is also supported, but the cited specifications do not establish 24/7 recording on battery.
2. eufy Video Doorbell E340: useful for seeing packages at the doorstep
The E340 has a front-facing camera for people and a second, downward-facing camera aimed at the floor near the door. That extra angle can help show a delivery that falls below the main camera’s view. Eufy describes local storage and use without subscription fees. Its cited page does not establish the current storage capacity, whether a card is included, or the exact bundles currently offered, so confirm those details for the specific listing. See eufy’s E340 product page.

3. Reolink Doorbell (Battery): a wireless local-recording option
TechRadar’s February 13, 2026 coverage describes this 2K battery model as recording to microSD, with Reolink cloud storage optional. It is a candidate if you want a battery-powered model with local recordings, but the cited article does not establish continuous-recording support. It also notes that the doorbell lacks a second camera dedicated to the package area. Read TechRadar’s Reolink coverage.

4. Aqara Video Doorbell G4: free event history with storage in the indoor chime
Aqara describes up to seven days of free event clips, plus optional local microSD recording in the indoor chime. The chime supports cards up to 512 GB, but the card is not included. Aqara lists 1080p video, a 162-degree field of view, and operation with six AA batteries or wired power. Its 24/7 local recording feature requires wired power. Check Aqara’s G4 specifications.
The G4 supports HomeKit Secure Video, an Apple ecosystem feature distinct from Aqara’s free event clips and local card storage. Apple’s service requirements may apply to that feature; do not assume it is included just because Aqara’s event history is free.

What to check before choosing
- Event clips or continuous recording: If you need footage between motion events, confirm that the model supports 24/7 recording and check its power requirements. The D225 and G4 specify wired power for their continuous-recording modes.
- Storage location and card cost: A no-subscription setup may still require buying a compatible microSD card. The D225 stores locally in the doorbell; the G4 stores on a card in its indoor chime.
- View of deliveries: The E340’s downward-facing camera is designed to cover the doorstep. Reolink’s battery model, according to TechRadar, does not have a second package-facing camera.
- Free features versus paid cloud: Separate local recording and free event history from optional cloud services. A free recording route does not mean every feature or storage method is free.
- Power and installation: Battery operation can avoid wiring, while wired power enables continuous recording on the D225 and G4. Check the model’s installation requirements against your existing wiring and chime.
- Smart-home compatibility: If you rely on a particular ecosystem, confirm compatibility and any associated service requirements for the exact model and feature you plan to use.
