A USB connection can carry both power and data, so the risk is not that an ordinary cable becomes infected. It is that a cable connects your device to an untrusted charging station or computer that can attempt to access it. NIST identifies malicious charging stations and USB-installed malicious apps as threats, but its guidance does not define four dangerous types of USB cable. The four scenarios below describe risky connection paths—not a formal cable classification.

Four USB connection scenarios that can expose a device

1. Plugging into a public charging station

A public USB station may be more than a source of power. NIST describes a malicious charging station as a physical-access threat: its operator could attempt to exploit the connected device or install malware over the connection. NIST advises avoiding public charging stations that may house malicious chargers. NIST Mobile Threat Catalogue: Malicious Charging Station

2. Connecting to a USB port on an infected computer

A computer’s USB port can provide a data connection as well as power. NIST describes potentially malicious applications installed over USB from an infected computer. When you only need to charge, use a wall socket charger rather than plugging into a computer you do not trust. NIST Mobile Threat Catalogue: Malicious Applications Installed via USB

3. Accepting a trust or access prompt from an unknown connection

A prompt asking whether to trust a connected computer or allow access is a decision point, not a formality. If you do not know and trust the system or charging station, decline. NIST’s advice is to avoid accepting trust prompts from untrusted systems; its page also includes platform-specific examples that should not be treated as universal instructions for every current phone.

4. Leaving USB debugging enabled when you do not need it

USB debugging is a developer feature that can permit communication with a connected computer. NIST specifically recommends turning off Android USB debugging when it is not needed. The exact setting location and behavior can vary by Android version and device maker, so consult your phone’s current settings or manufacturer guidance rather than relying on an outdated menu path.

What a charge-only cable changes

A charge-only cable is designed to carry power without carrying data. Plugable says its charge-only USB-C cables have their data lines removed: they can charge a device, but cannot sync data, and the connected host cannot see the device through that cable. This may reduce exposure when charging from a USB port you cannot avoid, but it is not a guarantee against every device or charging-related threat.

Safer ways to charge away from home

  • Prefer your own wall adapter. Plug the adapter into an electrical outlet, then charge with your cable. This avoids using an unknown public USB data port.
  • Use a battery pack you control. NIST and Plugable both point to a personal power source as an alternative to an unknown charging station or USB port.
  • If you must use a USB port, consider a charge-only cable. It prevents data transfer through that cable, but you will not be able to sync or otherwise use its data connection.
  • Decline unexpected trust or access prompts. Do not grant access to a system you do not recognize and trust.
  • Keep debugging disabled unless you need it. On Android, NIST recommends switching USB debugging off when it is not in use.

Keep cable advice in perspective

USB security is broader than charging cables. NIST’s September 2025 publication on portable storage media discusses cybersecurity risks and procedural, physical, and technical controls in operational technology environments; it concerns portable storage such as USB flash drives, not evidence of widespread consumer charging-cable attacks. For mobile-device security more generally, NIST SP 800-124 Rev. 2 covers security concerns, mitigations, and device-management practices. It provides useful context, but does not establish a cable-specific threat rate. No attributable statistic in the cited guidance quantifies how often consumer charging stations or cables are malicious, so a claim that they are a person’s “biggest” security risk would go beyond the evidence. NIST SP 800-124 Rev. 2

Keep your device software current and use sensible connection practices; no single cable or accessory prevents every threat.
