Smart bulbs are worth skipping if you do not need app-based control, schedules, dimming, or color options: you would pay more and take on connected-device upkeep for features you may not use. The main drawbacks are higher upfront cost, app and update maintenance, standby electricity, and compatibility or failure hassles. None applies equally to every bulb or household, so check the exact product and your existing setup before deciding.
What you gain—and give up—by skipping smart bulbs
Smart-lighting products can offer remote control, dimming, adjustable white tones, color changes, scenes, and schedules, though features vary by product. ENERGY STAR describes these as available smart-lighting functions, not a guarantee that every bulb includes them. If you skip smart bulbs, you give up the functions you would actually use; if you rarely adjust lights beyond the wall switch, those features may not justify the added cost and setup.

Four reasons you might skip smart bulbs
1. The extra features raise the upfront cost
ENERGY STAR notes that smart-lighting features vary and that more features raise the initial cost. If your priority is simply reliable, efficient light, a standard LED avoids paying for connected controls you may not need. There is no current, model-specific price comparison established here, so compare the exact products you are considering rather than relying on older price examples.

If you want to control several regular bulbs together, a smart switch may be an alternative. Consumer Reports’ article, published in 2019, says a switch may be more affordable when several fixtures are involved, but its price comparisons are historical, not current retail guidance. It also notes installation may be more involved and could require an electrician. Wiring and legal requirements vary by location; use an appropriately qualified professional where needed. 2. Connected controls add upkeep
Requirements vary: some smart devices can work without internet, while others may require an internet connection, an app, or an account. Check the specific bulb’s operating requirements before buying; “smart” does not automatically mean it needs cloud access or an account. GOV.UK explains these differences in its smart-device guidance.

Connected products can also need software updates and continuing manufacturer support. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises installing security updates and choosing devices that manufacturers continue to support; unsupported products may become easier to compromise or may stop working as intended. This is general smart-device advice, not evidence that smart bulbs are inherently unsafe. The practical trade-off is a little more account, app, and update maintenance than a basic bulb. 3. “Off” may still use standby electricity
Most smart lighting products need standby power to remain controllable by an app or remote, according to the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. So a bulb that appears off in the app may still draw electricity. The department advises checking standby consumption and suggests looking for 0.5 W or less. Treat that as consumer guidance, not a measured value for every model; check the product’s own specification. 4. Compatibility and failure planning can be a hassle
Before buying, check that the bulb works with your router, phone or other control devices, and any existing dimmer or lighting controls. Some systems also require a separate hub or bridge; others do not. Confirm what hardware is included and required for the exact product. The Australian government’s lighting guidance and Electrical Safety First’s smart-home advice both emphasize checking compatibility.
Also ask what happens if the app, network, hub, or smart system fails: can someone still turn on the light manually? Electrical Safety First recommends planning for system failure and checking that manual lighting remains available. If losing app control would leave a room without a usable light, that dependency may outweigh the convenience.

When a standard LED is the better fit
If you mainly want efficient illumination, a standard LED is the simpler alternative. The Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water says LEDs use about 75% less energy than halogen bulbs and last 5 to 10 times longer. Those figures describe LEDs generally, not extra savings specific to smart bulbs, and the page does not state a publication year. Check the fitting type and dimmer compatibility for the particular bulb before replacing an existing lamp.
