Antarctica, Nepal’s Everest region, Death Valley National Park and Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression offer four very different kinds of extreme travel: polar remoteness, high altitude, desert heat and exposed volcanic terrain. This is an editorial selection, not an official ranking. The right choice depends less on dramatic scenery than on the activity you plan to do, the season, access and permits, and the available medical and evacuation support.
1. Antarctica: a remote polar expedition
What makes it extreme
Most visitors reach Antarctica by sea. The hazards include unpredictable weather, glaciers and avalanches, while emergency services and tourism infrastructure are limited. A guided voyage can organize logistics, but it cannot remove the environmental risks or guarantee rescue.
When to go and how to plan
UK travel advice describes Antarctica as inaccessible in winter, from March to October. Summer landings, from November to February, can still be difficult because of westerly winds and limited sheltered anchorage. These are UK travel-advice statements; check the current advice relevant to your nationality and departure route.
UK permit rules apply to British expeditions, British-flagged vessels and UK-registered aircraft entering Antarctica. Under that guidance, passengers on an organized tour are unlikely to need to apply personally because the operator usually arranges the permit; confirm that directly with the operator. UK guidance recommends applying at least four months ahead for a new or unusual application, and at least two months ahead for a repeat summer-activity application. These deadlines are specific to the UK rules, not universal requirements.

UK travel advice recommends considering an operator that belongs to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), whose members follow operational and environmental safety codes. The U.S. State Department also describes emergency services as limited and encourages medical-evacuation insurance. Confirm what your policy covers and how evacuation would work for the voyage you are considering.
2. Nepal’s Everest region: high-altitude trekking or climbing
Choose the activity before judging the challenge
An Everest Base Camp trek and an Everest summit expedition are not interchangeable adventures. The region includes glaciers, icefalls and deep valleys, as well as Sherpa communities. The Nepal Tourism Board describes both Base Camp trekking and the option of climbing the mountain; the latter is a mountaineering expedition, not simply a more strenuous version of the trek.

Allow time for acclimatization
For a safe round-trip Everest Base Camp trek from Lukla, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises allowing 12–14 days. That is the government’s stated guidance, not a universal itinerary for every traveler. It warns that shorter schedules may not provide enough time to acclimatize. Check a trekking provider’s credentials and experience, and confirm that insurance covers the planned altitude, altitude sickness and emergency evacuation.
Check current permits and seasons
The Nepal Tourism Board says the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation issues permits for bigger mountains. It lists spring (March–May), summer (June–August), autumn (September–November) and winter (December–February) as climbing seasons. Permit rules and conditions depend on the selected activity, so verify current requirements before booking.

3. Death Valley National Park: heat and backcountry exposure
Heat can make the season decisive
The U.S. National Park Service says summer temperatures in Death Valley can reach 130°F (54°C), with nighttime temperatures up to 90°F (32°C). NPS advises against hiking in the valley and lower elevations when it is hot, and recommends checking the forecast and park alerts. It advises visitors to drink at least one gallon of water a day; treat that as NPS guidance, not an individualized medical prescription. If conditions are dangerously hot, avoid the hike rather than relying on extra water or equipment to make it safe.
Backcountry permits do not guarantee rescue
Overnight stays on the Cottonwood-Marble Canyon Hiking Loop require a year-round wilderness permit, according to Recreation.gov. The agency warns that wilderness travel is inherently dangerous, cell reception is limited or absent in much of the park, and rescue is not certain. Check current permit availability, park alerts and route conditions before setting out. Carrying enough water is essential preparation, but it does not offset hazardous heat or exposure.

4. Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression: volcanic terrain and security risks
Expect demanding logistics
Visit Ethiopia describes the Danakil Depression as largely below sea level, with salt flats and active volcanic features. Its page reports an “average daily maximum of 41°C,” but gives no publication year for that figure. The tourism authority says routes to Dallol and Do Dom/Erta Ale require 4×4 vehicles and navigation skills. It recommends an experienced operator with multiple vehicles and staff familiar with the Afar area; for the Erta Ale hike, it advises starting at dusk and returning early to avoid the hottest hours.
Make security a go/no-go check
Heat and difficult terrain are not the only concerns. Government of Canada advice reports that armed groups have previously targeted foreigners in the Danakil Depression. It advises travelers who decide to go to hire an experienced guide from a reputable company escorted by official security forces. The same advice warns of basic facilities and very limited medical services. Consult your own government’s current regional advisory immediately before making plans; if its guidance makes the trip inappropriate, the scenery is not a reason to proceed.

How to compare these destinations for your trip
Compare the specific itinerary and support arrangements, not just the headline destination. A guided Antarctic voyage differs from an independent expedition, and an Everest Base Camp trek differs fundamentally from a summit attempt.

There is no universal danger score or single best choice among these four. Decide what kind of challenge you want, then assess the season, access, permits, route conditions, operator and guide qualifications, medical support, evacuation arrangements and security for the actual trip.
