You can reduce Google TV home-screen clutter by limiting streaming-service recommendations, tuning content preferences, turning off autoplay previews where available, or switching to Apps-only mode. Apps-only mode makes the biggest change, but it does not remove every sponsored tile—and it disables some Google TV features.

1. Limit recommendations to services you use

Google TV can use your selected streaming services to shape its recommendations. To see more suggestions from services you actually subscribe to, remove services you do not use from the selected-services list. Google recommends selecting only services you subscribe to; adding more services can bring more recommendations from them. The exact settings labels can differ by device, so look for the streaming-services or services-preferences controls in Google TV settings. Google’s guide to recommendations and streaming services explains how service selection affects what appears.

2. Tune content preferences

Use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down controls on suggested titles to tell Google TV what you like or want to see less of. Google describes content preferences as a way to communicate what you like to watch. This can tune the recommendation mix, but it does not guarantee a particular result or remove promotions.

3. Turn off autoplay previews if your device offers the control

Some Google TV devices provide an autoplay-preview setting that can stop previews from playing as you browse. Menu wording and availability are not confirmed as consistent across all Google TV models and software versions. Check your profile settings for an autoplay-previews toggle; if it is absent, your device may not offer that control in the same place. Do not treat Android TV menu instructions as universal Google TV steps: the platforms have related but distinct settings. Google’s Android TV preview guidance applies to Android TV, not every Google TV interface.

4. Use Apps-only mode for the largest change

Apps-only mode hides personalized recommendations from the home screen and presents installed apps instead. Google’s route is Settings > Accounts & Sign In > your profile > Apps only mode, then turn the mode on. Depending on the device, the settings area may be called “Accounts & Profiles,” or you may need to open “All settings” first; follow the equivalent profile path. Google TV Help confirms that personalized home-screen recommendations are not shown in this mode.

What Apps-only mode keeps—and what it gives up

  • Installed apps remain available to open.
  • Personalized recommendations are hidden, but sponsored content and teasers for popular movies and shows may still appear. Apps-only mode is not a guarantee of an ad-free screen.
  • Google lists Search, Google Assistant, Watchlist, and rating actions among the features unavailable in this mode.

Which approach should you choose?

Approach What changes Tradeoff
Adjust services, preferences, and previews Tunes recommendations and, where available, stops autoplay previews while retaining the recommendation layout. Recommendations and promotional content can remain; the preview control may not exist on every device.
Apps-only mode Replaces personalized recommendations with an installed-apps-focused screen. Search, Assistant, Watchlist, and rating actions are unavailable, and sponsored content or teasers may still appear.

Google says recommendations can also reflect prior activity, region, popularity, editorial choices, contractual obligations, and device type. That is why changing services or preferences can shape the home screen without fully controlling everything it displays. For a cleaner but still recommendation-led layout, start with service selection and content preferences. Choose Apps-only mode if you prefer an app-launcher-style screen and can do without its disabled features.
