If screenshots are filling your Google Photos account, the most precise fix is to stop backing up the phone’s Screenshots folder while leaving camera backup on. In Google Photos for Android, open Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders, then switch off Screenshots. Review the other controls below to stop unwanted app images, all uploads, cellular transfers, or excessive file sizes.

1. Turn off backup for the Screenshots folder

This setting targets screenshots without disabling your camera uploads. It is the right choice when you want new photos and videos from the camera to remain backed up but do not want screen captures stored online.

  1. Open Google Photos on your Android phone.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial, then open Photos settings.
  3. Tap Backup.
  4. Choose Back up device folders.
  5. Switch off Screenshots.

Google’s device-folder control covers folders created by the phone and by other apps. Turning off Screenshots prevents future items in that folder from being uploaded; it does not remove screenshots that are already in your Google Photos library.

2. Disable backup for unnecessary app folders

Messaging and utility apps can create their own image folders. If those files are disposable or already stored elsewhere, disable their folders from the same screen:

  1. Return to Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders.
  2. Review the list of available folders.
  3. Switch off folders such as WhatsApp, Google Chat, Downloads, or any other app folder you do not need in the cloud.

Folder selection determines what Google Photos uploads. It does not delete the local files from your phone, and it does not erase cloud copies that were uploaded earlier.

3. Turn off the global Backup switch

Use the main Backup switch only when you want Google Photos to upload nothing new from that device. This is broader than changing individual folders: it stops camera images, screenshots, downloads, and app media from being backed up.

  1. Open Google Photos → profile picture or initial → Photos settings → Backup.
  2. Turn off the main Backup switch.
  3. If you are trying to keep a local copy from being removed during device-management actions, leave Backup off after making the change.

Disabling global Backup is a preventive step, not a cleanup command. Photos and videos already in your Google Account remain there until you manage or delete them separately.

4. Adjust quality and mobile-data behavior

Choose a backup quality

In Photos settings → Backup, open Backup quality. Storage saver uses less account storage when reduced file size is acceptable. Original quality keeps the full quality and therefore uses more storage.

Storage saver is not a screenshot filter: it changes how eligible files are stored, while folder settings decide whether screenshots are uploaded at all. Google notes that Storage saver does not compress every file. Existing items may also require a separate Recover storage action; changing the quality option alone does not retroactively reduce every stored file.

Stop uploads over cellular data

In the Backup settings, turn off any option that allows backup over mobile data if your goal is to prevent cellular uploads. This controls when uploads can occur, not which folders are selected and not whether files remain in your cloud library. A screenshot folder can still upload over Wi-Fi unless its folder backup is disabled.

What each control changes

Control Scope Storage effect Quality impact Cellular-data effect
Screenshots folder Stops uploads from the Screenshots folder while other selected folders can continue Prevents future screenshot files from using account storage None None by itself
Other device folders Stops uploads from selected app or device folders Prevents future files in those folders from using account storage None None by itself
Global Backup Stops all new Photos uploads from that phone Prevents all future uploads from that device None Stops uploads regardless of connection type
Storage saver Applies to backed-up items rather than selecting folders Can reduce storage used by eligible files May reduce file quality; some files are not compressed None
Mobile-data backup option Controls whether uploads use cellular data Does not remove files or change cloud retention None Restricts uploads over mobile data only

Why the account can still be full after you change these settings

Google Account storage is shared across Google services, including Google Photos. Google’s current Android Help guidance provides 15 GB at no charge. Turning off a backup source prevents future uploads but does not reclaim space occupied by existing screenshots or other media.

To recover space, decide separately what to do with items already online: delete unwanted screenshots and then follow Google Photos’ deletion prompts, or use the available storage-management tools such as Recover storage where applicable. Also check whether Gmail or Drive content is consuming the shared quota. If the account has used all available storage, Google advises either cleaning up storage or buying more storage.

Common mistakes and safer checks

  • Changing the wrong menu: Confirm that you are in Photos settings → Backup. Do not use a phone gallery’s delete command when you only intend to stop cloud uploads.
  • Expecting old screenshots to disappear: Folder switches affect future uploads. Previously backed-up items need a separate cloud-cleanup decision.
  • Disabling mobile data instead of the folder: This may stop cellular transfers but still allows screenshots to upload over Wi-Fi.
  • Assuming Storage saver blocks screenshots: It changes storage efficiency, not folder eligibility.
  • Different labels on different phones: Android manufacturers and Google Photos versions can vary slightly. Look for the device-folder backup list and verify the folder name before changing it.

A practical setup for most people

For a balance between convenience and storage control, leave the main Backup switch on, keep the camera folder enabled, turn off Screenshots and unneeded app folders, select Storage saver if its quality trade-off suits you, and disable mobile-data backup if cellular usage matters. Choose global Backup off only when no new media from the phone should reach Google Photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off Screenshots delete screenshots from my phone?

No. The setting controls future Google Photos uploads from that folder. Local screenshots remain on the device, and screenshots already backed up remain in your Google Photos library until you manage them separately.

Can I keep camera backup while blocking screenshots?

Yes. Leave the camera folder enabled and switch off only Screenshots under Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders.
