You can replace several Google apps on an Android phone without paying, but “free” does not always mean full-featured or cloud-backed. Four practical candidates are Proton Mail for email, Brave for browsing, HERE WeGo for navigation, and Fossify Gallery for photos. They cover different needs, and each comes with a trade-off—especially around storage, traffic data, and photo backup. The sources reviewed identify these as alternatives, not as one author’s verified personal routine.
Choose replacements one app at a time
Changing the apps you open every day is different from removing Google components from Android. TechPP’s guide says common default apps can be disabled or replaced without rooting while Google Play Services remains; the exact options depend on the phone maker, Android version, and app. Start by installing a replacement and setting it as the default where Android offers that control. Do not assume this removes Google Play Services or every Google integration.
The four options below are candidates supported by recent app guides, not proof that every user should switch or that one person uses all four. Free-plan terms can change, so check the app’s current listing and plan details before moving data or relying on a particular allowance.

Proton Mail is a free-tier option for people who want an email service alternative to Gmail. Android Authority describes its free plan as limited, so check whether its current storage and features meet your needs before moving your primary address. A free account is not automatically equivalent to Gmail’s storage, integrations, or account ecosystem.

Before switching, consider whether you want a new email address or simply a different Android client for existing accounts. Thunderbird is another candidate if your goal is to manage mail from multiple providers in one app; Android Authority says it supports IMAP and POP3 mail servers. The right choice depends on whether you are changing email services or changing the app used to access mail.
2. Chrome alternative: Brave
Brave is Android Authority’s privacy-focused browser candidate. The guide notes it is based on Chromium, which can make bookmark transfer familiar to people coming from Chrome. That does not mean every Chrome feature, Google account integration, or sync behavior will carry over unchanged. Review the browser’s current sync and privacy settings, and confirm your bookmarks and passwords are available before making it your only browser.

3. Google Maps alternative: HERE WeGo
TechPP lists HERE WeGo as a Google Maps alternative. Navigation is especially sensitive to the places and conditions you rely on: traffic information, business listings, reviews, transit coverage, and offline maps can vary by location and app version. Check your common routes and destinations in the replacement before depending on it for a trip.

For outdoor navigation, Android Authority discusses OsmAnd as an alternative with activity-specific maps and GPX support. Its guide also notes limitations: it lacks traffic overlays and useful restaurant and attraction information, and Android Auto support on the Play Store is paid. Those trade-offs make it a more plausible fit for hiking or cycling than for someone who depends on live traffic and place discovery.

4. Google Photos alternative: Fossify Gallery
Fossify Gallery is described by TechPP as an offline-first gallery focused on photos stored on the phone. That makes it a candidate for viewing and organizing local images, not a drop-in replacement for Google Photos cloud backup. If your pictures exist only in Google Photos, export or otherwise migrate them before relying on a local gallery; otherwise, they may not be present on the device for Fossify Gallery to show.
Android Authority separately describes Lavender Photos as a free open-source photo viewer with optional Immich backup support. A viewer and a backup service are separate jobs: decide where your originals will live, how they will be backed up, and how you will access them from another device. Ente Photos is another service mentioned in the privacy-focused roundup, but that guide characterizes its free plan as limited. Compare current storage and features with the size of your library before choosing a cloud-based alternative.

Check what “free” covers before you switch
Across these categories, an app can cost nothing to install while limiting storage, sync, or advanced features. App guides are dated snapshots rather than guarantees of current terms. Before committing, check the current plan details and test the tasks you actually depend on.

- Email: Confirm the free tier’s storage and features, and decide whether you are changing providers or only changing the mail app.
- Browser: Check bookmark, password, and cross-device sync options rather than assuming Chrome’s Google account behavior will transfer.
- Maps: Test offline availability, traffic, place information, and Android Auto support for your routes and region.
- Photos: Distinguish local viewing from cloud backup, verify where originals are stored, and check the free storage allowance of any backup service.
