Start with the interaction, not the look. Bootstrap does not include a datepicker, so every “Bootstrap datepicker” is either the browser’s native date control styled with Bootstrap classes, a hand-built calendar, or a third-party library. For a single date, the native <input type="date"> is usually the lowest-risk starting point. For a stay, rental or other interval, use a range pattern. For disabled dates, inline availability or a branded calendar, compare custom and third-party code against the license and dependencies of each specific asset.
The roundup this guide draws on is Colorlib’s “36 Best Free Bootstrap Datepicker Examples 2026,” credited to Aigars Silkalns and dated September 28, 2026. It groups 36 examples into 13 Colorlib calendar and booking examples in the main list, five additional 2026 snippets, and 18 CodePen demos by other developers. That grouping is the publisher’s own, not an independent count. Older copies of the page circulate under a “25 Best” title, so check the live page before relying on a count.
Does Bootstrap 5 include a datepicker?
No. Bootstrap’s official site describes Bootstrap as a front-end toolkit and offers installation by package manager, CDN or source download; at the time of checking its homepage reported v5.3.8. A datepicker is not one of its components. When an example is labelled “Bootstrap datepicker,” it means the markup uses Bootstrap classes for layout and styling, and the date logic comes from the example’s own JavaScript, a browser control, or a separate library. Keep that distinction in mind when you search: a “Bootstrap-style” picker and a built-in Bootstrap component are different things.
Choose the interaction first
Each interaction pattern solves a different task. Matching the task to the pattern eliminates most of the list before you look at code.

Compare options on six axes
- Interaction: popup field, inline calendar, two independent fields, or one range widget.
- Dependencies: native browser control, plain JavaScript, or a library that needs jQuery or other packages.
- Keyboard and typing: can a visitor type a date, move through days with arrow keys, and close the picker without a mouse?
- Date semantics: is the submitted value stable, and is the displayed date localised separately?
- Availability and validation: can the interface block past, closed or fully booked dates, and does the server reject them too?
- Reuse terms: is the license and attribution requirement clear for the exact file you are copying?
If you only need one date
Begin with the native input. The browser supplies the calendar, follows the visitor’s locale for display, and needs no script. You can style it with Bootstrap’s form classes such as form-control, and limit the range with min and max:
<label for="delivery-date" class="form-label">Delivery date</label>
<input type="date" id="delivery-date" name="delivery_date"
class="form-control" min="2026-10-09" max="2027-03-31" required>
The calendar popup is drawn by the browser, so its appearance and the way it is opened differ between Chrome, Firefox, Safari and mobile systems. If you need a uniform look across browsers, or a range, a custom calendar is the next step.

Colorlib’s own snippets
Colorlib states that its rebuilt snippets use HTML, CSS and vanilla JavaScript, without jQuery, a datepicker plugin or moment.js. That answers the question “Do the Colorlib datepickers need jQuery or moment.js?” for Colorlib’s snippets only. The statement does not cover the CodePen demos in the same list.

The legacy bootstrap-datepicker project
The bootstrap-datepicker project documents a jQuery API, requires Bootstrap 2.0.4 or later and jQuery 1.7.1 or later, supports configurable formats and start dates, and ships separate stylesheets for Bootstrap 2, Bootstrap 3 or standalone use. Those requirements belong to an older generation of Bootstrap. The project documentation page was unavailable when checked, so do not assume its stated versions are verified for Bootstrap 5 projects.
vanillajs-datepicker
The npm registry listing for vanillajs-datepicker shows version 1.3.4, published in 2023, with input and inline modes, range selection, keyboard operation, internationalisation, no dependencies and an MIT license. The npm package page itself returned an access error when checked, so treat these details as registry-listing information and confirm the current version before you pin it in a project.
CodePen demos by other developers
The 18 CodePen entries cover single-date inputs, check-in and check-out fields, date ranges, a modal-based picker and search forms. Their dependencies vary. Some may use jQuery or a plugin, so open the pen’s settings and confirm every script and stylesheet it loads before you copy it.
Date ranges and availability need server-side checks
A range picker is only a convenience. Its start and end values must be interpreted together: the end date must not come before the start date, and a stay must not overlap a booked period. Block unavailable dates in the interface so visitors cannot select them, then repeat the same checks on the server when the form is submitted. A visitor can bypass client-side scripts, and two users can book the same room in the same moment. Treat the calendar as input assistance, not as the authority on availability.

Date formats: store one value, display another
Numeric dates are ambiguous. 08/09/2026 is 8 September in the United States and 8 August in much of Europe, or 9 August in some other regions depending on convention. Use one of two approaches:
- Store and submit the value in ISO
yyyy-mm-ddform, which is what a native date input sends, and format it for the visitor only when displaying it. - Display the date with a month name, such as “9 October 2026”, wherever a visitor reads it, including confirmation emails.
How do I change the date format?
Change the display format in the picker’s own configuration, not in the stored value. In the legacy bootstrap-datepicker project, the format is a configuration option. In a native input, the visible format is set by the browser and the visitor’s operating system settings, and you cannot change it with CSS or Bootstrap classes. In custom code, convert the ISO value with a formatter such as Intl.DateTimeFormat on the front end, and keep the submitted value unchanged.
Licenses differ by asset
Do not apply one license to the whole roundup. Each asset has its own terms:

- Colorlib snippets: Colorlib states its own snippets are free for personal and commercial use under CC BY 3.0, provided the credit link is kept.
- Bootstrap: the official site lists its code under MIT and its documentation under CC BY 3.0.
- vanillajs-datepicker: the npm listing shows MIT.
- CodePen demos: each pen carries the license its author chose. Colorlib says these are not covered by its own terms, so check each one.
