New York officials said a three-day operation located 34 children and teens who had been reported missing to police in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the NYPD. The young people were 7 to 18 when reported missing. This was a coordinated investigative and support effort—not a report that 34 children were abducted at once.
What was the Long Island Missing Child Rescue Operation?
The operation concluded Thursday, October 1, 2026, after months of planning. It was co-led by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Missing Persons Clearinghouse, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, and the National Child Protection Task Force, with support from New York State Police. More than 100 professionals from nearly 40 agencies and organizations participated.
Investigators worked from a centralized command center in Garden City. They reviewed case information, pursued new leads, shared intelligence, and used technology to support investigations across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Officials have described those methods only in broad terms; they have not identified specific investigative tools.

The 34 were young people with missing-person reports made to police in Nassau or Suffolk County or to the NYPD who were located during the operation. Officials have not provided a verified county- or borough-by-county breakdown.

What happened after the young people were located?
Locating a child was not the end of the response. Law enforcement worked with social workers, advocates, and community organizations to assess each young person’s circumstances and identify needed care. Depending on the individual situation, assistance included safe placement options, medical care, counseling, transportation, clothing, food, and other essentials. Medical examinations and forensic interviews were provided when applicable.
State officials said local providers and advocacy organizations would continue short- and long-term support. The agencies also said investigators continue pursuing additional cases, so the operation should not be taken to mean every missing-child case was closed.

The statewide figures do not describe the circumstances of the 34 cases in this operation. The announcement does not establish that those young people were abducted, trafficked, or runaways; individual case details have not been released.

New York described the Long Island effort as its fourth missing-child operation of this kind. Previous operations in Erie County, the Capital Region, and Westchester County located 168 children and teens, according to the state announcement.
