Before reinstalling Windows, try the repair that matches the problem: repair corrupted system files with DISM and SFC, use Windows 11’s repair reinstall if it is available, or undo a recent update that may have triggered the trouble. These options can avoid a full reset, but none guarantees a fix. Back up important files before you begin.
Choose a repair based on what changed
First check whether Windows still starts and when the problem began. A system-file repair is a reasonable first step for suspected corruption. If issues began after an update, consider removing that update. If you use Windows 11 and can open Settings, its repair reinstall can reinstall Windows while keeping files, apps, and settings.
Microsoft recommends trying less disruptive recovery options before resetting or clean-installing Windows. See Recovery options in Windows for the available paths.

Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt—in other words, open Command Prompt as an administrator. Microsoft’s documented order is DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC). DISM can provide the files needed for repair; SFC checks protected system files and attempts to repair missing or corrupted ones.

Restart Windows and check whether the original problem remains.
If Windows Update cannot provide DISM’s repair files, Microsoft documents using another repair source. The source must be suitable for the Windows installation being repaired; consult Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for the documented options.
Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall when available
Windows 11 includes a reinstall option that can repair the current installation without removing personal files, apps, or settings. It reinstalls the same/current Windows version. The feature is not available on every Windows 11 installation, so its absence from Settings does not by itself mean Windows is damaged.

Undo a recent update or use recovery tools if Windows will not start
If the problem began soon after a Windows update, uninstalling the recent update may be more targeted than reinstalling Windows. Microsoft lists update removal among its recovery options; the route you can use depends on whether Windows starts normally.
If Windows will not start, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) may offer tools such as Startup Repair or System Restore. Choose a tool that fits the situation: Startup Repair addresses some startup problems, while System Restore can revert system changes when a suitable restore point exists. Availability depends on the failure state and recovery configuration, and no one tool fixes every cause.

To reach recovery options, follow Microsoft’s guidance for Windows recovery options and the Windows Recovery Environment. If BitLocker is enabled, you may need the recovery key to access most WinRE options.

Recovery choices differ in what they keep. Reset this PC offers a choice to keep personal files or remove everything, but it removes apps and settings. A clean installation can remove personal files, apps, and settings. Installation media can also be used for an in-place installation that preserves data when the appropriate setup option is selected.
Back up important files before proceeding, and read the keep/remove choices on screen before confirming. Microsoft explains the consequences in its guides to resetting your PC and reinstalling Windows with installation media.
If Windows will not start and you need installation media, Microsoft’s instructions require a USB drive with at least 8 GB of space. Creating a recovery drive erases the drive’s existing contents, so use an empty drive or copy its contents elsewhere first. If malware is suspected, Microsoft recommends scanning with Windows Security; if the problem continues, a clean installation using media may be appropriate.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Repairing a Windows 10 installation may address a technical problem, but it does not restore Microsoft’s security support. Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance covers recovery tools; consider the separate support implications when deciding whether to continue using a repaired Windows 10 PC.
