Windows does not have a universal Settings page that lists every time a laptop was plugged in, unplugged, or charged to a specific percentage. On Windows 11, you can review recent battery activity in Settings and estimate battery health with the built-in battery report; manufacturer software may provide additional charging information.
The battery report is the clearest general-purpose health estimate. For Windows 10, settings paths and Microsoft’s current battery-report instructions may differ by version and device, so check the relevant manufacturer guidance as well.
1. Check recent battery activity in Windows Settings
In Windows 11, recent battery-usage information is under Start > Settings > System > Power & battery. This is useful for reviewing power use, but it is not a complete charging history or battery-health dashboard. Windows 10 settings can vary by build and device; do not assume the Windows 11 path applies.

Windows 11 steps
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Go to System > Power & battery.
- Expand the relevant battery or usage section, such as Battery usage.
The page includes controls for Energy saver, Power Mode, and Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts. Depending on the Windows build and device, it can also show recent battery usage by time period or application.

Use this view to answer questions such as:
- Which apps have used the most battery recently?
- Has the laptop been losing charge unusually quickly?
- Did battery drain continue while the computer was supposed to be asleep?
It cannot reliably answer questions such as “How many times was the charger connected this month?” Windows does not provide a standard, universal charging-event log in Settings. It also does not normally display a built-in battery-health percentage here.
How to interpret “plugged in”
A laptop being connected to power does not necessarily mean that its battery is actively charging. Smart charging, which is available on some Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices, may deliberately stop charging below 100% to reduce battery wear.
When Smart charging is active, a heart may appear on the taskbar battery icon or in Power & battery settings. Hover over the battery icon and you may see Fully Smart charged. That message means charging has been intentionally paused at a manufacturer-selected level—not that the battery has necessarily reached 100%.
2. Generate a Windows battery report with Powercfg
Microsoft’s current battery-report instructions apply to Windows 11. The report creates an HTML file containing capacity information and recorded battery activity.
Generate the report in Windows 11
- Open Start and type Command prompt.
- Right-click Command prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if Windows displays a permission prompt.
- Enter this command exactly: powercfg /batteryreport.
- Press Enter.
- Read the location printed in the Command Prompt window.
- Open that folder in File Explorer and double-click the generated HTML file.
The command does not require you to specify a filename or folder. Windows reports where it saved the file after the command runs. The report is an HTML document, so it opens in a web browser.

Compare design capacity with full charge capacity
Open the Installed battery section near the top of the report. Find these two values:

| Full charge capacity | The capacity the battery currently reports when fully charged. |

For example, if the design capacity is 60,000 mWh and the full charge capacity is 48,000 mWh:
48,000 ÷ 60,000 × 100 = 80%
That result is an estimate based on the battery’s reported capacity. Windows does not necessarily present it as a native health percentage, and the figure should not be treated as a laboratory measurement. Battery capacity naturally falls as a lithium-ion battery ages, so a lower full-charge capacity is expected on an older laptop.

Check the activity sections
The report also includes:
- Recent usage: Recorded periods of battery and AC-power use.
- Battery usage: Battery-drain activity over the periods Windows recorded.
These sections can help identify unusually rapid drain or a recent change in battery behavior. They are not guaranteed to be a complete lifetime record of every charging event, and the report does not universally provide a reliable cycle count on every laptop.

If capacity figures or history are blank, missing, or implausible, Windows may not be receiving complete information from the battery firmware, device drivers, battery-management controller, or the battery itself. The report cannot create data that the hardware does not expose.
3. Use the laptop manufacturer’s battery utility or firmware
Manufacturers often provide controls that are not included in standard Windows. Depending on the laptop model, the manufacturer’s utility or BIOS/UEFI menu may show battery diagnostics, charge thresholds, calibration tools, or a reported cycle count.
Look for the support or management application supplied with your laptop. Common examples include a manufacturer control center, system-support app, or battery-management utility. You can also check the manufacturer’s support page using the exact model number.
What to look for

There is no standardized menu name or location. One laptop may put these options in a Windows app, while another may place them in BIOS/UEFI firmware. Some models expose no additional information at all.

Microsoft does not provide one universal Windows switch for disabling Smart charging. If you need the battery to charge beyond its current limit, use the manufacturer’s documented control for that specific model. Avoid installing unofficial utilities that claim to rewrite battery firmware or bypass charging protections.
Charging problems that can look like battery failure
A low or falling battery percentage while connected to power does not always mean the battery is worn out. Check the charging setup before replacing the battery.
- Wrong or underpowered charger: The adapter may not provide enough wattage for the laptop.
- Wrong USB-C port: Some USB-C ports support data or display output but not laptop charging.
- Inadequate cable: A USB-C cable may not support the power level the laptop requires.
- High system load: Gaming, rendering, or other demanding work can consume power faster than a weak charger supplies it.
- Smart charging: The battery may intentionally stop below 100%.
For USB-C charging, ordinary USB-C can support up to 5 V at 3 A, or 15 W, while USB Power Delivery can provide higher power when the charger, cable, port, and laptop support it. A charger that works for a phone may therefore charge a laptop slowly or fail to keep up while the laptop is being used.
Microsoft also notes that charging may be faster while the laptop is asleep or turned off, especially when the charger is close to the device’s required power rating.
When to stop using the laptop
A reduced capacity estimate is usually an aging issue. A physically swollen battery is different: it is a safety problem. If the battery expands beyond the laptop’s enclosure, stop using the device immediately. Do not press, puncture, bend, or attempt to remove a swollen battery unless you are qualified to do so. Arrange service or battery disposal through the manufacturer or an appropriate electronics-recycling service.

FAQ
Does Windows show a complete charging history?
No. Windows provides recent usage and battery-usage information, but it does not offer a universal page showing every plug-in, unplug, and charging event for the laptop’s entire lifetime.
What is the fastest way to check battery health?
On Windows 11, run powercfg /batteryreport from an elevated Command Prompt. In the HTML report, divide Full charge capacity by Design capacity and multiply by 100.
Why does my laptop say “Fully Smart charged” at 80%?
Smart charging has intentionally paused charging below 100% to reduce long-term battery wear. The message does not mean the battery is defective or that it has reached 100%.
Does the battery report always show cycle count?
No. The report includes capacity and usage sections, but Microsoft does not guarantee a complete lifetime charging log or a universal cycle-count field on every laptop.
Why is my battery discharging while the charger is connected?
The charger may be underpowered or incompatible, the cable may not support the required USB-C power level, the laptop may be connected to the wrong port, or demanding workloads may be consuming more power than the charger supplies.

Use Settings > System > Power & battery in Windows 11 for recent usage, but use powercfg /batteryreport for a practical battery-health estimate under Microsoft’s current Windows 11 instructions. For charge limits, diagnostics, and possible cycle-count information, check the laptop maker’s utility or firmware. Windows does not maintain a universal, complete charging history, and Smart charging can make a healthy battery stop below 100%.
