Short answer: WhatsApp’s normal screenshot and screen-recording tools are designed not to capture View Once photos and videos. The only practical way to preserve what is visibly displayed is to photograph the phone’s screen with a separate device—but that is an external photograph, not a WhatsApp screenshot, and it should only be done with the sender’s consent.
If you legitimately need a lasting copy, the best option is to ask the sender to resend the media as a normal photo or video.
What WhatsApp View Once does
View Once is a WhatsApp mode for photos and videos intended to be opened once and then disappear from the chat interface. The message is marked with a one-time icon; after it has been opened, the conversation shows that it was viewed rather than retaining a normal media preview.
Meta introduced screenshot blocking as an additional privacy layer for View Once media. The feature is protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption and is intended for content that does not need to become a permanent record. This article concerns View Once photos and videos—not WhatsApp’s separate disappearing-messages setting or View Once voice messages.

1. Use the phone’s normal screenshot buttons: blocked
On most Android phones, the usual screenshot shortcut is Power + Volume Down. Some manufacturers offer additional gestures or buttons. On an iPhone, the standard shortcut is:
- iPhone with Face ID: press the Side button and Volume Up together.
- iPhone with a Home button: press the Side or Top button and the Home button together.
Those shortcuts work for ordinary apps and chat content, but they are not a supported way to save a WhatsApp View Once photo or video. WhatsApp marks this type of media as protected, so the capture may be blocked, produce a black or blank result, or otherwise omit the protected content.
On Android, this behavior is consistent with the platform’s secure-display mechanism, commonly implemented through FLAG_SECURE. An app can use that mechanism to prevent screenshots or cause captured content to appear blank. The precise result can vary by Android version, phone manufacturer, WhatsApp release, and the way the feature has been rolled out.

2. Start a screen recording: also unreliable and generally blocked
Both major mobile platforms include built-in screen recording:
- Android: open Quick Settings and choose Screen Record. If the control is not visible, edit the Quick Settings panel to add it.
- iPhone: open Control Center and tap the Screen Recording button. If it is missing, add Screen Recording through Settings > Control Center.
Starting the recorder before opening a View Once message does not provide a dependable workaround. The recording may show a warning, a blank frame, or no usable copy of the protected media. Apple also notes that some apps do not allow their content to be recorded, while WhatsApp’s View Once protection is intended to prevent both screenshots and screen recordings under normal conditions.
The exact result is not guaranteed to look identical on every phone. It can depend on the operating system, WhatsApp build, device manufacturer, and current feature rollout. A recording that appears to work on one outdated setup is not evidence of a reliable or supported method today.

A separate camera or phone is outside WhatsApp’s software capture path. It can photograph whatever is visibly displayed on the first phone, including a View Once photo. For video, it can record the screen while the video plays.

However, this should be described accurately: it is an external photograph or recording of a display, not a screenshot and not a copy of the original media file. The result may have glare, moiré patterns, reflections, perspective distortion, reduced resolution, color shifts, or missing video frames.
Privacy warning: View Once is specifically intended to reduce the chance that sensitive media becomes a permanent record. Do not covertly photograph or record someone else’s View Once content. Ask the sender first, explain why a retained copy is needed, and respect their answer.
For a consent-based documentation setup, stabilizing the second device can improve the result. An optional smartphone tripod can reduce shake when photographing a phone display, but it does not bypass WhatsApp’s protection, recover the original file, or make an undisclosed recording appropriate.
The better solution: ask the sender to resend it normally
If you need to keep, edit, forward, print, or refer back to the media, ask the sender to send it again without enabling View Once. Ordinary WhatsApp photos and videos can be handled using the app’s normal save, forward, and sharing options, subject to the sender’s permission and your phone’s storage settings.
This is preferable to trying to defeat the protection because it preserves the sender’s control and gives you a much better-quality file. It also avoids the technical problems associated with photographing a screen.

Why older WhatsApp Web tricks should not be trusted
Some older guides claimed that WhatsApp Web or the desktop app could display and retain View Once media because of an implementation bug. A reported WhatsApp Web issue in 2024 allowed certain View Once content to be handled improperly, but subsequent reporting indicated that WhatsApp rolled out a longer-term fix later that year.
As a result, browser-extension tutorials and “View Once bypass” instructions based on that incident are outdated and should not be treated as current methods. A behavior observed in a particular browser, account, or WhatsApp build may also disappear after an update.
Methods to avoid
Do not rely on the following as dependable solutions:
- Modified WhatsApp clients: They may expose your account, messages, or login details and may violate WhatsApp’s intended usage rules.
- Rooting or jailbreaking: These can weaken device security, cause compatibility problems, and still do not guarantee access to protected media.
- Browser extensions: An extension claiming to save View Once media may be malicious, outdated, or collecting credentials.
- Screen mirroring: Mirroring does not necessarily remove the secure-display restriction; the mirrored output may remain blank or protected.
- Recovery utilities: View Once media is not an ordinary deleted file waiting to be restored. Claims that generic recovery software can reliably recover it should be treated skeptically.
Do not confuse View Once with disappearing messages

- mobile versus Web or desktop experience; and
- staged or regional feature rollouts.
Therefore, do not treat a particular warning, blank image, or recording result as a universal interface guarantee. A failed capture is expected under the protection; a capture that appears to succeed may reflect an outdated app, a bug, or a different type of media rather than a supported bypass.
Quick decision guide
- Need a permanent copy? Ask the sender to resend the item as ordinary media.
- Have permission to document what is on screen? Use a separate camera or phone, clearly labeling the result as an external photograph or recording.
- Planning to press screenshot or record? Expect View Once protection to block or obscure the result.
- Found a Web, extension, modified-client, or recovery-tool trick? Treat it as outdated or risky unless WhatsApp has explicitly documented the behavior.

Will WhatsApp notify the sender if I try to screenshot a View Once photo?
Do not rely on a universal notification. WhatsApp’s documented behavior is to block screenshots and screen recordings of View Once media; the available evidence does not establish that every attempted capture produces an alert for the sender.

Older WhatsApp Web behavior included a reported implementation bug, but later reporting indicated that WhatsApp fixed it. Current browser-extension and Web-bypass guides are therefore unreliable and may create security or privacy risks.
Can a View Once photo be recovered after it disappears?
You should not expect generic recovery software to restore it. View Once media is designed not to remain available as a normal retained chat file. If you need a copy, ask the sender to resend it.
Is photographing the screen the same as taking a screenshot?
No. A second device can photograph the visible display because it is outside WhatsApp’s software capture controls, but the result is a lower-quality external photograph or recording—not the original image or video file.
