To see your child’s iPhone location, use Apple Family Sharing with Find My. You can also set arrival and departure notifications, while Screen Time helps manage whether a child can change location-sharing settings. These tools depend on location sharing and device settings being enabled; they are not guaranteed, uninterrupted tracking.
How the three methods differ

1. Share your child’s location with Family Sharing and Find My
Set up a Family Sharing group, then enable location sharing for your child. Apple’s documented route is Settings > Family > Location Sharing. The Family Sharing organizer sets up sharing for the group, and each family member can choose whether to share. Once your child shares their location, you can see it in Find My; family locations can also appear in Messages.
- On the organizer’s iPhone, open Settings > Family and follow the prompts to set up Family Sharing if it is not already configured.
- In Settings, open Family > Location Sharing and choose the family members with whom to share locations.
- Make sure Location Services is enabled on the child’s iPhone. Apple’s instructions explain location sharing in its Family Sharing location guide and iPhone user guide.
- Open the Find My app to view the shared location. The family member can stop sharing at any time.
Apple Support puts the control plainly: “You can share your location in Settings or the Find My app, and you can stop sharing your location at any time.” See Apple’s instructions for sharing with a Family Sharing group.
2. Set notifications for arrivals, departures, and place check-ins
Find My can notify you when a family member arrives at or leaves a selected place, or when they are not at a place during a particular time. This can be useful for a practical check-in—for example, whether your child has arrived at school or is home by an agreed time. It is an event notification, not a promise of continuous monitoring.

In Find My, select the family member, then use the option to add a notification for a place or event. Choose the location and whether you want an arrival, departure, or time-based notification, then save it. The available controls and prompts may depend on your iOS version and sharing setup; Apple describes the feature in its Family Sharing location instructions.
3. Use Screen Time to manage location-sharing settings
A parent or guardian in the Family Sharing group can use Screen Time to manage a child’s device. Apple says children and teens with Screen Time turned on may not be able to change their own location-sharing settings. This makes Screen Time a setting-management layer, not the service that displays the child’s location: Family Sharing and Find My do that when location sharing is enabled.

Set up Screen Time for the child through the family settings on the parent or guardian’s device, then review the available content, privacy, and account-change controls. Family location sharing is for seeing a family member’s shared location. Recovering a missing phone is a separate Find My task. Depending on its status and setup, Find My can show whether a device is online or offline, play a sound, enable Lost Mode if a passcode was already set up, or remotely erase it. Apple explains these options in its Find My and Family Sharing guidance.

What to check if you cannot see the location
- Confirm that the child is sharing their location with the family group.
- Check that Location Services is enabled on the child’s iPhone.
- Review Screen Time and other device settings if the child cannot change sharing options.
- Consult Apple’s current instructions for your region, account type, and iOS version. Feature availability and child-account conditions can vary.
