Android’s Privacy Dashboard, approximate location permission, and camera/microphone indicator each answer a different privacy question: what an app accessed recently, how precisely it can locate you, and whether it is using your camera or microphone now. They are practical controls—not a complete record of app behavior or a guarantee of privacy.

At a glance: what each feature tells you

Feature Privacy question it answers Control type
Privacy Dashboard Which apps used listed permissions recently? Recent activity view, with links to app permission settings
Approximate location Can an app receive a general area instead of precise location? App-level location permission
Camera or microphone indicator Which app or service is using a sensor now? Real-time notice; system-wide access toggles may also be available

1. Use Privacy Dashboard to check recent permission activity

The Privacy Dashboard shows when apps accessed the permissions listed there, such as camera or microphone, and lets you review an app’s permission. Google documents a history window of the last seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. It is a recent activity view for the permissions it displays, not a full history of everything an app has done.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Look under Security and privacy or Privacy, then open Privacy dashboard. Labels and paths can vary by phone.
  3. Choose a permission to see which apps accessed it and when.
  4. Select an app to review or change its permission.

Google’s Privacy Dashboard documentation describes the activity view and permission management. If the menu names do not match, search Settings for “Privacy dashboard.”

2. Choose approximate location when an app does not need precision

On supported Android versions, you can allow an app to use approximate rather than precise location. Google Play Help defines approximate location as an area “greater than or equal to 3 square kilometers,” such as the city you are in. That is a category definition, not a promise that every result will be exactly city-sized.

For example, a weather app may only need your general area, while turn-by-turn navigation may need more precision. These are practical examples, not guarantees about what any particular app requires or how it behaves.

  1. Open Settings and find the app’s Location permission, often through Apps, selecting the app, then Permissions.
  2. Choose approximate location or, where shown, turn off Use precise location.
  3. Check the app afterward; features that depend on a precise position may be less useful.

Menu labels and options vary by device. The app permission setting is distinct from Location Accuracy: the permission controls the precision an app may receive, while Location Accuracy helps the device estimate its location using available signals such as GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and sensors. See Google’s guidance on app-disclosed data practices and approximate location and Location Accuracy.

Some devices also offer Camera access and Microphone access controls in Quick Settings. If you do not see those tiles, they may need to be added; availability and behavior vary by device. Turning off system-wide access can interrupt any app that needs the camera or microphone. Google explains the camera and microphone indicators and app permission and global access controls.

What to do when your Android menus look different

Android version and manufacturer affect menu names, locations, and feature availability. Search within Settings for terms such as “Privacy dashboard,” “Location,” “Camera access,” or “Microphone access” rather than assuming every phone follows the same path. Google also notes that Security and privacy settings can vary by Android version.
