A Windows PC that wakes unexpectedly may have an active wake timer, a device allowed to wake it, or—on supported Windows 11 computers—presence sensing set to wake the device when someone approaches. To narrow it down, check powercfg /lastwake, powercfg /waketimers, and powercfg /devicequery wake_armed in an elevated Command Prompt. These are common diagnostic categories, not an exhaustive list or a guaranteed ranking; the results are clues, not always a definitive diagnosis.

Start with Windows’ wake diagnostics

After the next unexpected wake, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run these commands. Check the output before changing any settings; a device or timer listed is worth investigating, but may not by itself prove the root cause.

  1. Check the last reported wake source: run powercfg /lastwake. It reports information about the source of the last sleep transition.
  2. Look for active wake timers: run powercfg /waketimers. If a timer appears, note the process or task named and inspect it before disabling anything.
  3. List devices allowed to wake the PC: run powercfg /devicequery wake_armed.

If the output is blank or inconclusive, that does not establish that nothing woke the PC. Sleep states, firmware, drivers, and hardware differ between computers. For deeper investigation, Microsoft’s powercfg command reference also documents /a for checking available sleep states and /sleepstudy for a power-transition report.

Reason 1: An active wake timer or scheduled task

A wake timer can resume a PC from sleep or hibernation when it expires. Use powercfg /waketimers to see whether one is currently active. If the command identifies a task or process, investigate that item rather than turning off timers indiscriminately. Scheduled maintenance and backups are examples of activities that have been associated with wake events, but an older Windows troubleshooting example is not evidence that Windows Update or any one task is responsible on every current PC.

Microsoft’s powercfg documentation explains that an enabled wake timer can wake the system from sleep and hibernation. A separate Microsoft guide about automatic wakes applies to Windows 7, so its settings path should not be treated as current Windows 11 instructions: PC automatically wakes from sleep mode (II).

Reason 2: A wake-enabled keyboard, mouse, or other device

A keyboard, mouse, or another wake-capable device may be permitted to resume the computer. Compare the output of powercfg /devicequery wake_armed with powercfg /lastwake. If a device looks relevant, check its wake permission in Device Manager. The exact controls can vary by device and PC.

For a targeted change, Microsoft documents powercfg /devicedisablewake "device name". Use the device name shown on your PC, and consider the consequence first: disabling wake for a keyboard or network device may remove a wake method you rely on. Depending on the computer, a key press, mouse click, or opening the lid may be a normal way to resume it. Check your PC documentation or manufacturer’s support site for device-specific behavior. See Microsoft’s guides to powercfg commands and sleep and hibernation.

Reason 3: Windows 11 presence sensing

Some Windows 11 PCs have built-in presence sensors and can be configured to wake when someone approaches. This is a possible cause only if the PC supports the feature and the wake option is enabled. Check Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep for Automatically wake up my device when I approach. If the option appears, review its settings.

Hardware support and device-maker or organizational settings affect which options are available. On systems with S3 sleep and a USB-connected presence sensor, USB Wake Support in BIOS may also be required. Microsoft explains the conditions in its Windows 11 presence-sensing guide.

Change one setting at a time, then check the result

Once a diagnostic points to a plausible cause, change only the relevant setting and observe whether the overnight wake happens again. This makes it easier to tell whether the change helped. If the commands do not identify a clear source, avoid treating any one setting as a confirmed fix; the available sleep states, firmware, drivers, and configuration can affect what Windows reports.

If your main concern is overnight battery drain

You can adjust the PC’s sleep timeouts, or choose hibernate if slower resume is acceptable. Hibernate uses less power than sleep but takes longer to resume, according to Microsoft’s guide to shutting down, sleeping, and hibernating a PC. These are power-use choices, not a diagnosis of what caused a wake.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The operating system continues to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. That support change does not itself explain why a PC wakes unexpectedly. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support end notice.
