A used iPhone 17 Pro can be a sensible buy if its discount is large enough to offset the condition, battery, repair, carrier-lock and seller risks of that particular unit. It is also a recent Pro model, and used and refurbished listings are available. The key is to compare like-for-like devices and verify the phone and the seller before paying—not to assume that every listing is a bargain.
Why consider a used iPhone 17 Pro?
It is still a recent Pro-tier phone
Apple lists the iPhone 17 Pro as introduced in 2025, with an A19 Pro chip, a 6.3-inch display and 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage. Those specifications make it a reasonable model to keep on your shortlist if you want a recent Pro iPhone. They do not, by themselves, make a particular used phone good value. Apple’s iPhone information is the place to confirm specifications for the model and region you are considering.
There are used and refurbished listings to compare
Used and refurbished iPhone 17 Pro listings appear on Swappa, and Best Buy has listed a refurbished unlocked model. These examples show that more than one buying route exists; they do not establish which offer is cheapest, best, or currently available in your location. Check the live listing, seller and terms rather than relying on a general label such as “refurbished.”

Inspection can expose risks before you commit
Apple’s pre-owned buying guidance covers Activation Lock, battery health, parts history, carrier lock, physical condition and return terms. Checking these details helps you rule out unsuitable units and judge whether a remaining discount compensates for the risks and likely service needs. Apple’s guide to buying a pre-owned iPhone describes the checks to make.
#1 Best Overall

- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
How to decide whether the price is good
There is no universal target price for a used iPhone 17 Pro. Cost varies with country, storage, carrier status, condition, seller protections and available stock. Swappa’s pricing page was updated September 29, 2026, and its prices vary by configuration and carrier; listings can change. Use Swappa’s pricing page as a live comparison point, not a guaranteed market-wide average.
Compare the exact configuration in your country: 256GB against 256GB, for example, and an unlocked phone against an unlocked phone. Then compare its total out-of-pocket cost with the best available new or refurbished offer. Account for likely battery or service expense, and require a bigger discount if the used seller offers weaker returns or warranty protection. Apple’s online service estimator did not provide a usable price in the information available for this guide, so obtain a current service estimate for your location before treating a battery or repair need as a known cost.

What to check before buying
Stop if Activation Lock is enabled
Apple’s advice is explicit: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If an online device displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it. Do not accept a seller’s assurance that the lock can be removed later; the previous owner must remove the device from their account before it is ready for you to use. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance.
Check battery health and parts history together
On the iPhone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see available maximum-capacity and cycle-count information. Then open Settings > General > About and review Parts and Service History. Available information can vary, so inspect the actual phone rather than assuming every listing will show the same details.

An “Unknown” or unverified battery can mean its health information is inaccurate. A genuine part marked “Used” is a different status from “Unknown”; read the displayed status rather than treating the two as interchangeable. Apple explains battery health and repair information. There is no single battery-capacity cutoff established here that makes every used phone a good or bad purchase: weigh the displayed condition against the price and the cost of service in your region.
Confirm the carrier lock and compatibility
Go to Settings > General > About and look for Service Provider Lock. “No SIM restrictions” indicates an unlocked phone; a named provider indicates a restriction to that provider. Verify that the device will work with your carrier and in your country before paying. Apple’s guidance on unlocking an iPhone explains the carrier-lock status.

Inspect the phone and get the seller’s terms in writing
Check the display, cameras, buttons, speakers, microphones, charging and connectivity, and look for damage that could affect use. For an online purchase, read the return window and the reasons a return is allowed before checkout. Ask what the seller’s certification actually tests, what parts or battery standards it requires, and whether a warranty remains on this device. “Refurbished” is not a uniform promise: tests, parts, battery thresholds, warranties and returns depend on the specific seller and listing.
Apple’s limited warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year from the original purchase, but excludes accidental damage and normal battery wear. Coverage depends on the individual device, so check its status rather than assuming it has a full year remaining. Check Apple coverage and review Apple’s warranty terms.

- Activation Lock is enabled, or the seller cannot show that the phone is ready for a new owner.
- The seller will not let you verify battery and parts information or demonstrate that key functions work.
- The phone is carrier-locked to a provider you cannot use.
- The seller’s return policy, warranty or certification claims are vague, or the savings do not justify the weaker protection.
- After likely service costs, a comparable new or better-protected refurbished phone is close enough in price that the used listing no longer makes sense.
Is a used iPhone 17 Pro worth it?
It can be worth considering because the model remains a recent Pro-tier phone and used inventory exists. Make the decision on the specific device: compare equivalent configurations, verify Activation Lock, carrier status, battery and repair history, and put the seller’s return and warranty terms alongside the price. Buy only when the verified condition and protections make the discount worthwhile.
