Three paid upgrades are worth considering for a Raspberry Pi 5, but each one only pays off when a specific problem calls for it: an NVMe SSD for storage-heavy work, active cooling for sustained heavy loads, and a capable USB-C power supply when the current one falls short. None of them is a general speed boost for a board that already has adequate power and runs its workload comfortably. The guidance below draws on Raspberry Pi’s own documentation, launch material and product pages, so the performance figures quoted are manufacturer claims rather than independent test results.
Which upgrade fits which problem
Each upgrade solves a different limitation, and each has a condition under which it is unnecessary. The table sets out the trade-offs.
| Upgrade | What it solves | Worth buying when | Not needed when | Extra parts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVMe storage | Storage capacity and I/O speed | Storage-heavy applications, or you want the operating system or data on an SSD | Storage needs are modest and the current storage meets them | M.2 adapter (Raspberry Pi’s M.2 HAT+), an NVMe drive, and a compatible case |
| Active cooling | Thermal throttling during heavy continuous load | Sustained CPU-heavy work, overclocking, or enclosed builds that trap heat | Normal use, where Raspberry Pi says added cooling is optional | Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler, or a case with active cooling |
| 27W USB-C power supply | Insufficient power for the board to boot and run reliably | The current supply is under-rated, or you are building a new system | The existing supply already meets Raspberry Pi’s requirements | Raspberry Pi 5 27W USB-C power supply |
Check these in order before buying anything
- Power first. An under-rated supply can undermine the other two upgrades, so confirm it is a good-quality USB-C supply rated for at least 5V at 3A (15W). If it is not, that is the one upgrade to make regardless of workload.
- Storage second. If the board is limited by how much data it holds or how fast it reads and writes, the NVMe path is the relevant option. If storage is not a bottleneck, skip it.
- Workload last. Cooling is a response to sustained heat, so decide it by how the board is used rather than by what it is capable of.
1. NVMe storage: for capacity and I/O, not general speed
NVMe is the most tangible storage upgrade for a Raspberry Pi 5. Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes the M.2 HAT+ as allowing M.2 peripherals, including NVMe drives, to connect to the Pi 5’s PCIe interface (Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation). Raspberry Pi’s launch article says the board adds PCIe connectivity so that NVMe and other M.2-format accessories can be attached (Introducing: Raspberry Pi 5!, 2023).
What the upgrade requires
- An M.2 adapter. The M.2 HAT+ is the Raspberry Pi route described in its documentation.
- An NVMe drive in a format the adapter accepts.
- A case that physically accommodates the adapter and drive. Raspberry Pi’s M.2 HAT+ material flags a case-fit constraint with the standard Pi 5 case, so check enclosure fit before ordering.
- A short setup step to boot from or mount the drive, which depends on how you intend to use it.
Which SSD works with Raspberry Pi 5?
Not every M.2 SSD works with every adapter or case, and no drive should be assumed compatible on the strength of its form factor alone. Compatibility lists change as hardware and firmware are revised, so confirm the exact drive, adapter and case against Raspberry Pi’s current M.2 HAT+ instructions before you buy. Once you have confirmed compatibility, the choice of drive comes down to the capacity and endurance you need for your workload.

2. Active cooling: for sustained heavy load
Cooling is the upgrade most often bought without need. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 article on heating and cooling the Pi 5, by Alasdair Allan (4 October 2023), says that for normal usage added cooling is entirely optional, but that a heavy continuous load can potentially cause thermal throttling (Heating and cooling Raspberry Pi 5).
Is cooling necessary for Raspberry Pi 5?
It depends on what the board does for long periods. The cases where cooling is worth paying for are:

The Case can accurately access usb-c power jack,Micro HD Out ports, usb ports, Ethernet jack, card slot, power button, 4-lane MIPI DSI/CSI connectors and so on, and it also supports installation of cooling fan.
- 64GB Card Kit and GaN 27W USB-C Power Supply: With extra 64GB card to store more files and card readers for multiple medium, keep better performance for Raspberry Pi 5, 27W USB C Power Supply is Compatible with Pi5 8GB, offers a variety of output voltage options, including 5.1V at 5A, 9.0V at 3.0A, 12.0V at 2.25A, and 15.0V at 1.8A, providing for different device requirements.
- Sustained CPU-heavy work that keeps the processor busy for long stretches, such as long compile jobs or continuous rendering.
- Overclocking, where the extra heat is the reason to add cooling.
- Enclosed builds where the case traps heat that would otherwise escape.
Occasional bursts of load, light desktop use and small server tasks that idle most of the time are not reasons to buy a cooler. Raspberry Pi’s current product page lists the Active Cooler as an accessory for the Pi 5 (Buy a Raspberry Pi 5).

3. A capable USB-C power supply: a fix, not a speed upgrade
Raspberry Pi’s documentation says the Pi 5 needs a good-quality USB-C supply capable of delivering 3A at +5V (15W) to boot, and it recommends its 27W USB-C power supply (Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation). The purchase is justified in two situations:

- The current supply is under-rated, for example an older phone charger or a generic adapter that cannot deliver the stated 3A at 5V.
- You are assembling a new Pi 5 system and need a supply that meets the requirement from the start.
If the existing supply already meets Raspberry Pi’s requirement, replacing it should not be expected to make the board faster. Its value is in reliable operation, not additional performance.
What the manufacturer performance figures do and do not show
Raspberry Pi’s 2023 launch article compares the Pi 5 with the Pi 4 and says the Pi 5 has between two and three times the CPU and GPU performance, and roughly twice the memory and I/O bandwidth (Introducing: Raspberry Pi 5!, 2023). These are the manufacturer’s comparison figures for the board itself. They are not independent benchmarks, and they do not measure what any add-on contributes. Do not read them as evidence that an SSD, cooler or power supply produces that gain.

Bottom line for buyers
Buy an NVMe path if storage is genuinely limiting you, buy active cooling if the board runs heavy loads for long periods or is enclosed in a way that traps heat, and buy a 27W USB-C supply if the current one is under-rated or you are starting a new build. Confirm compatibility with Raspberry Pi’s current instructions before purchase, because product lineups and compatibility details can change after the 2023 sources cited here.
