Three NES games make a strong case for lasting influence: Super Mario Bros. made continuous platforming a defining home-console experience, The Legend of Zelda built an adventure around discovery, and Metroid tied exploration to abilities that open new routes. “Changed gaming forever” is an argument about their legacy, not a measurable fact; Nintendo’s histories and creator interviews show what each set out to do and when.
Why these three NES games matter
Nintendo says the NES launched in North America in 1985, after the 1983 video-game crash, and describes the console’s arrival as revitalizing the industry. That is Nintendo’s qualitative account; it does not quantify the recovery. Within that moment, these three games illustrate distinct design ideas rather than a single invention: sustained action for home play, adventure through discovery, and exploration shaped by upgrades.

Super Mario Bros. made home-console platforming a landmark
Nintendo dates the NES release of Super Mario Bros. to October 18, 1985. In a later reflection, then-Nintendo president Satoru Iwata emphasized that it was conceived for the home: “But Super Mario Bros. was clearly designed for home use from the very start.” His observation is a useful perspective on the game’s intended setting, not evidence that no earlier home game shared those qualities.

Rather than treating the NES simply as a destination for arcade-style play, it helped establish what a sustained, stage-based platform game could feel like in the living room.

The Legend of Zelda made adventure about discovery
Shigeru Miyamoto described the ambition behind The Legend of Zelda as bringing adventure into a video game: “Right, I wanted to bring that sense of adventure to a video game.” In the same Nintendo interview, he characterized the team’s concept as an adventure game based on treasure hunting. This supports a claim about deliberate design intent, not a claim that Zelda was the first game to feature exploration or treasure.
The game’s significance lies in making discovery central to the experience: players venture through a world in search of what it contains. Miyamoto’s retrospective account also adds an important connection to Super Mario Bros.: Zelda development began before Mario, the projects shared staff, and ideas passed between them. Their influence therefore grew from overlapping creative work, not isolated acts of invention.
Metroid linked exploration to new abilities
Nintendo dates the first Metroid to August 6, 1986, on Japan’s Family Computer Disk System. It later reached the NES in North America in 1987. Nintendo’s retrospective describes a structure built around exploring maze-like areas and gaining weapons or abilities that open access to new locations.
That structure makes progress depend on more than finding the next exit: a newly acquired ability can change how the player understands and navigates familiar territory. It is the clearest basis for describing the original game’s lasting design contribution. The later term “Metroidvania” should not be treated as proof that the original invented a genre label; Nintendo’s account supports the exploration-and-upgrades pattern, not that broader origin claim.

What each game contributed
| Game | Design idea foregrounded | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Super Mario Bros. | Continuous, stage-based action designed for home play | Nintendo gives the NES release date as October 18, 1985; Iwata later described it as designed for home use from the start. |
| The Legend of Zelda | Adventure centered on discovery and treasure hunting | Miyamoto recalled that intention in a Nintendo interview; the account also describes overlapping development with Mario. |
| Metroid | Maze exploration in which acquired abilities open new locations | Nintendo’s retrospective identifies this as a signature series pattern; the original debuted in Japan in 1986 before its North American NES release in 1987. |
Taken together, the games show three different ways to make play compelling: keep the action moving, invite players to seek out a world’s secrets, or reward them for returning to places with new capabilities. Their reputations as landmarks are persuasive because those design priorities remain recognizable; the sources establish their dates and creators’ stated intentions, rather than measuring how much each changed the industry.
