For common Windows glitches, a suspected malware infection, or a problem that needs another person’s help, the right free tool depends on what is wrong. Microsoft’s Get Help app guides local troubleshooting, Quick Assist connects you with a trusted remote helper, and Microsoft Defender Offline scans for malware outside the usual Windows session. None is a universal repair tool, and these tools are not evidence of personal testing or use.
Choose the tool that matches the problem

Use Get Help for guided troubleshooting
Get Help includes troubleshooters for audio, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), printers, program compatibility, video playback, Windows Media Player, and Windows Update. Microsoft describes these troubleshooters as diagnostic tests that check system configuration and offer findings or suggestions. For Windows Update error codes, Microsoft says its troubleshooter may help resolve download and installation problems. See Microsoft’s Get Help and troubleshooting guidance and its Windows Update troubleshooter instructions.
Open the Get Help app from Start, then search for the issue or select the relevant troubleshooting topic. It is a sensible first stop for a narrow symptom such as audio not working or a printer problem. Its role is guided diagnosis—not a guarantee that it can repair hardware faults, every software failure, or damage caused by malware.

Use Quick Assist when a trusted person needs to see the PC
Quick Assist is intended to let someone help with a computer problem remotely, including a family member or friend. Microsoft Learn says, “Quick Assist remains available for everyone who needs remote assistance,” in its Windows device recovery framework. Microsoft also describes how to solve PC problems remotely using Quick Assist.

A remote session has a privacy and security trade-off: the helper may see the screen, and can control the PC if the person at the computer grants that permission. Only connect with someone you trust, review what permission the session requests, and do not approve control if you are not comfortable with it. Quick Assist is not the right choice when you do not want another person to view the screen or interact with the device.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline for suspected malware
If a malware infection is suspected, Microsoft recommends running a Windows Security virus scan. Defender Offline is the more targeted option when an offline scan is appropriate: it runs outside the normal Windows environment, which can help address threats that are difficult to scan while Windows is running. Microsoft says it can be started from Windows Security on Windows 10 version 1607 or newer and Windows 11. Follow Microsoft’s Microsoft Defender Offline guidance.

The usual route is through Windows Security; creating bootable media is an optional advanced method, not a prerequisite for starting the scan. Microsoft’s boot-media instructions call for a blank CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with at least 250 MB free. Do not treat that requirement as a recommendation that every household buy a drive.

Windows also offers recovery options such as uninstalling updates, System Restore, Reset this PC, and Command Prompt in the Windows Recovery Environment. These are escalation steps, not routine first moves: understand the data and configuration consequences of the option you choose, and back up important files when possible. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options page explains the available paths.

Important: Windows 10 is no longer supported
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that operating system.
