Our verdict
1. NordVPN: best general-purpose VPN for iPhone
NordVPN is the safest default recommendation when you want a polished iPhone app, a broad set of security extras, and protection that applies to the device rather than only to one browser. Its current iOS materials document one-tap connection, automatic connection options, NordLynx, Siri and Voice Control compatibility, tracker and ad blocking, scam and phishing protection, and Dark Web Monitor.
#1 Best Overall
- 【DUAL BAND AX TRAVEL ROUTER】Products with US, UK, EU Plug; Dual band network with wireless speed 574Mbps (2.4G)+2402Mbps (5G); 2.5G Multi-gigabit WAN port and a 1G gigabit LAN port; USB 3.0 port; Wi-Fi 6 offers more than double the total Wi-Fi speed with the MT3000 VPN Router.
- 【VPN CLIENT & SERVER】OpenVPN and WireGuard are pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers (active subscription required). Simply log in to your existing VPN account with our portable wifi device, and Beryl AX automatically encrypts all network traffic within the connected network. Max. - 【PROTECT YOUR NETWORK SECURITY】Our pocket wifi, unlike other vulnerable portable wifi hotspot for travel purposes supports WPA3 protocol–Preventive measures against password brute-force attacks; DNS over HTTPS & DNS over TLS–Protecting domain name system traffic and preventing data eavesdropping from malicious parties; IPv6–Built-in authentication for privacy protection, eliminating the need for network address translation.
- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
The most important practical feature is its documented iOS kill switch. If the VPN connection unexpectedly drops, NordVPN says the kill switch disables system-wide internet access instead of allowing traffic to continue outside the tunnel. That is more useful for privacy than a browser-only failsafe, although no software feature should be treated as an absolute guarantee against every future implementation defect.
NordLynx is NordVPN’s WireGuard-based protocol. NordVPN presents it as its preferred iOS protocol for balancing speed and security, but that is a provider position, not an independently measured speed ranking. If the app offers a choice between automatic selection and NordLynx, NordLynx is the logical starting point for ordinary use; switch only when a particular network or feature requires it.
Choose NordVPN if:
- You want the simplest all-purpose iPhone experience.
- You care about a system-wide kill switch and automatic connection behavior.
- You want optional anti-tracking, ad-blocking, scam, phishing, and Dark Web monitoring tools in the same subscription.
- You need coverage for several devices but do not require unlimited connections. NordVPN advertises support for up to 10 devices on one account.
NordVPN limitations to understand
Do not assume every security extra is included in every subscription tier or works identically on every protocol. NordVPN’s own iOS information notes that features can vary by protocol; obfuscated servers, for example, have historically depended on particular protocol choices. Check the plan and in-app feature descriptions before buying if a specific tool is the reason for your decision.

Apple’s U.S. App Store privacy disclosure for NordVPN says the developer may handle identifiers, contact information, usage data, and diagnostics. Apple also says these disclosures are supplied by the developer and are not verified by Apple. That does not by itself establish that NordVPN is unsafe, but it is a useful reminder to read both the provider’s privacy policy and Apple’s privacy label rather than treating a VPN as a zero-data service.
2. Surfshark: best VPN for many devices
Surfshark’s defining advantage is simple: it advertises unlimited simultaneous device connections. That makes it the most convenient choice for a household covering iPhones, iPads, Macs, Windows PCs, televisions, and other supported devices under one account. It is also useful for a single person with a large collection of devices who does not want to count active connections.
The iOS app documents CleanWeb, a kill switch, protocol selection, website bypassing through Bypasser, rotating IP, NoBorders, and Invisible on LAN. Its feature documentation also lists Dynamic MultiHop, Pause VPN, and IP Rotator as available on iOS, though individual features and subscription tiers can change.
The U.S. App Store listing reviewed for this guide reported a 4.7 rating, iOS 16.1 compatibility, a network of more than 4,500 servers in 100 countries, and 10-Gbps server capacity. Those are provider or App Store statements, not independently reproduced measurements. App Store ratings also fluctuate and should not be used as a substitute for privacy or performance testing.
Choose Surfshark if:
- You need unlimited simultaneous connections.
- You are buying for a family, shared household, or unusually large device collection.
- You want convenience features such as rotating IP, NoBorders, CleanWeb, or a pause control in addition to basic VPN protection.
- You want to bypass the VPN for selected websites on your iPhone.
The important iOS Bypasser caveat
Surfshark’s Bypasser documentation needs careful reading. On iOS, Surfshark says website bypassing is currently available. That should not be interpreted as full Android-style app split tunneling. In other words, the feature may let a selected website use your normal connection, but it does not necessarily let you exclude any arbitrary installed iPhone app from the VPN tunnel.

- 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
Similarly, Invisible on LAN and a kill switch can affect local-network behavior. If a VPN-connected iPhone cannot find a printer, cast target, or other device on the same network, review the LAN setting before assuming the app is malfunctioning.
3. Proton VPN: best for privacy transparency and free use
Proton VPN is the strongest pick for readers who prioritize privacy documentation, open-source software, published audits, and a free plan over the broadest compatibility. Its iOS app currently requires iOS 17.0 or later, so it is not suitable for an iPhone that cannot run that version.
Proton’s App Store listing describes a free plan with unlimited data and no bandwidth or speed restrictions. The free tier has servers in a defined, limited set of countries, while Proton says paid users can connect to servers in more than 110 countries. Free access is therefore useful for basic privacy protection, but it is less flexible if you need a particular country or a broad choice of nearby servers.
Recommended Free Tools
Proton emphasizes open-source apps, a no-logs policy, and published independent audits. Its documented privacy features include Secure Core, DNS leak prevention, kill switch, always-on VPN, and Tor support. These are evidence about the company’s design and policies; they are not proof that a future app release can never contain a defect or leak.
Choose Proton VPN if:
- You want to start with a documented free iPhone VPN rather than a trial that later requires payment.
- You place high value on open-source code, published audits, and privacy-focused technical documentation.
- You are comfortable with a minimum requirement of iOS 17.0.
- You want privacy controls such as Secure Core, NetShield on eligible plans, profiles, Siri Shortcuts, alternative routing, or LAN controls.
Proton’s current Apple-platform protocol limitation
Proton’s protocol support has changed. Its lifecycle documentation says IKEv2 is no longer supported on iOS and iPadOS, and OpenVPN is not supported in the native iOS app. Manual third-party configuration may still be possible in some circumstances, but ordinary iPhone users should expect WireGuard to be the practical current protocol path inside Proton’s app.
Why Proton’s kill switch deserves attention on iPhone
Proton says Apple devices are vulnerable to the TunnelVision routing attack unless the kill switch is enabled, and says its iOS and iPadOS apps mitigate that issue when the kill switch is on. Treat this as an important configuration recommendation, not as an independently verified guarantee. If you choose Proton for privacy, enable its kill switch and confirm that the app shows it as active.
Which iPhone VPN should you choose?
Pick NordVPN for the best default
Choose NordVPN when your priorities are a polished app, broad general-purpose features, automatic connection options, NordLynx, and system-wide protection if the tunnel fails. It is the least complicated recommendation for someone who does not have a specialized requirement.
Pick Surfshark for a household
Choose Surfshark when unlimited simultaneous connections matter more than having the strongest privacy-transparency story in this shortlist. It is particularly straightforward for families or homes with many devices.

Pick Proton VPN for privacy evidence or free use
Choose Proton when open-source positioning, published audits, and a clearly documented free tier are more important than the newest compatibility. Verify that the iPhone runs iOS 17 or later and that the free server selection meets your needs.
What matters when comparing VPNs for iPhone
1. Minimum iOS version
Compatibility is the first filter. NordVPN documents iOS 16.0 or later, Surfshark documents iOS 16.1 or later, and Proton VPN documents iOS 17.0 or later. Check your phone under Settings > General > Software Update before paying for a subscription. An older iPhone may be able to install one app but not another.
2. Kill-switch behavior
A kill switch is intended to stop internet traffic if the VPN connection fails. For an iPhone, prefer a provider that documents protection for the whole device rather than only for a browser tab. Enable the setting in the VPN app, then verify it yourself: connect to the VPN, temporarily interrupt the connection or change networks, and confirm whether internet access stops until the VPN reconnects. Do not perform this test while an important upload, call, or transaction is in progress.
3. Protocol availability
WireGuard-based protocols are common in current iPhone VPN apps, but the names and available fallbacks differ. NordVPN uses the NordLynx name for its WireGuard-based implementation. Surfshark provides protocol selection. Proton’s native iOS app currently centers on WireGuard because OpenVPN and IKEv2 are no longer supported natively. A protocol choice can affect compatibility and behavior, but the provider’s claim that one option is fastest is not the same as a controlled independent benchmark.
4. Privacy evidence rather than privacy slogans
A no-logs statement is a company policy claim. Stronger supporting evidence can include independent audits, published transparency material, open-source code, and clear technical documentation. Even then, using a VPN requires transferring some trust from your internet provider or public Wi-Fi operator to the VPN provider. A VPN company can potentially see or handle connection-related information, and the Federal Trade Commission warns that a VPN does not make a person fully anonymous.
Websites can still recognize you through account logins, cookies, browser or device fingerprinting, and information you submit. A VPN changes the network path and usually the visible IP address; it does not erase your online identity.
5. Device limits and free tiers
Surfshark advertises unlimited simultaneous connections. NordVPN advertises up to 10 devices, and Proton’s paid plan advertises up to 10 devices. These figures describe account or plan limits, not necessarily every device that can be installed or every network configuration that can run at once.
Among these three, Proton is the only provider with a clearly documented free plan in the reviewed material. Free service can be appropriate for occasional public-Wi-Fi protection, but check its available countries and feature restrictions before relying on it for a specific location.

How to set up a VPN on an iPhone
- Check iOS compatibility. Confirm your iPhone meets the provider’s current minimum version: 16.0 for NordVPN, 16.1 for Surfshark, or 17.0 for Proton VPN, based on the information reviewed on August 12, 2026.
- Install the official app. Use the App Store listing for the provider and check the developer name carefully. Avoid unofficial configuration profiles or unknown VPN apps.
- Sign in or create an account. Select the free plan where available, or review the subscription term and renewal price before confirming an in-app purchase. App Store and direct-website prices can differ and can change by region.
- Approve the VPN configuration. iOS will ask for permission to add a VPN configuration. Review the prompt and approve it only for the provider you intended to install.
- Turn on the kill switch. Look in the app’s settings for Kill Switch, Always-on VPN, or equivalent protection. The exact label can change between app versions. Proton users should treat this setting as especially important because of Proton’s TunnelVision guidance for Apple devices.
- Select a protocol if necessary. Start with the app’s automatic choice or its current WireGuard-based option. With NordVPN, that is NordLynx; with Proton, WireGuard is the practical native iOS choice. Change protocols only if you have a connection or compatibility reason.
- Connect to a suitable server. For everyday use, choose a nearby location rather than a distant country. Use a specific country only when you have a legitimate reason, and remember that a VPN does not guarantee access to any particular streaming service.
- Check the connection indicator. Confirm that the VPN app reports an active connection and that iOS shows the VPN status indicator. Repeat the check after switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
Simple checks after setup
- IP-address check: Confirm that a website sees the VPN server’s approximate IP location rather than your normal public IP. This checks the apparent network location, not anonymity.
- Reconnect check: Move between Wi-Fi and cellular data and watch whether the VPN reconnects. If the kill switch is enabled, temporary loss of internet access may be expected while the tunnel is unavailable.
- DNS and leak check: Use a reputable leak-testing service and repeat the check after reconnecting. One successful result is not proof of permanent protection after every app update or network change.
- Local-network check: Test any printer, AirPlay target, or other local device you need. VPN settings such as Invisible on LAN or LAN controls may affect discovery.
- Battery and speed observation: Watch your own normal use over several days instead of assuming a provider’s speed claim applies to your iPhone, network, protocol, and server. No independent battery or speed test was available for this guide.
What a VPN cannot do on an iPhone
- It cannot make you anonymous. Logged-in websites, cookies, fingerprinting, and voluntarily submitted information can still identify you.
- It cannot hide GPS location from apps that have permission. A VPN changes network-based location signals, not the phone’s GPS permission or sensor data.
- It cannot prevent phishing by itself. Some products add scam, phishing, or malicious-site filtering, but a VPN is not a replacement for careful link handling, current software, and account security.
- It cannot guarantee malware protection. Ad and tracker blocking can reduce some unwanted connections, but it is not a complete mobile security suite.
- It cannot guarantee streaming access. Streaming services may detect and block VPN addresses, and availability can vary by country, server, account, and service terms.
- It cannot guarantee a speed improvement. Encryption and routing through another server can change latency and throughput. The result depends on the network, server, protocol, congestion, and distance.
Prices, ratings, and availability change
Do not treat an App Store price as an evergreen value judgment. Subscription prices vary by plan, region, promotion, billing channel, and renewal term. Confirm the current total cost and renewal conditions at checkout.
The same caution applies to server counts, country counts, app ratings, iOS requirements, and feature names. At the time of review, the U.S. App Store listing showed 4.7 ratings for both NordVPN and Surfshark, while Surfshark’s listing reported more than 4,500 servers across 100 countries and 10-Gbps server capacity. Those figures can change and do not constitute an independent quality benchmark.
Why this guide does not say tested
The original buying-guide wording described the VPNs as tested and reviewed, but no repeatable iPhone test results were available for this edition. Accordingly, this article does not claim that ResearchCore or the author measured connection speed, latency, battery drain, streaming access, leak protection, or reliability.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA defensible hands-on comparison would need to record the iPhone model, iOS version, Wi-Fi and cellular networks, server locations, test times, protocol, baseline speed, VPN speed, latency, reconnection behavior, DNS and IP leak results, battery observations, and the specific streaming services tested. Without that information, a measured winner would be misleading.
Troubleshooting common problems
The internet stops after the VPN drops
This is usually the intended effect of a kill switch. Reopen the VPN app and reconnect. If you need temporary access, disable the kill switch only long enough to troubleshoot, then turn it back on. Try a nearby server, update the app, or switch to another available protocol if the problem continues.
A website or app will not load while connected
Try another server and check whether the problem is limited to one website. If the provider supports it, use website bypassing for that site rather than assuming the entire VPN is broken. Surfshark’s iOS Bypasser should be understood as website bypassing, not unrestricted app-level split tunneling.
Local devices disappear
Review Invisible on LAN or LAN-control settings and reconnect to the same Wi-Fi network. Some privacy settings intentionally prevent local-network discovery.

Compare your iOS version with the provider’s current minimum. Proton VPN’s iOS 17.0 requirement is stricter than NordVPN’s 16.0 and Surfshark’s 16.1 requirements in this comparison. Also confirm that the App Store account region supports the app and subscription you are trying to use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a VPN worth using on an iPhone?
It can be useful on untrusted Wi-Fi, for changing the IP address visible to websites, and for shifting network trust away from a local network or internet provider. It does not provide complete anonymity, hide GPS location from permitted apps, or replace phishing and malware protection.
Which is the best free VPN for iPhone?
Proton VPN is the strongest free option among these recommendations because its reviewed App Store listing describes unlimited data without bandwidth or speed restrictions. Its free server locations are limited, and the app requires iOS 17.0 or later.
Does an iPhone VPN hide my location?
It can change your apparent IP-based location, but it does not hide GPS coordinates from apps that have location permission. Websites can also identify you through logins, cookies, fingerprinting, or information you provide.
Do I need a VPN when using cellular data?
Not necessarily, but a VPN can still change the IP address visible to websites and route traffic through the VPN provider. Cellular data is not automatically anonymous, and the same limitations about trust, tracking, and GPS still apply.
Can these VPNs guarantee access to Netflix or other streaming services?
No. Streaming platforms can detect and block VPN servers, and access can change by country, server, account, and service policy. None of these recommendations should be purchased solely on a promise of guaranteed streaming access.
Why should I enable a VPN kill switch on iPhone?
A kill switch is designed to block internet traffic if the VPN connection fails, reducing the chance that traffic continues over the ordinary connection. Proton specifically recommends its iOS kill switch in the context of the TunnelVision routing attack. It is a configuration safeguard, not an absolute guarantee.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose NordVPN for the most balanced iPhone experience, Surfshark if unlimited household connections are the deciding factor, and Proton VPN if privacy transparency or free use matters most. Check the current iOS requirement, plan limits, privacy label, renewal price, and kill-switch setting before subscribing. These recommendations are based on documented capabilities, not independent speed, battery, streaming, or leak testing.
