A Hindustan Times report published October 2, 2026, says the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in consultation with the Ladakh administration, formally identified 28 places and geographical features in Ladakh through standard names on the Survey of India (SoI) map. The stated aim was to support accurate recognition and public awareness of their locations and names. The report provides the list; the SoI map page currently located for context lists a 2025 edition and does not independently confirm the reported 2026 action.

What the reported identification means

The October 2, 2026, Hindustan Times report attributes the identification to the MHA in consultation with the Ladakh administration. It says standard names were formally identified on the SoI map to help people recognize the features and know their locations. The report also relays an unnamed official’s expectation that consistent naming would benefit public and official references; it does not name that official.

This is evidence of a naming and identification exercise. The report does not establish a boundary or legal-status change, any change to access or travel, or a specific geopolitical motive.

The report’s table and prose do not use identical forms for every name: its table says “Skamri Glacier,” while its prose calls it “Skamri”; the table says “Yangpa River,” while the prose calls it “Yangpa.” The list above follows the table-style forms where those differ, and the classifications here reflect the report.

What the Survey of India map page confirms

SoI’s State Maps page lists “Ladakh (English)” as the 3rd/2025 edition at a scale of 1:1,000,000 and offers it as a free download. That official listing predates the October 2026 report. It provides map context, but does not show that the 2025 edition contains these 28 names or verify that the reported identification has been added to a later map.
