The best author website examples make three things clear at a glance: who the author is, what they write, and what a visitor can do next. These 21 examples show ways to signal genre, feature a book or catalog, invite newsletter signups, and organize a broader author platform. They are useful design references—not proof that a particular layout produces more sales or signups.

How to assess an author website example

Before borrowing a design idea, consider what the site needs to do for its own readers. BookBub recommends using consistent visual cues to signal genre and making newsletter signup easy to find. Site Builder Report emphasizes a clear introduction and visible books and purchase links. Shopify’s Julie Broad example puts the main book-order action in the top banner.

  • Genre and brand fit: Do the cover display, colors, typography, logo, and imagery make the kind of work clear?
  • Offer visibility: Can visitors find the featured book, catalog, or service and reach its purchase page without hunting through the site?
  • Next action: Is the main step—buy a book, read a sample, subscribe, or get in touch—easy to identify?
  • Signup value: Is the newsletter invitation easy to find, and does it explain why a reader might subscribe?
  • Site scope: Does the navigation suit one book, a backlist, or an author with other media and projects?
  • Usability: Are text and controls clear on a phone, and are forms and navigation straightforward to use?

The observations below come from editorial roundups and service pages. None provides comparable conversion-rate data or controlled tests, so treat the examples as inspiration rather than a ranking by performance.

Genre-forward fiction websites

For fiction authors, the visual identity can help a visitor recognize a genre before reading much copy. BookBub’s roundup of 20 sites built on its Author Websites platform shows several ways to do that with covers, color, logos, illustration, and header imagery. The examples below are drawn from that roundup.

1. Michelle Rowen: paranormal romance cues

Rowen’s site is presented as an example of visual design suited to paranormal romance. The adaptable idea is to make the mood and genre apparent through coordinated design rather than expecting a reader to infer the fit from an author name alone.

2. A. K. Steel: coordinated cover carousel

BookBub highlights Steel’s coordinated cover carousel. A repeated presentation can make a series or related titles feel like a connected collection and help visitors browse more than one book.

3. Hester Fox: a book-led historical fantasy page

Fox’s page is described as built around the book. That approach can suit an author whose immediate priority is introducing a featured title, provided the page also gives interested readers a clear route to more about the author or other work.

  • Comes with secure packaging
  • It can be a gift option

Across these examples, the design ingredients differ, but the goal is similar: use covers, palette, illustration, and branding to set expectations. BookBub also advises keeping sections focused so that books, biography, and email signup each have a clear role.

Book-first and single-title websites

A focused site can work well when one book or offer is the main reason a reader has arrived. The page should explain what the book offers and make the next step visible without burying it among unrelated content.

5. Christy Anne Jones: one clear book action

Site Builder Report describes Jones’s homepage as featuring a large book image, a short description, and one clear action. Its colors and fonts coordinate with the covers. This is a useful pattern for authors who want a visitor to understand the featured book quickly.

6. A nonfiction example: headline led by the reader’s outcome

Site Builder Report’s roundup includes a focused nonfiction site with a headline centered on the reader’s outcome and two different signup incentives. The approach connects the book’s promise to a reason to subscribe, while offering visitors a choice of entry points.

7. Julie Broad: order action in the top banner

Shopify describes Julie Broad’s site as placing its primary book-order action in the top banner, alongside an author portrait, a core value proposition, and media mentions. This makes the purchase route prominent while using the surrounding content to establish context.

These examples suggest a practical test: can a new visitor tell what the featured book is about and how to get it without navigating through several unrelated sections? The sources describe page design, not a causal increase in purchases or signups.

Backlist and multi-output author platforms

A site for a large catalog has a different job from a single-book landing page. It needs to make the latest title easy to find while also giving readers sensible ways to browse earlier books. A broader author or media platform must make similar choices across books, shows, newsletters, and other projects.

8. Malcolm Gladwell: latest book first, with a back catalog

Site Builder Report describes Gladwell’s site as featuring the latest title and a buy link, followed by a brief biography and back catalog. It also notes book and audiobook options, which accommodate different reading and listening preferences.

9. Tim Ferriss: a multi-output media brand

Ferriss’s site illustrates a broader platform spanning books, a podcast, video, a blog, a card game, and a newsletter. Site Builder Report points to the newsletter signup and free-chapter offer as lead-generation features, while noting that the number of outputs can make hierarchy difficult.

For a substantial backlist, a complete grid or simple book index can help visitors find titles beyond the latest release. For a multi-output platform, decide which offer leads; giving every project equal prominence can make the next step less obvious.

Build the structure around your work

The examples point to three useful site shapes. A debut or single-title author may need a focused homepage that explains one book and its next step. An author with a backlist needs a clear catalog and routes to individual titles. An author with a podcast, video, or other media needs to prioritize among several kinds of work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • One featured book: Lead with the cover, a concise description, and a clear action. Add biography and signup sections without distracting from the main offer.
  • Several books: Make the catalog easy to browse, identify the latest title, and provide purchase or reading routes for individual books.
  • Books plus other outputs: Choose a primary action and organize the remaining projects so visitors can find them without competing with that action.

Across all three, introduce the author and the kind of work they make, and avoid making readers scroll through several screens to find the books or purchase links. These priorities reflect the advice and critiques in Site Builder Report’s author website examples.

Make signup, contact, and mobile use straightforward

Newsletter signup is one possible next step, not a mandatory centerpiece for every author. BookBub advises making signup easy and obvious; the examples described by Site Builder Report include incentives such as a free chapter. A signup invitation should make its value clear and avoid unnecessary steps.

Keep contact information or a contact route easy to find when readers, event organizers, or media need to reach you. On a phone, check that covers and text are readable, controls are labeled, navigation is concise, and signup forms work as expected. BookBub specifically recommends checking the mobile presentation of covers, text, and forms; Site Builder Report notes usability problems such as unlabeled controls and signup routes that add needless clicks.

Questions authors ask when planning a website

Common planning questions include whether to pay for a dedicated author website rather than use a free DIY builder, how to turn social-media interest into a lasting reader relationship, how to start a romance newsletter, how to manage a large catalog of books or comics, and how to offer direct sales alongside retailer links. These are useful questions to answer before choosing a site structure; the fact that they appear in Tertulia’s author website case-study index does not establish a particular builder’s results.
