There is no single best WordPress website, but a short list of real sites shows how WordPress handles very different jobs. WPBeginner’s January 8, 2026 article, “21 Excellent WordPress Website Examples You Should Check Out (2026),” is the closest match to this topic. Its selection is editorial. The publisher chose sites for design and usability and does not publish a scoring method, so treat the list as a set of models to study rather than a ranking. The most useful way to use it is to pick the examples that serve the same visitor and task as your own site, then compare how they guide that visitor.
How to read a “best” list of WordPress sites
Three things shape every example below, and they matter more than any single design choice:
- Purpose comes first. A zoo, a news site, a portfolio and a restaurant ask visitors to do different things. A good example is good at one of those things.
- The sites are not one template. WPBeginner says the listed sites use custom WordPress themes and varied technologies. Copying the look of a site does not copy its setup.
- Setup paths differ. WordPress.com is a hosted service, while WordPress.org software is self-hosted on a server you arrange. Several examples here are self-hosted sites, and the look you admire may depend on custom code that a hosted plan does not allow.
When this article describes what an example “does,” it reports what the publisher’s article says and what you can see on the live page. Performance and mobile behavior were not measured for this article.
Business, services and public institutions
Awesome Motive: credibility through products and impact
WPBeginner groups this company site under business and enterprise, highlighting credibility, products and impact. For a software or agency company, study how the front page moves a visitor from “who are they” to “what did they build” without a long detour.
Houston Zoo: visitor logistics first
The list credits this site with visitor logistics and navigation. A zoo has many time-sensitive questions, so it is a useful model for any attraction, venue or event business. Check which items appear first on the live page and whether a visitor can find practical information without using search.
Grette: staff profiles as proof of expertise
Listed for professional services, staff profiles and expertise pages, this example shows how a service firm can make people the main trust signal. If you sell advice or expert work, a page structure built around named people and their specialties is worth copying.
Software and product sites
SeedProd: features explained, then a call to action
WPBeginner credits SeedProd with feature explanations and calls to action. The pattern to borrow is the order: explain what a feature does, then offer the next step, rather than leading with a button.
WPForms: use cases instead of feature lists
The list notes form templates and product use cases. Showing a visitor a task they recognize, such as a contact form or survey, often explains a product faster than a list of options.
Blogs and publishing
WPBeginner and Blog Tyrant: tutorials, glossaries and lead generation
WPBeginner’s own site is cited for tutorials and a glossary, which help beginners who arrive with unfamiliar terms. Blog Tyrant is cited for blogging guidance and lead generation. Both show that a blog can be a teaching resource and a list-building tool at once.
Rank #2
The New York Times: newspaper styling on WordPress
The list describes the Times example as using newspaper-inspired “NewsPrint” styling. It shows that a WordPress site can carry a strong editorial typographic identity. Serious publishers should weigh the reading experience, not just the look: check how article text, headings and images hold up on a small screen.
The Next Web: featured stories and clear sections
Featured stories and clearly labeled sections make it easy to choose between a top story and a topic you care about. For a news or magazine site, that clarity usually matters more than decoration.

Sony Music: artist imagery and branded color
The list credits Sony Music with artist imagery and branded color. Entertainment sites often let photography carry the identity, and color can tie pages to a catalog or label brand.
Angry Birds
WPBeginner lists Angry Birds in its music and entertainment group without a detailed note. Use the live site to see how a game franchise organizes content for different audiences.
99% Invisible: episodes with an integrated player
The list notes episodes and an integrated player. For a podcast, the player should sit where a listener expects to press play, next to the episode it belongs to.
The Beerists: descriptions and archives
Episode descriptions and archives let a listener decide what to play next. If you run a show with a back catalog, the archive is often the discovery tool that matters most.
Online stores
R.E.D.D Superfood Energy Bars: presenting the product
This food brand is listed for product presentation and shopping. For a small product catalog, the product page should answer the buying questions first: what it is, what it contains and how to add it to a cart.
Nalgene: WooCommerce browsing and featured products
The list cites WooCommerce product browsing and featured bottles. WooCommerce is WordPress’s ecommerce plugin, so this is an example of a store built on that extension. Featured products give a shopper a starting point when a catalog is large.
Agencies and portfolios
Nove: full-screen video and transparent navigation
WPBeginner credits Nove with full-screen video, transparent navigation and custom page templates. These choices create a strong first impression, but they depend on legible text over moving imagery. Test them with a phone and a slow connection before adopting the effect.
Unconquered: a video slider and an interactive identity
The list describes a video slider and an interactive identity. Motion can make a brand memorable, but a slider often hides content behind an automatic transition. Make sure key messages do not depend on the visitor waiting for a slide.

Sean O’Brien: credentials and partnerships
This personal brand site is listed for credentials and partnerships. For an independent professional, showing who you have worked with can be more persuasive than a long biography.
Melyssa Griffin: courses, coaching, case studies and lead capture
The list notes courses, coaching, case studies and lead capture. A personal brand that sells several services needs a clear route from each service to a contact or enrollment step.
Jia Tolentino: restrained writing portfolio
WordPress.com describes this writing portfolio as restrained, with a portrait, a short biography and selected clips prominent. Its lesson is subtraction: the writer’s work is the main content.
Restaurants and local visitor information
Pho Cafe: menu, reservations and delivery
The list credits Pho Cafe with a menu, reservations, delivery and key visitor information. A restaurant site succeeds when the menu, hours and booking route are visible without scrolling through promotional content.

Momofuku: image-led navigation and a separate store
The list describes image-led navigation and a separate ecommerce store. Keeping dining and retail apart can reduce confusion about what a visitor is buying and where.

More examples from WordPress.com
WordPress.com’s February 3, 2026 article, “15 Unique and Fun WordPress Websites to Inspire You in 2026,” adds cases that cover community, education and niche research. WordPress.com publishes this article about its own platform, so read its descriptions as a platform’s selection.
- PostSecret displays anonymous handwritten postcards with minimal text and a single column, which keeps attention on the cards. The article cites a figure of 881,000,000+ visitors from the site’s footer, which WordPress.com reports and does not audit. It also reports over $1 million raised for suicide prevention.
- Bedfordshire Bird Club is a membership and knowledge site with a prominent location search and birding-place information such as maps, coordinates, viewpoints and seasonal species.
- Engnovate is an IELTS learning resource built on the Astra theme, presented as a course and resource hub.
- The King’s Monologue is a creator and history resource whose visual identity supports its subject.
- ArtLesson is a teaching blog that uses doodle-led navigation and lesson categories.
- Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics is a research-center site that uses clear sections, bright visual cues and a clinical-trial map.
- Fit For Golf promotes a training app with workout demonstrations and testimonials.
- This Sweet Life is a family travel blog that pairs a strong hero image and personal storytelling with an email lead magnet.
The official WordPress.org Showcase
The WordPress.org Showcase is the official directory, with the tagline “The best websites, built with WordPress.” It groups sites into publication, creative, business and community categories. Examples include The Ankler, Daily Kos, Taylor Swift, Disney Connect, NASA, The Noguchi Museum, Rolling Stone and the White House.
The directory accepts submissions, so it is a curated showcase rather than a census. On October 7, 2026, the all-sites page listed 156 sites and the WordPress-filtered page listed 136. These counts change as sites are added and removed, so check the page before quoting them.

| Publish journalism or articles | The New York Times, The Next Web | Clear sections, featured stories and readable article typography |

How to audit an example before you copy it
Visual impressions from screenshots are not enough. Run this check on the live site and record the date, since sites change.
- Open the homepage in Chrome. Press Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows or Linux) or Cmd+Shift+M (Mac) to turn on the device toolbar, then choose a phone-width preset.
- Count the taps needed to reach the site’s main action: a booking, a purchase, a sign-up or an episode to play.
- Open the navigation menu. Confirm it opens, closes and does not cover the content underneath.
- Open an article or product page. Check text size and line length, and whether images are sized so text remains readable.
- Open the browser’s developer tools, choose the Lighthouse tab, and run a mobile report. Note the device setting and the date, because scores vary between runs.
- Walk through the conversion path to the final step without paying or submitting personal data, and note any point where the route becomes unclear.
What to copy and what to leave
- Copy the information order. Which question a site answers first is usually more transferable than its color palette.
- Copy the labels. Plain navigation labels such as “Menu,” “Shop” or “Episodes” are easier to reuse than clever ones.
- Be cautious with motion and imagery. Full-screen video, transparent menus and doodle navigation create identity, but they can reduce legibility and slow pages on a phone.
- Do not assume the stack. Confirm the theme, plugins and hosting with the site owner or through the documentation of the tools you plan to use before you copy a layout.
What the headline numbers do and do not show
WPBeginner’s article cites “over 810 million websites” and attributes 43.2% of the internet to WordPress.org. The article does not give a measurement date or method for either figure, so treat them as the publisher’s estimates rather than current, independently verified market data.
The examples themselves are a better guide to what WordPress can do than any headline count. A single well-chosen model that fits your visitor’s task will teach you more than the total number of sites on the platform.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes when using these examples
- Copying a homepage without checking the mobile menu or the checkout path.
- Choosing an example by industry alone. A zoo and a restaurant both need visitor information, but a portfolio and a store need different routes.
- Treating a showcase listing as proof of performance. Directory placement says a site was selected, not that it converts or loads quickly.
