The 2026 ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 G835 is a top-tier, large-format gaming laptop, led by a new 18-inch 4K 240Hz mini-LED display and high-end processor and graphics options. It is not an outright winner in every performance test: GamesRadar+ found it ahead of the MSI Raider A18 HX A9W in seven of 13 tested runs, while MSI won six, including two 4K benchmarks and 3DMark Steel Nomad. The SCAR’s strongest case is its combination of a distinctive screen and consistently high performance—not an uncontested category crown.
What is new in the 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18?
ASUS identifies the 2026 model family as the ROG Strix SCAR 18 G835. Its most conspicuous change is the 18-inch, 3840 × 2400 WQUXGA mini-LED screen. ASUS says the panel has a 16:10 aspect ratio and 100% DCI-P3 color coverage; its global launch announcement also specifies more than 2,000 local dimming zones and up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. ASUS’s product page lists the model and its display details.
At the top of the range, ASUS lists an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. It claims up to 320W sustained maximum total system power and up to 175W GPU TGP for the 2026 system. These are upper limits for top-end configurations, not specifications shared by every regional SKU. ASUS announced US availability through its own store and partner retailers on June 24, 2026. ASUS’s US announcement covers the launch and claimed power figures; its global ROG announcement describes the display.

Does the display really run at 240Hz?
Yes, but not in every GPU mode. ASUS says the display defaults to 120Hz in Standard, Eco, and Optimized GPU modes. The 240Hz setting is enabled in Armoury Crate when the GPU mode is set to Ultimate. That distinction matters: the screen’s advertised maximum refresh rate is a selectable operating mode, not the default in all settings. Check the active GPU mode and refresh-rate setting if the display is showing 120Hz.

ASUS calls it the “world’s first 18-inch 4K 240Hz mini-LED laptop panel with ROG Nebula ELMB.” That is ASUS’s launch claim, not the result of an independently verified survey of every laptop panel. The unusually high resolution and refresh rate make the screen the clearest differentiator of this generation.
Is 4K worth it on an 18-inch gaming laptop?
It depends on what you value and which games you play. At 3840 × 2400, the SCAR offers a much denser image than the common 2560 × 1600 resolution, along with the added contrast potential of mini-LED local dimming. That can suit visually rich single-player games, creative work, and users who want a detailed image across a large panel. The 16:10 format also provides more vertical space than a 16:9 screen.

Running games at the panel’s full resolution places a heavier load on the GPU than playing at 2560 × 1600. A high refresh-rate panel does not guarantee that demanding games will reach 240 frames per second at native resolution; frame rates depend on the game, graphics settings, and laptop configuration. Choosing a lower resolution can be a sensible trade if smoother performance matters more than maximum image detail. The available evidence does not establish a universal frame-rate advantage for either resolution across games.

The SCAR combines a high-resolution panel with selectable refresh behavior and ASUS’s GPU-mode controls. The key practical adjustment documented by ASUS is the refresh-rate change: 120Hz is the default in Standard, Eco, and Optimized modes, while 240Hz is available in Ultimate mode. ASUS also advertises ROG Nebula ELMB, a response-time feature, and mini-LED local dimming. The company’s figures—more than 2,000 dimming zones, up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness, and 100% DCI-P3—describe the panel on paper; they should not be mistaken for third-party measurements of a particular unit.

How does the SCAR 18 perform against the MSI Raider A18?
GamesRadar+ compared the SCAR with the MSI Raider A18 HX A9W and reported 13 test runs: seven favored the SCAR and six favored MSI. MSI led in two 4K benchmarks and 3DMark Steel Nomad. GamesRadar+ also placed the SCAR around the middle of its 18-inch group in one synthetic comparison, while reporting a substantial improvement over the prior SCAR release. These results support a strong performance assessment, but not a claim that the ASUS machine leads every rival or workload.
The results are specific to the tested machines and methodology. GamesRadar+ tested in Turbo mode, averaged repeated runs at 1080p, 1600p, and 2400p, and noted that outcomes varied by resolution and benchmark. A result from one game or synthetic test should not be treated as a prediction for every title or configuration. See GamesRadar+’s SCAR 18 review for the comparison and its test context.

How does it compare with the Razer Blade 18?
GamesRadar+ names the Razer Blade 18 as another relevant 18-inch alternative and describes it as more portable than the SCAR. That makes the trade-off straightforward: the SCAR’s appeal centers on its 4K 240Hz mini-LED screen and high-performance configuration, while portability may favor the Razer. The available comparison does not establish a complete, like-for-like price or performance ranking across every Blade configuration, so buyers should compare the specific screen, processor, GPU, and price of the SKUs they are considering.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat are the main compromises?
- Size and portability: This is an unusually large 18-inch gaming laptop. ASUS documents Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, and an 18-inch case or backpack may be useful, but fit should be checked against the exact bag dimensions rather than assumed.
- Noise in performance modes: The laptop’s high-power modes are aimed at performance, so noise under demanding workloads is a relevant trade-off. Choose a mode that fits the task and surroundings.
- Price: GamesRadar+ discussed its tested high-end configuration at around $5,000 during the review period. That is historical review-time context, not a current quote; prices and configurations can differ by retailer and region.
- Build observation: GamesRadar+ noted keyboard-deck flex in its review. This is a reviewer observation about the tested unit, not a documented defect affecting every device.
- Configuration differences: Processor, GPU, memory, storage, and display options can vary by market. Confirm the complete SKU rather than assuming every G835 carries the top-end specifications.
Which configuration should you check before buying?
Use the official G835 product family as a starting point, then confirm the exact regional listing. ASUS announced US availability on June 24, 2026, but availability and SKU combinations can differ elsewhere. A TechRadar page dated July 20, 2026 lists a 2560 × 1600 display and Core Ultra 9 275HX, which conflict with ASUS’s published 2026 specifications; the discrepancy’s cause is not established. Do not treat those details as universal 2026 specifications without verifying the precise model number. TechRadar’s review page contains the differing listing.
Before purchasing, check these details on the actual retailer page:
- The model is the 2026 G835 generation.
- The display resolution and refresh-rate capability match the configuration you want.
- The processor and graphics card are the intended parts; the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5090 Laptop GPU are top-end options, not guaranteed in every listing.
- Memory, storage, warranty, and regional keyboard layout meet your needs.
- The quoted price applies to that exact SKU and is current, rather than a past review-time figure.
Can the 2025 SCAR 18 display be installed in the 2026 model?
Compatibility is not established by the available product specifications or review. A reader’s question about fitting a 2025 display does not verify that the panels are interchangeable. Do not buy a replacement panel or attempt a swap on the assumption that it will fit; confirm compatibility with ASUS or a qualified repair provider using the exact model and part numbers.
